$199 and $299 are the prices of the 8gb and 16gb, respectively, WITH contracts. the other prices mentioned here is just speculation for when certain international telco's offer pay as you go plans.. no way in hell are they going to offer $199/299 for pay as you go.

Let me ask you,
Why would O2 customers go for an expensive 18 months subscription and get the 99 pounds (= 199 dollar) Iphone if they can get the damn phone without any subscription for the same price?

did I say that they can not? I know about the O2 pay as you go gig.......

Hey there,
Steve said that in ALMOST every country the price is going to be only 199$ / 299$. The ALMOST ist the most importantant word in the sentence.
Look at the prices from T-mobile Germany http://www.t-mobile.de/iphone/addHandset.do
They will charge you 249€ (=387$) for the 8GB version with the cheapest contract and 499€ (=$776) for the 16GB version with contract. These are the prices from the official T-Mobile Germany website.
So much for Steve's promise of $199 / $299 :(

Look at the site again! It says "only valid until 30.06!" so this is clearly in relation to the 1st gen iPhone!

I think the important part was that he said the phone was going to be available in almost all countries at $199/$299. He didn't say that's the only price point in all the countries.
Obviously this is the price with a certain two-year contract. And obviously, if you go for a more expensive contract, many carriers will give it for free, and if you go for Pay&Go it will be more expensive.

and...the word 3G (iPhone 3G) is not mentioned anywhere on that site. I think those prices are valid for 1Gen iPhone.

To me, it looks like O2 in the UK are going to be offering something quite unique with the Pay-As-You-Go option, if you want a similar freedom from contract you had with a home-activated 1G iPhone.
Although they haven't yet announced the prices for this option (they're probably still working it out - O2's website indicates announcements in early July) if the basic contract package has the iPhone's cost at £99, I'm guessing you'll see easily double that for the pay-as-you-go option.
Don't forget, the iPod Touch here in the UK is £199 for the 8GB model. The iPhone used to be £250, I think. Expect it to be at least £250 for the pay-as-you-go iPhone 3G option.
Once the groovy guys of the Dev team (and others ;-)) manage to work their magic on the 2.0 firmware, I expect this O2 pay-as-you-go option is going to become the main place for people wanting an out-of-contract iPhone 3G experience ;-) It'll make a change to be selling grey-market electronics devices from the UK to the US - it's usually the other way around ;-)

If Vodafone Italy is any guide, we'll be looking at £395 (or £450 for the 16GB model). See http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42957

Yep I reckon it will be similar in UK - Apple will be wanting to protect their ipod for a start!!

Well, Apple doesn't decide the price for pay as you go, it will be left up to O2. O2 will charge depending on how much money it costs them, and adding in the money that will be lost by them by selling it without a contract..
The reason people wanted to hacktivate and unlock initially is because of the price of the device (£269 plus 18month contract), but now the price is reasonable at £99, i don't think many will hack the iphone 3g, instead they wil choose to go officially with O2.

Yes, what i meant was now its £99 plus £30 min contract for 18months, compared to £269 plus the contract. When the first iphone was released i didn't want to pay £269 plus contract coz it was way too expensive. But £99 is the price of ipod nano, and then its the standard contract so it is more affordable. Smart thinking by Apple.

if you listen closely, you hear s. jobs saying "the iphone will sell for no less then 199 in allmost all countries". however, he does not say anything which currency he is talking about. could be 199 $ in USA, 199 € in cont. Europe, 199 £ in UK. Who knows...
my guess is here in europe we´ll get to pay 199€ for the 3G Iphone, according to the usual Apple conversion rate (1$=1€)

Smart thinking by Apple. But you could argue that the old price was £269 plus a much cheaper sim-only contract with the cheapest operator you can find (after unlocking). That option is now gone because you only get the phone when you sign a contract, and from that perspective it's become more expensive.

Jobs said it would sell for no more than $199USD which would be converted to € or £ or ¥. So if $199 is ¥400 then it would sell for no more than ¥400. Make sense?

Yes i see your point. But the reason many went for the unlocked option is because of the expensive phone + contract. Some people who are not competent with computers didn't buy iphones as they didn't know how to unlock, or paied huge amounts of money for people to unlock it for them.
But £99 + contract will make people move to official contract as unlimited data is also included and the warranty will not be invalid.

well...this does not look like 199/299$ max in germany. more like 260/385$ max. at current conversion rate.
though this is not officially confirmed...
