iClarified received something through a tipster

An anonymous tipster emailing from a Telstra address is claiming that the 3G iPhone will be released publicly in Australia on July 1st.

The 3G iPhone will publically release in Australia on July 1, 2008 being the day the Sydney Apple Store is opened by the minister of telecommunications. I cannot disclose my source but this is locked in.

We are unable to verify the source; however, this timing would be in line with expectations.

Unless I am very much mistaken there is no way Telstra will be carrying the iPhone in Australia. Has any other carrier in the world, so far agreed to by Apple, have their own music, video, dvd and TV show download service that is totally opposed to iTunes?

I just can't see Steve Jobs agreeing to a carrier promoting ( very heavily mind you) a range of services that is a direct competitor of iTunes, and also a carrier that basically hates anything with the name Apple or MAC - Try talking to any of their help desk people and mention those words.

Sorry but it will be Optus followed by Vodafone and it seems now '3', that will be the iPhone carriers in Australia. Optus info has flagged an August release, but it could be earlier. Like AT&T, Optus have been rolling out and commissioning their 3G network at a very fast pace in regional areas of Australia, as has Vodafone. I have heard of an internal Telstra email that has told staff that they will NOT be having the iPhone as their (Telstra's) network is too technologically advanced for the iPhone.

And the most recent date given for the opening of the Apple Store in Sydney was actually given as June 9 if anything I would more guess a June 11 (June 10 US) being more like it. Nothing would be better than letting Steve announce at WWDC then have a store opening a few hours later with whoever holding a new iPhone and saying "Available Now!" :)
