Look at some details that Blogger Dexter said... on Geohot website,

I wanted to raise Dev Teams antennas up so as to research / understand how to work around the relock issue on the 3G iPhone.

Well, after some research on new iPhone 3G, i can tell you "something" useful/unuseful things:

- "ICE2" modem 01.43.00
- Bootloader 5.9 w/RAM loader
- support FOTA, but i dont know its enabled by default (i think yes, so anytime we unlock our devices, network can relock for us:mad::mad:
- A lot of AT commands
- A self-diagnostic program
- MIDI support
- Sound controller still attached
- FM Radio support (cool)
- a strange MCC+MNC implementation... Dont know exactly what is this
- A looong list of operator names

Well GeoHot, u have a looong, hard job :)

Someone gave him the CarrierOS build for the 3G iPhone, the latest one, and I guess he used strings on it, because he did not really find anything that is groundbreaking or that geohot didn't already know. Those are not the final bootloader/baseband versions, so he kind of just mentioned that for no reason also. As for the carrier list, that is for roaming, it doesn't mean that the iPhone 3G now has exclusive deals with "Texas Wireless" and "Unicel" :P

plus, all nokias (atleast the n-series ones) and SEs have "FOTA". Samsung too. But you have to go to menu and manually download the SW. After nokia bricked a few phones and ALL of Sprints "fusics"(or whatever the hell those things were called) were bricked by forceful FOTA a few years back, I'm pretty sure the Open Mobile Alliance agreed that owners consent was required to install updates. Plus, I doubt there's a company out there with the balls to try forceful updates again. Although.... If ever there was a company arrogant and cocky enough to try it, it would be Apple.

This will surely only effect people who use native PTT sim cards without the IPhone Contract. Other operators can allready tell we are using the iphone and can bar us via our IMEI , they don't.

ummm.. this sound too bad, bcoz apple will force carriers to send "updates" to our iPhones.. and we have a looong cat+mouse game.

I think we should work on disable FOTA, even if this wont be dangerous, its recommendable to disable it (for peaceful reasons;))

Maybe that's the case if you are using ATT, O2 in uk, etc. But I would like to see apple "forcing" T-mobile USA to update a device over the air that they don't even carry... tmobile updates blackberry phones automatically, but I'm sure that BB's updates are no hundred and something megs to be made over edge.

just like anything else, they'll find a way to disable it. Really not ground breaking, just another move in the cat and mouse. ;)

Yeh this is true. I bumped into a Vodafone mobile internet promoting tent today in Paddington station (London, one of the busy stations), and basically they were demonstrating mobile internet. They had a wide selection of phones. SO i made a snide comment about, how Vodafone are losing out coz they lost the iPhone contract to Apple. The guy said, give me an iphone 1 and i will unlock it for you to use in 30 seconds; lol.

Agreed. Apple is not going to be able to force non-partner carriers to push updates over the non-partner networks. And I also agree with others in this thread that automatic updates either won't occur, or will be easily disabled by the community.

Its likely apple will find other ways to force people to update though. For example, if you try to access the mobile iTunes store (music, movies, TV, apps etc), apple can check the version on your phone somehow and refuse access if you aren't running the right version.
They can make iTunes refuse to talk to your phone unless you are running the latest version. (of course, that just leads to people posting/sharing/using old/hacked iTunes builds)

I have no doubt that the 3G iPhone will be cracked though and that hackers will beat whatever apple throws at them (look at Sony and the PSP and how crackers have beaten that time and time again and Sony have the advantage of being able to force a firmware update anytime you insert the latest game disk into your PSP)

It is unlikely as it is very easy to fake an OS version :)

OS versions are not exactly hardcoded. They can easily be modified via .plist file :P Plus, iTunes could easily be patched to fix that if need be

so you think that we'll be able to get the phone and use it with other carriers??

sure, there will be ways around..
