if you are wanting to avoid having to change your source every time you enter apple TV but dont want your boot partition to have a HUGE media file, follow these instructions
Back Up your media file (JUST IN CASE!)
Copy the media file to the hard drive you would like it to be stored on (for me this is my 320 external :) )
create and alias and place this in on your boot drive, then all you need to do is remove the origional from your boot drive and apple tv will sync to your chosen hard drive, leaving you boot hard drive free.
P.S - i dont know how many of you will be helped by this, i only did it for 2 reasons. the first is the lack of streaming photo's. i have about 500 photo's in 1300*768 and you like to show them off! the second is that i hate having to change the directry every time i open the APP. i have tested this and it works.
keep up the good work here guys
