Attached is ther kernel for running OSX on your AppleTV.

Semthex thanks a lot for this, this is great news and it is a key feature to start exploiting aTV's potential. I would like to ask you and everyone else, what would be better:
1. Install full OS-X and use "frontrow 2.0"

2. Install both OSes and maybe someone could build a custom bootloader so that you can select say full OS-X or aTV's OS (and maybe linux as well .....)

Also I would like to know if frontrow 2.0 installed into a full OS-X supports the plug-ins that have developed around?

To be honset I woudl run appletv finder on osx on this, as it is the correct hardware, it should work retail :P

This Kernel is a huge step forward. But there's still work to be done.

What's not working:

- Accelerated video (QI, QE) and resolution support (locked at 720p)
- Audio
- Ethernet - EDIT: Solution: PCGenRTL8139Ethernet 1.2.0 http://www.sendspace.com/file/4i62j1
- Apple Remote?? (sorry, I haven't tested this yet, so not sure)

I've looked through the Extensions stored in the aTV /System/Library/Extensions directory, but the solution isn't here. Here is a list of the extensions. The checked ones can be safely copied over (but there doesn't seem to be any benefit). Don't copy the X ones:

I think the drivers for the disabled hardware might be located in the .prelink from the aTV. I'm sure Semthex will have some ideas when he wakes up.

OSX nano method is online wich makes a cool dedicated Full OSX box (not powerfull but functionnal and if you want something funny , AppleTV has a better graphic card than the Mac mini)

As a novice at much of this, will there be an image at some point that we simpletons can download and re-image our Apple TV's. I know the question calls for conjecture, but I am curious to hear the thoughts of the folks here.
I bought one of these to use at school (I am a teacher) and it is somewhat useless for the needs I supposed it would be for.

Had to fix it, we needed to block one-click hoster URL and repalce them with ***** cause of continoued posting of links to stuff considred illegal, like files from OSX. Even if we are a hack friendly forum, we do not support copyrigth infrigments here.

Quick question, i see you guys got the Ethernet working, whats the chances of the audio and video acceleration? i mean are they just driver issues or is it somthing more than that blocking it from being possible?

I mean from the video i saw the unit itself seemed pretty snappy i might actually go out and buy one of these, i mean 600+ for a mac mini's too high for my money right now... 300$ on the other hand hehe :) nice price for a toy to play with hehe

My environment worked without trouble.

It made a mistake of me because of having tied to the monitor to which AppleTV was
not auto scanned.

When the monitor was changed, it started without trouble.

groove or one of the others, can you post a video on youtube of say some basic menuvering in the OS, frontrow launching and usage, maybe open safari and a page or 2 ... just to see how slow, slow is. :)

So, how do you unlock the boot.efi file to be able to replace it in the customized OSX for appleTV? That is the only problem I am having in this install..

Just do GET INFO on the file and unmark where it says lock, that's all. Then you can copy over the new boot.efi file and replace it.

So, Im finaly going to hack my apple tv. I have innstalled a version of tiger on a usb hdd, without the printerdrivers etc.

But, how do I get to root on the disk? So, I dont know how to replace the kernel. Explain easy:P the disk the install is on is called atv . I have downloaded a new patchd kernel from this thred.
