1. yes, look here http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/maps.html
2. no
3. yes, via Wi-Fi or triangulation of cell towers (need fw 2.0)
4. Yes and no, Apple would have to de-cripple bluetooth for an elegant method. i am sure there will custom solutiomns using the dock available (search the forum)

You were asking if dedicated software is needed for GPS. The answer is no. TomTom's announcement is for upcoming iPhone only, as far as I understand the announcement. If they have an external module, it would work on recent models aswell.
In terms of software: Apple is using Maps for GPS, showing your position and movement. If you are talking about Navigation, Google's router function might not be the best solution. That's where TomTom is gonna play.

It's already working since Beta 3 of FW 2.0. It`s following you but relies on the Locate feature of Google Maps. So if locate works fine where you are, that "soft gps" will.

I forgot the post but I do have screenshots made in Hamburg mid April. Check the two screenshots

I tried 2.0 Beta 3 for awhile; I can tell its accuracy is a lot better than 1.1.4, but still it is not good enough to be running with GPS software because it is still off by a lot if you are using EDGE. With Wifi is fine though, it is very accurate with wifi.
It will auto refresh every minute or less I believe.

Nevertheless, I think the GPS is usable even it is off a lot. (maybe 500 yards on EDGE, not sure).

I heard later Betas is even better, so I think with Final firmware 2.0 we might be able to use GPS software on the 1st generation Iphone.
