Now that full OS-X is working thanks to semthex, I would like to see a plug in to integrate Elgato's EyeTV and get dvr functions to the aTV, if anyone else is interested we could start a bounty to get more developers in.
I would like to hear people's oppininions as to what would be better, either record to a USB dirve, NAS, or else??
The whole point would be to automate the import into aTV of the recorded files (and a way to delete them).

That would make the appleTV the ultimate platform to have.
Has anyone actually attempted to install elgato's eyeTV software onto their Mac OS X (full) install? And if so have people been using the USB version of the adapter to view television?
If you could install the EyeTV software and EyeControl 1.4 or later you can have full control over the EyeTV DVR functions remotely (internet or network). [Note that EyeControl 1.4 is Mac ONLY (edit)]

Elgato's EyeTV and USB Hybrid tuner is my main focus right now. Currently, eyetv loads up but doesn't seem to find it's usb tuner. I'm hoping this apple tv is potent enough to do full res encoding as a pvr.
would love to get some help getting this working. i know there's lots of curious people around this one.

I dont have much of experience in macs (I'm a switcher) but anything I can do I'll be glad. However I think this new product from ElGato will be the best partner for the aTV http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/02/elgatos-turbo-264-usb-stick-painlessly-coverts-vidz-to-h-264/

Hi all,
In my opinion, the best way to integrate eyeTV with appleTV, would not be to try to use the software and usb key onto the appleTV, since it'll allways be some hacked-together bundle, that will ALWAYS have something not working ;)
the best way would be to integrate gracefully the eyeTV software, and even hardware used on a regular mac, and stream data to a custom plugin onto the appleTV.
I'm thinking FRAppliance + eyeTV SDK (gives you raw mpeg data access)
the link is here:
http://elgato.com/index.php?file=support_updates_eyetvsdk
This seems cleaner and more integrated to me, because you'll always want the less options possible on your appleTV, and the most comfort possible at your desk.
Using elgato hardware on an appletv would force you bigger (external) drives, battling with USB access, what if you want more control or to edit and cut files ....
This would be an endless feature race... for things that already are present inside eyeTV software.
like any PVR, i want it integrated with my sit-down-after-work-with-a-glass-of-wine. i have a laptop as my main computer, which isn't good for PVR.
mass storage for aTV won't be a problem and i personally hack embedded systems to create better and more useful technology in my life. this includes stability, albeit, almost always involved a choatic, "unstable" phase. : )
EyeTV _will_ run on this baby.

I ordered this with my AppleTV and a USB HUB to try and make it work.
I noticed that on an EyeTV screen there was a link to FrontRow. Not sure if this is correct as I have looked at alot of stuff about ATV and EyeTV.
But if EyeTV software has a link to open FrontRow, then couldn't you just rename BackRow so EyeTV was thinking BackRow was FrontRow?
I would just run OSX on an External USB drive and have all the software running on that and not even use the ATV software/OSX
FrontRow works great. I run it on my PPC G5 with the hack to turn off IRemote.
Well, untill I get the stuff, I will be looking around some more but I think it is all doable.
We shall see..
good luck

fyi, elgato removed the 'Front Row' menu option after v2.3.0 (iirc) because of pressure from apple. the version with the option still there is still available afaik.
i think that would be a workable and nice-enough solution - AppleTV menu option which launches the EyeTV full screen menu - menu option from there back to AppleTV.

Wow!!! That was fast. I ordered the stuff yesterday and here it is today...
Got the ATV and EyeTV and a 4-HUB USB...
So the fun starts to get OSX running on it and then EyeTV...

Hello,
I am a newbie on AppleTV. I have EyeTV 2.5 running on my Mac mini, and are fairly happy. I can use my iphone to watch recordings over wifi.
I want to invest on an AppleTV. There are some questions:
1. Is there a plugin for AppleTV to fully control EyeTV software ? This includes watch recorded programs, browse program info and schedule recording, and watch live TV ?
Also, is there some software outthere that runs a webserver, where I can control my EyeTV from the internet using a browser ?
Thanks.

Elgato's EyeTV and USB Hybrid tuner is my main focus right now. Currently, eyetv loads up but doesn't seem to find it's usb tuner. I'm hoping this apple tv is potent enough to do full res encoding as a pvr.
For what it's worth, my interest is solely to get the eyeTV running on the AppleTV as a tuner. PVR would be nice, but totally not required. Let me explain why... here's my AV setup:
Sony 32" Trinitron (not the last-generation silver, the one gen before that)
Pioneer AV receiver with SVideo switching
Some no-name DVD player
Some no-name VCR
All of these are connected into the AV receiver, which handles all sound (the tv's sound isn't even connected), switching, power control, etc. The VCR is unusable for tapes, it's only duty is to act as a cable tuner, because that way the signal gets fed through the AV receiver and I don't have to navigate the TV's menus -- which like all Sony systems are completely unusable.
So now that the video market has stabilized I'm going to upgrade the entire suite. I am thinking of something like this:
Panasonic 42" plasma, no tuner at all!
Keep my Pioneer receiver
AppleTV with HDMI
Cheap-o progressive-scan DVD with HDMI
In this setup the video signals will bypass the tuner, their video output will go to the TV which has auto selection (phew) and all their audio goes to the receiver. The only problem with this concept is that the TV doesn't have a tuner. So I need some way to get a bog-standard TV signal into the TV. Something with QAM tuning would be great, like the Hybrid.
So all I need is a way to stream the video from eyeTV. I don't need recording, channel listings, or anything like that! Just a menu item in the AppleTV to select and tune the eyeTV and I would be in heaven!

I know this is probably the wrong place to ask, since I don't own an Apple TV and have no plans on buying one.
I have an old powerbook loaded with Leopard, and EyeTV (which is why I don't have any interest in Apple TV), but I would love to have EyeTV integrated inside Frontrow.
If someone can pull it off (and apparantly it can be done), I'm willing to pay good money for such a plugin.
Currently I'm using remote buddy to pull it together, but it is not a very elegant solution in my opinion. Having EyeTV inside Frontrow would be fantastic.
I'm even willing to try and build such a plugin myself, but I can only find references to appleTV/backrow... not the new frontrow...
