Specifically ...

"iPhone 3G will be available in the UK through O2 and Carphone Warehouse. iPhone 3G will also be sold online through O2 and Carphone Warehouse. Customers can register their interest in iPhone 3G for regular news and updates at www.o2.co.uk. In Ireland, iPhone will be available through O2’s retail channels."

I'm not sure, it doesnt say it would be available online from the Apple website, just O2 and Car phone warehouse, which at a guess I would think that you have to sign up and pass a credit check online before it's shipped.

I know T Mobile do a similar thing if you sign up for a phone on the web.

Only was I can think of getting round it would be to order a pay as you go online

Yep but im afraid they have always sold their contract phones online - this simply means you do the contract signing up on the website etc hence need to whack in credit cards agree to contracts etc and then they run credit check and then you get the phone delivered but with your contract all sealed and dusted!

I did this when I was a UK O2 customer!

Yeah ordering Pay As You Go will be no problem but all the press are speculating the iphone on PAYG will be unsubsidized and expensive (prob same as what we paid for last gen iphone). This looks to be confirmed by the Italian Vodaphone Pay As You Go 3G iphone price that somebody mentioned!

At least we will be able to get our hand on one but it will be at a price and assuming somebody can unlock it as O2 PAYG phones are still locked to their network

Just a thought but isnt it the case with netowkr sin the UK which have pay as you go phones locked to their network you can request to have them unlocked after you've spent X amount of £'s in top ups?

I know Vodafone and Orange have t his policy whereas you can request the phone to be unlocked, some charge a fee, some say as long as you've spent x amount on calls they will unlock, does anyone know what o2's policy is for releasing as as you go handsets free to other networks?

I cant imagine they would have the iphone an exception to the rule if you've bought the phone on pay as you go which means the network hasnt subsidized it

I know that in the past o2 were the only UK company to not lock their PAYG phones, I think that this will change with the iPhone, but who knows.
