View Full Version : Simplist way to unlock with iNdependence and anySIM on MAC?

Hello everyone, is the method below the simplist way to unlock my brand new iPhone, fresh out of box, on a MAC.

1. Using iNdependence 1.2, activate the fresh brand new iPhone
2. Then under the Jailbreak tab, Jailbreak.
3. Under the Customize tab, copy the anySIM.app file into the Applications folder
4. Run anySIM.app on the iPhone
5. Under the Jailbreak tab, return to Jail
6. Reboot the iPhone

Anyone can verify this method? I don't want to brick my brand new iPhone

And am I missing any step? I don't want to install any unnecessary stuff like SSH, SFTP and SCP, if I'm not going to use them.

I really need a dumb-down 1 2 3 guide with the easiest, minimal steps to unlock the phone.

Looks like it should work. Unless you have unlocked your iphone before.

From iNdependence 1.2.1a's README file:

Please note that in order to install/remove applications, you'll need to have SSH installed on the phone as you'll be asked for the phone's IP address and root password.

So it does look like you need to enable SSH on the phone after activation if you want to be copy applications or other files.

I'm waiting for this "absolute minimum" method on Mac to be verified before I buy an iPhone; thanks for all the help.

It should Not brick your phone. At worst you will have to d a restore, thats it.

just tried the drag and dop method through independance and the ap appears on my springboard. yes you still need installer.app

when you drag and drop the file you will be asked for the phone ip adress (easy) and the password (dottie)

I now have the anysim app on my springboard

Does the method given in the first post enable us to use multiple SIM cards without having to reactivate?

Let's say I activated using iNdependence and unlocked the phone with AnySim. I used my own T-Mobile SIM card during this process. After I unlock, I replace my SIM card with my wife's SIM card (or any other SIM card, for that matter). Would I need to reactivate or reunlock the phone?

Some posts point to a patched "lockdownd" program that replaces the original one to handle this case. So, my final questions are:

- Is replacing the original lockdownd with the patched version required to prevent reactivation or reunlock after changing SIM's?
- If it is, does iNdependence already do it for us when we activate or jailbreak the phone?

Nifty,

Why do you need Installer.app (I suppose this is the iPhone package installer from http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/ that enables installing PXL packaged apps on the phone) if you can install AnySim using iNdependence? Is it so that we can install BSD subsystem or other packages that AnySim depends on?

I understand it's useful to have access to third-party apps on the phone using a native package installer, but if AnySim can run on a fresh jailbreaked and SSH-enabled phone with no extra dependencies, that's enough for the absolute minimum method. My impression from the dev team's messages is that AnySim does not have any external dependencies and can be run on a freshly jailbreaked/SSH-enabled phone after you copy it over. Can anyone confirm this?

you ned installer.app with ssh and the bsd sub system installed so that you can drag and drop the easy way.

By dragging and dropping with iNdepependance you just doing a mini SSH session to get the file there.

I thnk you should have installer.app there anyway. its a great resource

I'm under the impression that Installer.app is recommended since it's the quickest way to get BSD Tools and OpenSSH onto the phone, which are required by Independence to transfer anySIM.app over.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a mini SSH session to get the file into the iPhone is exactly enough for most of us?

The Dev team just told us to copy the file into the iPhone (virgin, untapped by any unlock attempt), they didn't tell us to get the SSH, BSD and all the other stuff that only hackers, geeks would need to use.

99% of the iPhone users (who want an unlock) just want a simple method, without all the other bloat softwares, which we'll never use.

John,

Agreed. It looks like iNdependence installs the minimum required software on the phone for file transfers to work Dropbear SSH and friends from the docs). The only reason to need the BSD subsystem would be if AnySim depended on it. Can anyone confirm this one way or another?

Thanks,

Thanks,

We need the simpliest 123 steps guide for the unlocking of a virgin iPhone on a MAC. Hopefully it shouldn't need all the SSH, BSD, SCP and bloat software to be installed.

Pretty much most of us just want to simply unlock the iPhone once and get it working. After that, just use the iPhone like normal.

For the most part, most of us - we'll never use the other software like SSH and et cetera.

ok, here you go.
I'am on a Mac aswell and it's really easy. Sorry for my english.

Asume you have an out-of-the-box iPhone, did not fiddle around before.
Your Mac is running iTunes 7.4.1. You might not know, which version of the firmware your iPhone is runnig. The iPhone comes with a preloaded AT&T simcard. Leave it where it is (in the tray). You downloaded anySIM.app already to your Mac.
--EDIT--
You do not need any Lockdown file or other stuff not mentioned in the guide.
And YES, thanks to iNdependence youtube will work after the activation and later on.
You do not need App Tapp Installer. You might WANT to use it after unlocking cause you wanna have all the cool apps on the phone. First do the unlock then enjoy, then install additional apps
--END EDIT--

Step 1:
Make sure your iPhone runs firmware 1.0.2. You dont know on a virgin phone, cause it does not show.

1. Get iPhone firmware 1.0.2 from Apple at http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3823.20070821.vormd/iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw. It's a zip archive, leave it that way.
2. Start iTunes 4.7.1.
3. Hold home- and on/off-button on the iphone.
4. Connect mac and iphone and keep holding the buttons on the iphone.
5. The iphone boots in restore-mode, iTunes opens up the restore dialog. Release the two buttos on the iphone.
6. Hold option-key on the Mac and then press "Restore" in iTunes. Dialog popps up asking for the firmware to use then. Point to the zip arcives you downloaded.
7. iTunes will restore your iPhone to 1.0.2 firmware, take couple minutes.

Step 2:
Put everything in place

1. Unzip the fiirmware file (the one you downloaded earlier) and put the content in an new folder. Name the folder however you like.
2. Get iNdependence 1.2.1a here: http://code.google.com/p/independence/
3. Connect Mac and iPhone and quit iTunes if running
4. Quit iTunes Helper. For doing so open "Activity Monitor" in Applications -> Utilities on the Mac. Find iTunes Helper, click it and hit the red Button "Quit Process" on the top left. In the dialog hit "Force Quit". After that quit Activity monitor.
5. Start iNdependence on the Mac.
5b. iNdependence sometimes throws an error when you do one of the actions below. In that case just quit iNdependence, and restart it. Then dor the step that threw the error (and just that step) again. It's a known error
6. Under "Activation" hit the button "Activate phone". Independence wants to know, where the firmware is. Point to the folder (1.) not the zip file.
7. Activation is done automaticly in 1-3 minutes.
8. In iNdependence switch to "Jailbreak"
9. Hit "Perform Jailbreak". iNdependence again wants to know the location of the folder (1)
10. After Jailbreak switch to "SSH" (installing SSH requires a jailbroken iPhone)
11. Hit "Install SSH/SFTP/SCP". Upon installing you have to shut down and restart the iPhone twice. iNdependence will inform you onscreen - easy. You have to install SSH/SFTP/SCP cause iNdependence will use the installed SSH-server later on at installation of anySIM.app
12. Hit "Change Password". Dialog shows up. In "account name" type "root" (without quotes) and select a password of your choice. Hit "OK".
13. Hit "Change Password". Dialog shows up. In "account name" type "mobile" (without quotes) and select a password of your choice. Hit "OK".
--> explanation: iPhone has the two users root and mobile. Changing their password makes sense, cause you dont want anyone in reach of you wlan access your phone ;-)
--EDIT--
13b. You may take the AT&T simcard that came with the phone now out of your iPhone
14. In iNdependence switch to "Customize" and select "Application". Hit the "Add" Button and select anySIM (the solution from the dev team) that should be sitting on your desktop. Follow the process, the software gets installed.
15. OK, one more: After hitting "Applications" (14) you have to hit "User" for user installed applications. Then hit "Add". iNdependence wants to know the IP-Number of your iPhone. You should have set this already to use the iPhone. Find IP at "Settings"->"Wi-Fi" on the phone. You need the root password you have set previously in 12. iNdependence sets the correct permissions after transferring the app (anySIM).
--END EDIT--

Step 3:
On your phone goto settings genral, autolock never.
On the iPhone goto "Settings"->"General"->"Autolock" and select "Never"
On the springboard hit anySIM.
--EDIT--
Wait for the app anySIM to finish the unlock process. Restart the iPhone. After restart put in you private (own) simcard and do just the activation with iNdependence once more again - then enjoy the free iPhone.
--END EDIT--
You may leave the iPhone jailbroken, no known harm.

And one note from a Mac user: we are not that unable to do some tasks. Was even more tricky for me to write that up in english (i'm german) than doing the process. It works

enjoy,

There is just one problem, with the .pxl method it seems you don't have to worry about permissions ie. setting permissions to 755. With iNdependence I think the app needs to have the correct permissions, if anyone knows how to easily change the anysim apps permissions to 755 on the mac I would appreciate being taught. As soon as I know how to do this I am going to try to do this method with my iphone. Thanks in advance.

You dont have to use the app tapp installer at all. but you can - afterwards. It took me playing an hour with my unlocked phone, then I downloaded AppTapp Installer to my Mac. If you want to use App Tapp Installer to load more software on your iPhone, you can do that afterwards at any time.
Download version 3.1 to you Mac. Unzip it and double-click the software on your Mac (the iPhone is connected to the Mac, iTunes and iTunes Helper shut down). App Tapp installer installs itsself on the phone - no ssh, no sftp for you to do. After a minute or so, you'll find a new Software named "Installer" on your iPhone - thats it. Start it, hit Community Sources and get all the Apps you want.

"THE " unlock for Mac OSX users for users not familiar with command line stuff (for PC/Windows users : admit, confess and go buy a Macintosh, like I did 3 months ago ...you will be forgiven for the years of mistakes in your life ...) :

I.. (new) iPhone - LEAVE YOUR AT&T SIM IN YOUR iPHONE FOR NOW:
create on Mac in "HOME" directory phonedmg, example Steve
ex. : HD/Users/Steve/phonedmg
download following files to /phonedmg :
Ia./ iNdependence 1.2.1 http://code.google.com/p/independence/ + install
Ib./ AppTapp http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/ + install
Ic./ FUGU (GUI SSH-er) http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15693 + install
Id./ http://www.rogueamoeba.com/utm/posts/Article/MakeiPhoneRingtone-2007-09-13-15-00 + install
Ie./ anySIM http://www.deadbeef.cn/files/anySIM.zip + save
If./ keyboard.plist http://www.hacktheiphone.net/downloads/Keyboard_plist.zip +save
II. do following on your Mac :
CLOSE iTunes !!!!
IIa./ independence 1.2.1 - ACTIVATION (the YouTube is fixed !)
if your iPhone software is NOT iPone 1.02 ( 1.00 of 1.01) , you must run ACTIVATION a first time, then start iTunes, RESTORE which will also update to 1.02 : close iTunes !!!
IIb./ independence 1.2.1 : ACTIVATION + JAILBREAK
in tab SSH : change passwords :
root (supply new password, ex. 12345)
mobile (supply new pasword, ex. 12345)
IIc./ RESTART iPhone (keep iTunes closed)
IId./ Setting iPhone:
check your iPhone's IP adress ( ex. 10.0.0.100)
on iPhone : SETTINGS GENERAL : AUTO-LOCK on NEVER
IIe./ AppTapp (keep iTunes closed) : YOU CAN REMOVE YOUR AT&T SIM HERE no SIM in iPhone for now)
choose correct software iPhone 1.02 !!
on iPhone : install following IN THIS ORDER :
Community Sources
BSD Subsystemn
OpenSSH
IIf./ restart iPhone
IIg./ on Mac : run FUGU (keep iTunes closed)
in right part = iPhone , fill in :
your IP adres iPhone (ex. 10.0.0.100)
Username : root
port : 22
the first connection may take 30-60 seconds, a new RSA key is generated, click OK if the key is presented to you
if you did an SSH before with something else, an error might be given ; change your IP address to something else :
op iPhone WIFI , your base-station right blue error, choose STATIC in stead of DHCP, change your IP number (bv 10.0.0.199)
open FUGU and choose IP adres 10.0.0.199 , rest is teh same ; a new key will be generated + presented
give your password for "root" as defined earlier (above) : 12345
IIh./ copy anySIM.app using FUGU on iPhone in /Applications (drag and drop)
IIi./ restart iPhone
IIj./ click icon anySIM on iPhone touch-screen and, it runs ... wait till the ultimate end !
IIk./ after anySIM : iPhone restarten, put your local SIM into iPhone, iPhone unlocked !
III. Other interesting changes to iPhone :
III.a./ stop AUTOCORRECTION keyboard (annoying if you don't type in English) :
in FUGU :
1. left (Mac) window : go to folder /phonedmg where you saved before keyboard.plist
2. right part = iPhone : click Applications and in Applications click Preferences
3. drag keyboard.plist to right part Applications/Preferences
4. now on iPhone : under SETTINGS and KEYBOARD you can switch off auto-correction
III.b/ VoiceMail button in Phone :
SWITCH OFF YOUR SIM PIN code !!!!! (SEttings/Phone/SIM PIN : OFF !!!!!!!!!!!!)
1. in contacts, create an "account" with name VoiceMail and give it your VoiceMail number (ex. +32475151230 = Proximus in Belgium)
2. in OSX : in Applications, start program/application "Terminal"
3. in Terminal , typ :
ssh root@10.0.0.199 + give password
cd /usr/bin
launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist (=stop commcenter)
minicom
in minicom, type following:
AT+CSVM=1,"+32475151230" + ENTER
if this generates ERROR, try again, it will pass
CTRL-A en Q
launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist (=start again commcenter)
exit
exit
4. restart iPhone
5. if you want, you can now put back/activate your SIM PIN pascode : on iPhone Settings/Phone/SIM PIN
IV. you now can remove installer (AppTapp) and anySIM icon from your iPhone's home-screen :
in FUGU go to right part = iPhone:
go to Applications, go to Installer, select all files and click trash icon = delete
move on lever up to Applications and go there to anySIM, select all files and delete
move one level up
delete (emptied) folder Installer
delete (emptied) folder anySIM; these 2 last steps will remove the icons from your iPhones home screen
V. on iPhone in SETTINGS GENERAL : put AutoLock back on f.i. 2 minutes
VI. open iTunes : synchronize contacts, calendar, music, movies, podcast ...
VII. put own ringtones op iPhone : use MakeiPhoneRingtone

I now am the proud owner of a brand-new iPhone running unlocked on T-Mobile's network in Boston, MA! Everything works, including EDGE (I'm on the 19.99 total internet plan that includes unlimited data over EDGE with VPN plus WIFI access over T-Mobile Hotspot). The instructions at http://www.hacktheiphone.com/74/iphone_how_to_software_unlock_mac_74_1.html did the job for me. There are pitfalls; you have to take particular care to replace the SIM card according to the instructions, and shut down iNdependence each time after you are done. lockdownd and BSD subsystem are required if you want to use multiple SIM cards; both my and my wife's T-Mobile SIM's now work with the phone. You can remove OpenSSH after the deed if you don't want to mess around the phone's file system remotely from your Mac/PC.

Thanks for all the help; this was fun!

I have not tried em, cause it worked on my second iPhone, but users here say it works. On first posts you'll find the download adresses for the files you will need.

good luck

I got an error message from anySim(Unlock Failure - The flash operation succeded but the unlock command failed. You might want to check the basband manually using minicom) but I ignored it and it works!

Now, I did not put the iphone back into jail mode, got excited, switched it off and now it does not work anymore. anySim tells me (Unlock Failure - couldn't locate bytes to patch)?

Do I have to put the iphone back to factory settings, or is there a smarter way to get it going (after it worked beforehand).
... stupid me ...

you should have only ever used anysim once the unlock stays untill you update firmware. you need to put it back to the locked firmware and start again. You want to flash the .fls and .eep look for a guide

I am trying to reset my iphone, but iTunes ignores it due to wrong IMEI... Can I hit the "Erase all content and settings" button to kill it, hoping that iTunes can then upload the old firmware.
At the moment I can ssh into the phone...

Hi Volkspost,

I am trying to move files using Fugu, but when I try to copy the files it says "Couldn't get handle: Failure". I still can ssh... Do you have an idea?

is the phone jailbroken? even if its not, you may use to login via ssh, you can pull files from the phone but not put them.
have never seen that error msg, i never used Fugu, work with transmit, but this should not matter.

.I have played with the system a bit and found out that I do not have the permisson to place files. I can copy the files you have mentioned into other directories... So the message "Couldn't get handle" is propably due to access rights. CHMOD +x /usr/bin works, but does not change the situation and I am logged in as root.
How can you pull files onto the iPhone under ssh?

again: is the phone jailbroken? if not, this would explain the problem. you can log into but not put anything. check with iNdependence (Mac) or PC if the phone s jailbroken.

Currently, the iphone is not jailbroken. I have tried to break it again using independence, but it failed.

Currently, the iphone is not jailbroken. I have tried to break it again using independence, but it failed.

thats the reason why you cant put files. jailbroken means read-write to the filesystem in jail its just read-only.

why did you fail to jailbreak? independence sometimes throws an error when you wanna jailbreak, something like error -343526 or so. if that happens, just quit independence, start it again and do jailbreak. always worked for me then.

Ok, I have done the following
step 1) bbupdater -f ICE03.14.08_G.fls then bbupdater -e ICE03.14.08_G.eep
I didnt do bbupdater -v, instead:
step 2) I did anySim again... and it worked (with a T-Mobile Germany SIM)
then I followed the procedure as outlined in the beginning of the tread and as soon as I put the phone back into jail mode and restarted it, I could only enter the PIN, but moaned about an incorrect SIM...

any idea?

Hi, I have managed to unloock my phone !!!

A friend got himself a brandnew iPhone from the US and I thought I can hack it with "my experience" now. But, I just can't jailbreak the thing. iNdepenence tells me "Error.. restore mode". Is it possible that this new iPhone has firmware 1.1.1 preinstalled?

if so, you won't be able to jailbreak the old way. the dev team already has a way but it's for terminal lovers for now. just wait a few days for an easier solution
