To be honest there could well be the ability to video with the new iphone, and for bluetooth filetransfer, included in the firmware, as the hardware is capable. Also mms can easily be added by a 3rd party app, or it may be in the new firmware.
The only thing im dissapointed with is the fact the camera wasnt upgraded at all, but then again that doesnt matter too much to me.
But the price has gone down so that more than compensates for the camera for me.

What a huge dissapointment - after selling my iphone about 6 months ago, to get more than i paid for it, in anticipation of buying the new forthcoming 3g phone, i'm glad i have good cash to spend elsewhere.
Apples attempts at innovation really have gone the extra mile - lets see what have we extra from 2g to 3g ?
Almost same case (slightly thinner)
Same capacity as old phones 8gb\16gb.
Dire 2.0megapixel camera
Ohhh one extra colour for punters who shell out for 16GB, White...
No mention yet on the technical specs about video calling, or video capturing..
Utterly dissapointed. Making punters wait a month will be Apples biggest downfall - by then the critics will have slated the device, hampering sales..
Not for me this time....

Im the only one dissapointed? dont get me wrong i own an iphone and i love it, $200 for a new iphone is very very nice, the new apps look so good but even the old 4gb phone will get them, the really new features are A-GPS and 3G, the rest is the same, no camera improvements, no copy paste , no mass storage mode, no flash, no dual camera,no A2DP?it lacks imo.

$10 more a month for data.
I was actually planning on getting a legit iPhone contract until I saw AT&T is going to charge $10 more a month for a limited 3G network.
F that. Keeping my current plan and waiting for the unlock/jailbreak. Still no visual voicemail for me.

The plastic is gonna make it look and feel cheap. one thing i loved about the original is the all metal back that gave the phone a nice weight and made it very durable. It felt like an actual high-tech gadget. other than that pretty much same complaints everyone else has. I was gonna sell my 8gig and get a new one but now i think i might just sell my 8gig and get a 1st gen 16 gig.

Apparently the case (at least the back of it) is made of plastic. Now that has me worried about heat dissipation...but it is only $199 beats buying an ipod.

I'm surprised that they didn't update the camera, but i'm not in any way disappointed. As far as cell phone cameras go, higher MPs lose significance after a certain point due to the inherent lower quality optics. The only thing a 3 or 4 megapixel sensor would have gave you is more wasted disk space as I doubt the pictures would be any better quality.
A-GPS, btw, is better than regular GPS, unlike what all the blogs are saying. A-GPS gets a quicker fix because it combines cell tower triangulation with regular (full-featured) GPS. Also, TomTom has already announced their software for the iPhone, and it looks pretty sweet, so i'm not too worried about turn-by-turn not being included by default.
I'm worried about the price; Believe it or not, I think it's too low. I was prepared to spend $750, and I can't imagine that $300 is going to give me the same level of quality that I expected. Plastic back? No 32gb? Ugh.
The thing that breaks the deal for me, however, is that AT&T is going to be increasing the data rate to $30/month for the 3G iPhone (no it's not a rumor, it's confirmed).
HBKDinobot
06-10-2008, 01:42 AM
Yes the $10 a month is a deal breaker for me. I have Media Net which I believe I can activate to be 3G or already is 3G (not sure never had a 3G phone), so I'm hoping with the unlock of the new phone I can use 3G without touching my current plan.

I can't believe that everyone is bothered about a front facing camera. Seriously, do you folks in the US actually use video calling, because even though we've had it for years, I know absolutely nobody in the UK that uses it. Fuck the front camera, who needs it.
As to the rest of the features, The Maestro is right when he/she says that most could come in updates or 3rd party apps.
Chill people, did you really expect anything other than 3G and GPS? I know that I didn't.

Where exactly is everyone getting this o2 info, the o2 website has had nothing on it all day and all night, and earlier when I spoke to the iPhone support team, they had no idea when the 3G is coming or what deals they may or may not have. The girl I spoke to also mentioned that when the original iPhone was released, the staff being trained about the features 2 weeks before launch did not even know that it was the iPhone they were being trained on (I find that hard to believe, but who knows). Anyway where is this extremely dodgy info coming from?

The whole pay as you go iphone is a total myth so far all I knwo is that:
o2 is the official & EXCLUSIVE UK seller (no other networks) & secondly on the apple website in the how to buy an iphone section they have now taken down online option and replaced it with Apple shop/exclusive carrier shop hence I am 100% certain it is a sign up contract job before you will get your hands on one.
iPhone atlas claim they have confirmed info that signing up via itunes is finished however not sure if they are accurate and cant remember the source

I think its bull that they didnt put flash support on the phone. Also that people have to enter a new contract in order to get one. Oh yeah and now 10 bucks more for the data plan.
I hope the apple people read these forums and take what people say to heart.

I gotta agree with the above except bluetooth... that is definitely a anti-piracy tactic. My biggest thing is the lack of a camera in the front. I know there are lots of really "enthusiastic" people telling us to shush about the camera and stop stomping on Apple's momentous occasion. (Also, I am seriously very excited about the 3G iPhone as well and by no means am saying this is a complete letdown)
However, come on! this may be one of the first phones with 3G capability that has no front camera for video calling :S That is like producing a car with no glove compartments! or maybe a chair with a hole in the seat! it is just poor design! I own enough ipods, a mac book, a mac desktop to realize: APPLE DOES NOT SUCK AT DESIGN! Come on, most design students would agree with me on this! But seriously, this is a flaw in their thinking.
Also if any of you iPhone fanatics are also Jap Exotic/Euro/Asia import phone fantatics... That side of the world sincerely loves video calling (well at least I am positive Asia does...) So if you see the crazy world of Japanese phones, they twist and turn in so many ways to ensure that video talking is easy, fun, and convenient! (Google the 905i and 906i series of DoCoMo)
Anyways enough of my random rant. I still love the large bright touch screen. IMHO it's still the best touchscreen phone available. However I would just say that, the biggest letdown of all will be if Apple sees this and schedules another 32GB upgrade at the beginning of next year with a front facing camera and further alienate all us "enthusiastic" iPhone addicts by killing the 8GB 3G iPhone. *sigh*

-no front facing camera.. wtf? what's the point of 3g then? no video calling...... :(
-plastic back-i think that apple tried to save too much money on this model, a metal finish is a lot better.. like the newer ipods.
-no better camera
-no mms
-no flash-online experience is seriously crappier on iphone without flash installed
i do like that the headphones plug problem got fixed, and it gets a bit better battery life... but c'mon! this phone seems a bit rushed, and a bit of a quick cheap upgrade.... or should i say.. a quick production cost reduction.
and definitely.... no 3g 1700MHZ band for T-Mo, and no 'home-activation' is just a HUGE disappointment!
Doktaphex
06-10-2008, 05:50 AM
I guess I can understand about the home activation thing upsetting people (doesn't bother me as I have an iPhone contract) but before apple did it, nobody else had, so you can understand why they have gone to the same route as all other phone manufacturers, there have and will always be ways of getting whatever phone you want without a contract. Trust me, give it time, where there's a will, there's a way.

I am just disappointed at the new Data Plan price, $30.00!!!! I mean we are getting hit by other higher prices [like gas or food] and now a $10 on the Data Plan? C'mon, seriously, if AT&T wants more costumers they really should keep their old Data Plan price.
Here is more on that. Many RIM, Samsung, LG and other PDA-like, smartphones that have 3G pay the $20. Thats called the Blackberry Data plan or whatever, $20, same as the iPhone's Data plan. Now $30 more on iPhone users, because we surf more? To hell with that, new Data Plan IMHO is gonna be a deal breaker.
As for the iPhone itself, its gorgeous, marvelous and sweet. Anything it lacks can easily be software updated [except front cam, but I don't care for that front cam].
So, iPhone as a device excellent new product, AT&T decision to get more $$ off of us, bad move.

I really can't believe this plastic back crap. I think that totally cheapens the look of the iphone. In the iphone 1 we had this great aluminum and glass beauty, and now with the drop in price (more people will be able to get one) and the cheap plastic I think it is becoming less distinctive.
I hope that at least the plastic is the rumored "zirconium" or something better than cheap regular plastic. The aluminum back is so scratch resistant and eye catching. I hate this.

I tryed the first phone with ATT contract. Will never have ATT service again. I hate them. Sold my iphone few weeks ago for a good price, was planning to use the money for the new iphone.
-$30 data plan... deal breaker, seriously I can get local cable for this much.
-unable to buy easy without contract
Sorry Apple, ATT, and even US government. I will not stand for these type of nazi gastopo tactics. You buy this phone you have to pay this month and only from them. I simply cannot buy this device because of the principle of the situation.
Sorry iphone, I'm going to have to skip you this time around.

So since this is a 3G iPhone, does that mean on road trips through areas that don't have 3G coverage I will not be able to use the internet (when WiFi is unavailable), or does it also have EDGE backup? That is an extreme disappointment if they expect people to only be able to use the internet when in a 3G area or WiFi area.
It supports both, don't worry...

yes it is pretty disappointing that hardly any new features were added but i believe that apple is not trying to make the iphone owners upgrade to the new phone, they just want to have more customers.
especialy in europe since 3g is available everywhere atleat here in austria where i live. every provider has 3g everywhere its nothing new or big....so alot of people here were sayin "yea its a cool phone but without 3g it way to slow" and whatever....
i dont have any internet in my contract with t-mobile so 3g doesnt give me s***
so im actually kinda gladd they didnt add anything new that is useful for me because i dont have the money to upgrade....and they are keeping that hardware sp similar so that the apps work for the old and new iphone...
they are not neglecting the old iphones which is good.
so 2.0 Iphone FW will be the same for 1st gen and 2nd gen.
thats my opinion
Camera, you call the original iphone thingy a camera, you cant take photos in low light so a flash/light would be obvious and easy addition, mechanic zoom using the volume button and a better 5mil pixel camera! All basic and stupid of Apple not doing it! And let's not even mention video!

The main reason not to buy this new iPhone is the Apple policy to lockdown their customers.
The second reason is:
The crippled Bluetooth and now the GPS (No voice assistance and itinerary calculation) with its simple refreshed pin to tell you "you are here", really lame...
The third reason is the Camera's joke. come on 2MP...
Guess who's gonna introduce a new "obsolete" camera sensor for the 3rd Gen iPhone.
I'll stay on my 16GB 1st Gen iPhone and will not buy this joke until they unlock the features that should have been there since day first.
Apple's "think different" is gone, say hello to "you are free to do what we want you to do".

For me the big thing is the camera. I dont care about the front facing camera, but come on, my problem with the gen 1 was always the lack of a good camera and a flash!!... We all new 3g + gps were coming but i really was hoping for a good camera!!!!
Also the lack of a 32g model, i really thought that was on the cards to.... As for the choice of colors thats Apple, apart from iPod shuffles they dont offer any of there products in anything other than black of white, and Apple products look great! The plastic back i am not sure about but I think only time will tell, will have to wait to get my hands on one.
The other thing is the business of activating. Someone made a good point earlier that what if a phone needs to be restored? Are genuine users going to need to go back to O2 shops every time? I think this is another case of time will tell as to how this will work and how they will be sold, and O2 are saying on there website that they will be selling PAYG versions! Problem solved! ;) (although how much will they be??... Lol.)

I suspect Apple is rushing a product that, should have had another 6 months design time built into the planning phase. The phone's spec's are mediorce at best. Given other suppliers already have 3g with internet built in + GPS + 8GB Storage etc, this showing from apple is dissapointing at best. The ONLY thing it has going for it is the £100 price tag. My view is the 16Gb should be £100, with the 8GB @ £69.99.
Anyway, you can bet your bottom dollar within 3 months - the 8GB will be obsolete, 16GB the base, 32GB maybe even a 64GB storage, and they HAVE to stick a front facing camera in the phone.
For me personally, i wont be buying it, there are better phones out there at this moment in time..

Totally agree however isnt this what apple normally do?
E.g. trickle things slowly into a product hence they can keep releasing new gens!
Im sure they have not done things like new camera, better GPS on purpose so in 6 months time we will be stunned when a new revided model comes out and we al go WOW!

Don't get me wrong it is a nice update, but that’s all it is, nothing revolutionary like the v1 was.
I thought the haptic keyboard could have been a cool addition if done properly, maybe a slightly better camera, definitely with 30fps video capability and a flash for photos.
Sticking with the same screen and processor was kind of necessary as keeps both models on the same dev platform which is pretty important for such small market share, would have been a disaster to leave the v1 behind.

so the gps is poo,
the camera sint any better,
the 3g i dont have where i live
the phone looks worse
bluetooth is still poo
the capacity isnt any better
the sound doesnt look to be any better
biggest problem - new improved DAC unit
i was hoping for 5mp camera
gps like the stand alone units
bluetooth
32gb
perhaps some competitors will be able to better it, fingers crossed
well, i was all ready to sell my 1st g iphone but not now, i much prefer the look of the old one too

they are doing the same thing like they did with the ipod...or similar...
in the beginning stages it was only capacity and size and the click wheel.....then they added color screen but only with photos. then with video...then capacity again and so on...now they are prettey much done with the ipod so they made the ipod touch...this is all strategy...
i didnt expect anything HUGE with this new iphone release...i mean...the first gen iphone has only been available for a year...i was only suprized that they released a new one so soon...they will make major changes in another year or two....
then i will expect apple too add a better cam...MUCH better and so on...and we'll see what the app store brings

Anyone else think the Nokia N96 might have the new iphone bested?

Yes but they are not official features, so you won't get Apple support for it and you must Jailbreak your phone to add them.
Let's hope to see some free or low pricey apps coming up on the AppStore to fill the gap Apple has intentionally made to have something to pretend in the next iPhones releases.
