Update: Just bought an iPhone? Listen up: "Customers who purchased a 2.5G iPhone on or after May 27 and want to swap it out for a new iPhone will be able to do so without incurring an additional handset charge for the new device. They will of course need to turn in their 2.5G iPhone." And for the rest of you, AT&T says there's no way to buy it without agreeing to a contract. So sorry

from engadget..

I have a LEGIT iPhone plan. Signed end of Feb. Sold my iPhone last week. I am using a crappy phone.

Do you think I can some how get this phone and then swap it out for the 3G iPhone when I get it?

Please let me know if its a FACT of OPINION.

THanks!!

if you can find a new iphone from apple or at&t then yes, you could.. but you can't, as they're no longer selling them. If you did manage to get one though, you could swap it for 3g, but you'd need to pay a 10% 'restocking' fee

That's the joke. :D

The online store was sold out long before that, and people reported that it was nearly impossible to buy an iphone in the last month, so Jobs can probably count on one hand how many free 3g phones he's going to have to give out. ;)
