Well, this happens all the time. I have a 500 Gig SeaGate SATA and I could not write to it as it was formatted with NTFS on my earlier Windows laptop. So, I was copying all the files to another HFS+ on the same drive so that I could format the partition 1 with HFS+ and move the data back. But It copied 40% of the files and the Mac frooze. Force Quit, Restarting Finder, nothing worded. I even pressed Log Out, Reboot, etc. but it was frozen. However I could open apps like iCal. But could not quit any of them or Log off/reboot.

As soon as I unplugged the HD, it started working fine, all commands were executed and the apps exited and immediately it logged off and rebooted !

Was just wondering whats the issue......

Yes. It is compatible. I formated the partition 1 to HFS+ from my Mac itself.

have you tried on a different mac, or with a different HDD? maybe the problem is your HDD or the USB/FireWire port

No, other HDs work fine with my Mac so the ports are ok. But haven't tried the HD with a different Mac as I only have one.

Hate to say it, but this happens every once and a while in the Mac OS in exactly the way you're describing: any application that tries to read from the affected disk locks up and can not be quit without that disk being disconnected. It's a known issue and at the moment there isn't a solution. Try the copy again, it's a fairly uncommon (and random) problem.

Ok. Hope to see a fix soon....
