Have you seen on the 3G iPhone page on the Apple Shop that there will be a SIM ejector tool in the box. Now, why would anyone who's on a contract want to take out his SIM card? Could this be an indication that we will be able to buy the phone without contract?

i honestly dont understand why everyone is thinking that you are forced to sign up for the contract as soon as you buy the phone.

No. You Dont. on apples page they state that the AT&T service is sold separately.

I was thinking the exact same thing before. Let's hope Apple have seen the error of their ways and decide to sell it unlocked... even if it's slightly dearer :)

Well, previously anybody visiting the same page would be in no doubt that you could only use the phone with an official providers' contract. On the UK page, the reference to O2 are kept to a bare minimum. I haven't spotted anything on it that would make an iPhone newbie believe that in order to use the phone I need to get on an O2 contract.

My theory is that the ejector tool is basically there so that legit iPhone contract customers can upgrade in store and just swap sims. I could be wrong quite easily, but I think that this is the plan. No dock in the box is a bit lame I guess, but hey I have one already.

[COLOR="black"]i can see it now... yuppy pricks going into apple stores and saying
-"I have misplaced my sim ejector tool, how much for a new one?"
-"umm.. 20 bucks!!"

hey man... you gotta remember they did cut down half(!) the price...
you can't sell a better phone for less without having to drop out a few things...
and after unlocking many iphones in israel i have to say that the vast majority of iphone users here don't really care for the dock...

btw... i just noticed that they require a 2 year minimum contract with AT&T in the us... was it like this before as well? at the start you could've picked out your own plan... oh well...

I don't care about the dock, and I fully understand why they're not putting one in the box. They can sell one to people who simply must have one for lots of money.

With the contract thing, yeah you had to get the 2 year contract, IF you bothered activating with at&t. It looks as though they will be doing what most other phone manufacturers do and sell the phone with a contract to subsidise the cost.

i wasn't talking about unlocking or not...
first time around - if i remember correctly - it didn't matter which contract you had with AT&T.
now if you want a legit iphone running on at&t you have to go for at least 2 years... is it no so?

Nope, all original iPhone at&t contracts were 2 year ones, no matter what amount of talk time was included.

AT&T requires in store activation for the 3G iPhone now.

It seems that they won't sell it online :(

Make sure you keep it in a safe place. You will need it 2 years later.

That's just legal jargon for saying "not included in the price".

on the o2 website, you can buy it pay as you go. as far as i can see that is the only real use for it, because for contracts you just activate the sim in the phone.

Stop speculating about the SIM ejector tool in the box... Has nothing to do with contract-free iphones.. The reason they included it was that they saw the stocks of paper clip makers skyrocket when unlockers around the world figured they didn't need to keep their bended clips handy and could bend a new one every time they wanted to pop the sim tray open... Now Apple wants that business too ;)

Disclaimer: That was a joke, don't make any investment decisions based on that :)

Just bought an iPhone? Listen up: "Customers who purchased a 2.5G iPhone on or after May 27 and want to swap it out for a new iPhone will be able to do so without incurring an additional handset charge for the new device. They will of course need to turn in their 2.5G iPhone." And for the rest of you, AT&T says there's no way to buy it without agreeing to a contract. (APPLE STORE & AT&T) So sorry.

The new iPhone isnt going to fit in the old docks, so if you want a dock for it youll have to buy the new one.

I don't think this is good news!

I think buying from Apple store then using Dev Team Tools is not possible any more, Thanx Apple! ;)

lol. now people have to spend 24 months contract ($30/month) to get an iPhone 3g. that would total up to 24 months contract $720 + subsidized iphone $199 = $919 without tax.

forcing the contract on ppl also means no iphone 3G on ebay :D

no dock because the back is rounded. it won't fit on an existing dock... they'll probably have to make a newer dock later on "sold separately".

I don't use my dock anyway because I've got a clear plastic case on my iphone - meaning that it won't fit on the dock unless I remove the case. oh well...

I hope they won't force in-store activation. It would suck... but I doubt it - there's always a loop hole... and I hope internet purchases will be available.

HANG ON ------ a GREAT LIE would be as follows:

me: hey, I'm buying this phone for my friend whose birthday is coming up next week. I want to give him/her the phone as a present but of course I can't sign a contract for him/her.

sales: well, you could always purchase give apple credits as the present (I'm not sure whether is possible)

me: no -- you see, i want to pack the present nicely and wrapped up so you know, so it would look nice on the day... and I want to buy both the white and the black one coz im not sure which colour he/she prefers. I'll return the other one after the birthday (actually I'm gonna keep both).

blablabla.

I call it a paper clip in a plastic wrapper.

(For any of you who know what Hansa is, us Norwegians also invented and perfected the paperclip).
