i'm on o2 the only reason i hacked was to avoid the rediculously priced contract - i'm going to buy it so i don't have to hack

since you live over there it would be easier for you to find out about the deals. i was just wondering, is it possible for a person like me living in NYC to buy it straight off of o2? my guess is no, but do you know of any ways to work around the system? i really really want to buy one but i don't want to sign a contract with AT&T, which you probably know by now is what they're forcing us to do in the States. :(
thanks!

i just checked that site and it says you can purchase online if you're over 18. too bad they're probably not going to ship it overseas.

What nonsense! Not only is not everybody on O2, and Pay as you go doesn't mean it's unlocked!

Im not on O2 and dont intend to be as I find they've got poor coverage where I like
I'm with T Mobile, would like a Iphone 2.0 and to stay with T Mobile
I;m sure someone will come up with a way to free 2.0 for use with any network if you buy it on PAYG. Might take a while but it's just original 1.1 all over again

I am Happy with O2 pay and go. I hope they will let us use an existing O2 contract sim with the iphone, as it is so easy to get really cheap cashback deals on O2.

In UK, anyone can go into a store and purchase a pay as you go phone. You don't have to be a UK resident to buy one. As long as you pay in the right currency :D

i think because o2 are releasing iphone pay as you go as well as contracts i reakon it'll probably be a safe bet at&t will over there, because there were roumers flying around about the 3g iphone going on pay as you go in america so i reakon it'll be safe to bet that it'll be over there 2 but we've just gotta wait for july 11th then we shall all know if not -ebay

lol.. i think you misunderstood me. i'm not asking if there's going to be pay as you go plans in the united states. i already know that at&t won't offer it here. i'm just asking if a person living in america can buy the iphone from o2 as a pay as you go phone. i'll shop internationally if i have to. but the question is, will o2 or any other international telco's that offer pay as you allow this?

well i don't know then, i don't think they will unless you buy from the uk or that country, and then they would have to but you would have to be in the same country. at least thats my best bet

o2 will only ship to a registered uk address. The only way round it is if you know someone in the uk to get it shipped to their address and then they can send it on to you.

Yeh, you can buy any phone in UK on pay as you go. Doesn't matter where you intend to use the phone. Its only contract phones that require credit check and UK address.

Yes this is true for online purchase. But if you are in UK on a holiday etc, then you can buy it from O2/carphonewarehouse store.

Well then the only option for you is to ask someone who knows you to buy and post it to you, or buy it on ebay. ebay option will probably cost more. I sure hope the pay as you go option is not too expensive. If they charge over £300, then i wouldn't get it.

But surely you could unlock it as you are not bound to a contract right ?
It all depends on if the great iPhone Dev team can do it :)

I hope it can be unlocked. But £400 is way too steep. Some websites claimed it was £269 with pay as you go. I hope its near the £300 mark.

Yes that is a problem
I don't really like 02, they dont do many good offers.
Do you think they'll offer free 3G browsing on pay as you go ?
After unlocking (if possible) the problem will be the cost of 3G browsing may being high on other networks....

In UK, we don't get charged by what internet we use GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA.
We pay a single monthly charge usually £7.50 a month, and then get a certain limits (O2:200mb, Vodafone 120mb, T-mobile: 1GG etc).
Otherwise its pay as you use, with being billed per mb of data you use.

I live in the UK :)
I thought 02 would give us free data but just put a monthly allowance on it.
Otherwise, whats the point buying it on Pay as you go if they're going to charge you monthly for data.

On the o2 website, it says that there will be an iPhone pay & go sim.
This suggests that maybe you will not be able to use simpliciy in it unless it is unlocked. Which is annoying as thats what I was planning to do as its muh better value than pay & go.
What does everyone think?

I think you will have to use a special pay as you go simcard, its not unlocked so it will be resricted to a special sim.
If the lockdown was patched you could use any 02 UK sim, i think...

My friend is going to Scotland during the time the new one comes out, could he pick me up a pay as you go o2 version and bring it back to the US? Does a UK phone work in the US? Also, would it be impossible to get one in July without waiting in line at the apple store on the 11th?

Hi
I dont think the iphone will be sold on pay and go at launch. The reason being they want the contract sales and normally dont offer top end phones straight away on pay and go
If you did get one then it would work subject to someone bringing a unlock method out just like any phone
regarding Q's
I can remember when the first PS3 and the first iphone in the UK was out, there was massive press how people had waited inline all day at the stores to get 1
This was true, but only at the LONDON launch store. I can remember going to the stores in Sheffield and in fact the apple store and being told we have loads and no queues at all
Its about the hype
There is a Apple store in Glasgow if you need one or you can goto any of the o2 stores in scotland
cjunky
06-14-2008, 01:59 PM
its definitely all about the hype. During the iPhone launch last year apple was very careful to "channel" customers to key stores where they had also invited press.
If you pre-ordered you were sent to one of only a few selected stores so as to maximise the queues and make people perceive that there was a huge demand for the phone. Especially the press.
I wandered past the London store and almost all the people in the queue were invited guests, journalists and one or two preorder customers.
yet all the other stores were almost empty :) we can expect similar shenanigans on july 11.
its interesting that apple is now allowing subsidised handsets and pay as you go sales. i wonder if they are going to give up on the exclusivity next....
regarding the comments about pay-go and whether you will be able to use existing sims, its unlikely that o2 will produce a special set of sims for the iPhone. they will just be provider locked to O2 so your existing pay-go sim should work fine.
just like they did last time around.

Guys, I just called O2 in england and asked about the price for the iphone, and I told the guy that according to the Daily Mail it will cost 267 uk pounds, but he said that that price is just a speculation, that even they don't even know how much it is going to cost, as they are still negotiating with apple or something like that..........dang

I hope that now it's being sold as a PAYG handset, O2 scrap this ridiculous policy of not letting you pay by cash.
Currently you can only pay by credit or switch card. I've never heard of anyone rejecting cash as legal tender for exchange of goods/services. It's totally mental.
