Hey all,

So far all I can find is where Engadget tested it and they got 215Kbps vs 105 Kbps on the 1st gen iPhone. Yeah 215 is 2x as fast, but that's it? I thought HSDPA was supposed to be upwards of 3Mbps?

I really hope I'm mistaken.

Anyone know how fast 3G really is for the iPhone?

Technically, 3G uses R99 bearers which tops 384kbps download speed for most 3G phones out there. So on average, you may get 200+ kbps on a R99 bearer.

HSDPA is a 3.5G technology and can go up to 14.4Mbps download speed in best condition and with the right phone hardware support. Depending on the category of the phone design, currently deployed network can support peak download rate of 7.2Mbps in most of the countries and about 1.8Mbps for AT&T in the US. The average download speed in AT&T's HSDPA network is around 600kbps.

So, my guess is the guys at Engadget either did not choose a good spot (with decent signal) to test or, the services that they are using to test did not get granted a HSDPA channel.
