HOWTO: UNLOCK YOUR IPHONE from scratch and get youtube [NOOBIE EDITION]

Tools Needed:
wInstaller
iBrickr
PACAY by brasuco (newer)
unlock.pxl (included one is modified with the faster iUnlock)

ALL TOOLS AVAILABLE HERE: http://www.s_endspace.com/file/7phdz9

iTunes version 7.4.X (yes, including 7.4.2)
Download the 1.0.2 Firmware Restore Image (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3823.20070821.vormd/iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw)


1. Plug iPhone into iTunes (Keep original ATT sim in the iPhone) - Wait Till iTunes Recognizes it.

2. Hold On and Home Buttons Together for 20 seconds until the Yellow ! Triangles Appears

3. iTunes will say it found an iPhone that needs to be restored, click ok and then HOLD SHIFT then click restore. iTunes will then ask you what firmware to restore, find the restore image you just downloaded (the 93 meg thing) and update your iPhone. Wait till its finished.

4. Run wInstallerGUI.exe and click Jailbreak (it will jailbreak your phone) - close wInstaller

5. Run PACAY's (CLICK HERE) activate.bat

6. Run ibrickr.exe and choose Applications (it may have you set it up the PXL).

7. In ibrickr -> Applications -> Install from PXL

8. Choose Unlock-fast.pxl

9. Let it do its thing. Your iphone lock itself when its done.

10. On the iPhone: Settings -> GENERAL -> Auto-Lock -> NEVER

11. Turn off iPhone Completely (hold on/off then slide the bar) - Turn it on again

12. Run the Unlock App.

13. Click Start

14. Let it RUN!!! It will tell you when it is "Complete"

15. When its done, Exit the program to the Springboard

16. Eject your simCard slot and do a Full turn off (hold on/off then slide the bar).

17. Put in your new simCard and turn the iPhone ON!

18. Run PACAY's activate.bat AGAIN (fix youtube again)

19. Run iBrickr again Applications-> on the RIght hand side on the iPhone thingie, click the minus next to unlock to uninstall it.

20. SETTINGS -> GENERAL -> NETWORK -> EDGE (ENTER YOUR EDGE SETTINGS)

but unfortunately i have tried about 4/5 methods so far but havent been successful,
i just tried this method ,cause in this one there's no typing required and looks easy,but just after doing it ,it seems that the iphone is no recognizing any sim that i'm putting in it!
it says searching and thats it doesnt connect to any network,any heads up that i can do

Howto worked great. Tmobile prepaid with sms in/out and youtube.

You can reduce steps 4 & 5 to simply using activate in winstaller instead of going through PACAY.

..the new unlock.pxl is definitely faster, approx 6-7 minutes ....i don't mind going the long route as long as it's unlocked though

I have unlocked 10 phones using a version of this method. using itunes 7.4

and i have encountered problems, but have overcome them and i can help you too..start off by upgrading itunes.

2. Iphone in triangle mode (hold on/off and home buttion)

3. Start itunes 7.4 plug in iphone and restore 1.02 and shutdown itunes

4. Restart phone (hold on button till red slide appears turn off and then turn back on)

5. ibrickr v0.8 jailbreak phone. Follow instruction on all the restarts

6. Restart phone (hold on button till red slide appears turn off and then turn back on)

Good to Go everything works i tested it with tmobile & at&t sim no problem.

The only thing i do is power the phone off and then swap out sim chip and then power it back on....When going back to at&t the visual voice mail takes a min to work again and asks for your voice mail password

Yes you are right sync your iphone First to save everything otherwise you will loose your info with the restore....You must also remove the check mark for auto sync in itunes otherwise it will keep nagging you during the process..

The iphone does not tell you anything at the end it just works by testing with sim. When you do hit the unlock on the springboard when it completes it tells you it is done.

this common steps :
1 Restore to factory default first
2. Do jail break + pacay
3. restart your phone
3. check at this point, Do you see that your I phone had been activated you without any error msg
4. If ok, continue next step, install PXL file

that is the correct version...most everyone on here refers to 7.4.1.2 as 7.4

ahhh okay i went thru the forum again and found someone with the exact same thing as me! it was done so i turned off, switch sim cards, turned back on and everything is working perfect!
calls in/calls out -- GOOD
sms in/sms out -- GOOD

oh and also youtube worked without me having to run the batch file again...so i wont run it again...its all working!

i've sucess w/itunes 7.3.x and not 7.4.x. U need to place a copy of mobiledevice.dll in the folders of winstaller and it should be able to communicate w/iPhone. Please read the readme in winstaller for details.

I run part of the tutorial (already have ATT so I just want to activate the phone and youtube). I run wInstaller and jailbreak, activate and it works. I run PACAY activate bat file and everything said ok. But youtube still doesnt work. Any ideas?

Wooo hooo... phone activated and unlocked..
Followed the 20 steps verbatim and phone is usable now -
1) youtube - working
2) Wifi - working
3) Phone - working (in and out)
4) bluetooth - working
and so on....

It took me about an hour to complete the process (very nervous about the whole process, but worked out GREAT!!)

For starters here are few tips (that are not mentioned in the 20 steps):
1) Basic basics - open the box and plug iphone to base and connect the base to computer.
2) First iTunes - As soon as iTunes (my ver 7.4.1.2) kicks off, recognizes the iphone DO NOT click on the buttons to activate the phone
3) Power button - It is on the head of the iphone besides the simcard compartment (a black line like thing)
4) Restore mode - to go into restore mode press AND hold Power + Home button for 20 seconds during which time you will see a) grey apple b) black screen c) gray apple and finally an YELLOW triangle with exclamation mark.
5) Procedure - Follow the procedure EACH AND EVERY step.

It worked for me. Hope you will find your iPhone activated and unlocked soon.

you are NOT able to read the SIM memory on iPhone...

just copy your SIM contacts to Outlook then sync to iPhone

Everything is working great, directions worked like magic, it took a minute for the t-mobile icon to appear and I was refreshing the first post of this thread to go back and do it over again, while I refreshed I took a glance at the phone and the t-mobile icon was sitting there patiently waiting for me to ackknowledge it!!

Is the voice mail button with this release suppose to call the number? How do I get that to work. I found mac ssh directions but is there an app for a pc? Thank in advance for your help!

I think this is the easiest method that I have done and worked flawlessly in unlocking new out of the box iphones. I have done 5 using this method. I haven't tested bluetooth and edge, but everything else works(wifi, youtube, maps, safari, sms send/receive and of course phone using t-mobile US sim and roaming sim from phil globe telecom. I only ran pacay once(skipped #18) and you tube works without problems.

I will not be using any other method but this one for now.

I'm not sure what exactly this question is. I was talking about unlocking my iphone, and then using the sim card from inside the Nokia 6030 to use on the iphone. If your question is where exactly the sim card from the Nokia is, it's beneath the battery.

Just slide off the back cover and lift the little metal piece near the bottom of the battery... lift just a little to loosen the battery, then lift the battery off away from that metal piece. That metal is not connected to the battery, and is actually used to cover the sim card. Then use that sim on the iphone.

Thanks for the thread. I unlocked my phone the hard way the 1st night that it became possible but never got youtube to work. Today I went ahead and restored my phone to factory settings and re-unlocked it. Ever thing works great now, including youtube. Thanks!

You should be able to run PACAY activate.bat again to get youtube working.

you made a big mistake i think.. my iphone is activated with att plan and i use this method but not the PACAY activation. you dont need to use PACAY because your phone is already activated. i think that's why your youtube is not working. try to restore on the original pc that you activated your iphone. hope this helps.

Even thou, I'm with ATT and plan to be in a future I still need to unlock my Iphone becuz I'm going oversea and I'd love to use my Iphone overthere with prepaid sims card. I believe youtube didn't work ever since I got Iphone and activated. I also disconnect EDGE and only on Wi-Fi. Anyone can help with youtube? If I restore back I will loose unlocked phone and will not be able to use in Thailand where I suppose to be next week.

It's nothing to do with iTunes. Just try a different wInstaller download. That should fix it.

You could re-do the whole thing slowly, one step at a time. Try printing out the instructions, get all the files and apps ready on your desktop. I've successfully unlocked 2 iPhones using this method.

I did it with itunes 7.4.x from the beginning.

You can turn auto lock back on after the unlock.

Anyone knows why SIM contacts are not visible from Iphone? I have tried 2 SIM cards from Tmobile, everything works but in contacts looks like nothing is there.

For any other regular unlocked phone, SIM contacts should show up fine.

iPhone doesn't take its contacts from the SIM card, it sync's with Outlook or other simular programs

Can I use this to just activate the iphone, and then continue later? I don't have the sim card I want to use here, so I was thinking of buying the phone, activate it, then unlock it in about a week, would that work, or do you have to do everything at the same time for some reason?

And got my t-mobile gprs working which isnt running bad at all.

However,

I have tryed the click here activate twice now, but still no luck.

My date and time is correct, i check that.

And also strangely in world clock, if i put in london if says it tommorow and the wrong time.

Any help would be appeciated

So I unlocked my ATT activated iphone sucessfully but "youtube" doesnt' work. Some say I made a big mistake becuz this iphone is legally activated with ATT and I'm still using ATT sim. Come to think of it while in process of unlocking I didn't kill Itune and that might cause the problem (I've read some with the same problem and they also have Itune running while unlocking the phone)

I want to try to run activate.bat again but at what step should I start? Do I need to do all steps all over or I don't have to jailbroken my phone, do I need to add unlockfile to my phone? Or I should just connect my phone and run activate.bat without Itune running?

I did add Thai language by clicking "thai-front.bat" without jailbroken my phone and it works flawlessly.

This may be a stupid question.

Does unlocking your phone this way mean that when the dev team fixes the new update, its will be able to be fixed no matter how you unlocked your iphone.

This way worked fine for me, but i dont really understand who the dev team are, do they create the iunlock (fast - us used in this unlock process).

Could someone please enlighten me

the lock will lock all unlocked phone reguardless of what method you used. anysim is from the dev team
fast-unlock is from harro .
anysim is a bit buggy fast-unlock has shown the best results

After the iphone had been unlocked. There is this an icon "ANYSIMM" or a simillar icon with a (lock), unlocked appear on the desktop of the iPhone. This icon, once accessed, the network frequency falls to ZERO. That means, the phone looses network and is now non-workable.

If this icon is disturbed and the network is gone, then, we need to reboot to factory default settings. And then, the whole procedure of unlocking from point 0, has to be repeated again to re-gain the iPhones unlocked status.

Pls advise, as to how to hide or remove this ANYSIM icon from desktop for future safety. :confused:

I am having this issue as well. I was originally able to surfer on youtube, when I had no sim in the slot. I chose to reactivate for an att wireless sim(before cingular merger) so I could put voice on on the phone. And interesntly enough my history (of you tube videos works) but both search and featured/ and top always give me you have no edge connection blah blah blah. Also I know I don't have edge connection enabled on the sim, but doesn't the iphone auto switch to wifi(which I am on..g open and unsecure for now). Any help is appreciated. I originally used anysim but for I kept getting byte errors so I restore and using unlock.app and applied the 20 minute firmware flash and that eventually worked. Everything is working for now..

Except that my voice mail doesn't show up persisentiently only immediately after calling voice mail(if I have extra message or I get a voice mail while the phone is on). If I power it off with say 3 voice mails still unchecked and turn it back on, I recieve no indication that I still have unheard voice mail. Not a huge issuel, but annoying. I care more about the youtube issue. Any ideas? I have run PACAY multipile times and seen the iphone softreset and then powered it off completley and turned it back on.

Itunes will delete pacay and restore the phone but it will not get rid of the unlock unless you update the iphone firmware
