[1Password] Free Password Manager !

Finally we have the first FREE Password Manager for the iPhone with double password protection ! Pretty convincing. Just added to the AppStore a day ago. I have downloaded and its just great. The only drawback is you need to buy the Mac version to sync your database, which I have already done.

So, this is just to make everyone aware that now we have a free and great alternative to eWallet and SplashID.! And If you use one of them, you can also import those databases to 1Password! Sweet!

BTW, will the free users get updates when they start charging... ?I guess it's not a free version that will be on AppStore for a limited time. It's probably a version that is free but will stop working at a certain time, when you will be able to upgrade to a paid version.

They want you to get hooked to it first, then they make you pay. And they want to have a high number of downloads, so they will top the list of popular apps the minute it becomes paid (because paid apps generally have a much lower number of downloads than free ones) -- read http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/31/the-strange-economy-of-the-app-store/ about this tactic.

Why is it weird?
People are more likely to buy something that is popular. And on iTunes, popularity is based on the number of downloads.

If an app is #1, people are more likely to try it out than if it was #381, #584 or some other arbitrary triple digit rank.

By weird, I meant giving it out for free and then later charging for the app when the newer version is no longer free.....

I've tried it now for a couple days and really like it. Right now, I find it more likely that it will stay for free, but they hope that people will buy the mac version then. Why I think that way? Because I feel like that right now :) It's nice to have all your stuff on your phone, but it's way more convenient to manage it on an actual computer. We'll see.

Is there any way that I can make a backup of the 1Password database from my phone? I just want to make sure that when I have to restore my phone or something like that, I don't have to put in everything again.

If you have a MAC you can do it via the desktop application 1Password from them.
That version you would have to pay for and that is somewhat the real catch. This app becomes even more useful if you use both apps to always have the latest list on your MAC and iPhone which makes a lot of sense and I do not believe it will stop working just like that, is not known for these things. Last time a paid feature in 1Password for the MAC became free.

Thanks, that's what I figured. Is there any chance someone already tried backing up the plain sql file from the iPhone and restore it that way?
