View Full Version : [Fact/Rumor] 2nd Gen(3G) iPhone

Information confirmed about the new iPhone and rumored.
What is 3G?
The 3G iPhone will support an Infineon-based S-GOLD3H 3G chip that will enable HSDPA speeds up to 7.2Mbps (not US confirmed) apart from the current 2.5G iPhone.
Fact/Rumor
Fact - Mossberg had stated that a 3G version of the current iPhone will be available in about 60 days and later withdrew his statement.
Fact - A shortage in current first gen. iPhones makes an indication however it was reported Apple made a 10 million stock transaction with Taiwan Company Hon Hai (Foxconn.)
Rumor - The new iPhone will introduce a slightly thicker casing then the current, contain a real GPS interface, self facing video call camera, and more practical "plasticy" gloss case such as first gen iPods. These were all stated but never confirmed by trusted sources.
Fact - After examining the latest beta software 2.0 provided to SDK developers hidden in the ISPW was a GPS file, a Bluetooth file, and a 3G file witch was executed by one developer to reveal a switch to manipulate the 3G state.
Fact - Apple executive Gene Munster in an unusually cautious (for him) research note on Tuesday advised investors to keep their expectations for the capabilities of the 3G iPhone “in check.” He said the phone is likely to be nearly identical to the current iPhone in form and function.
Rumor - AT&T's listing a new iPhone model, called the iPhone Black, on its account management site. This was later removed a stated to be a place holder on the website.
Fact - An internal memo within AT&T has surfaced stating retail employees won’t be allowed to take vacations from June 15 to July 12 because of a “special summertime promotion.”
Fact - (5/21/08) With all focus on the 3G iPhone no one stopped to think AT&T was not capable of supporting such speeds. AT&T has now revealed that "in the next month, the company will deploy High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) technology in the six remaining markets across AT&T's entire 3G (third-generation) wireless broadband network."
Fact - (5/23/08) Telstra CEO, Sol Trujillo confirms the new 3G iPhone will reach speeds up 10 42Mbps. Currently, next G customers are able to achieve speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps. “We have an evolution roadmap with Ericsson which will deliver customers speeds of 21 Mbps in 2008 across our national Next G network - a world first - and 42 Mbps in 2009 using HSPA+ technology. Our partnership with Ericsson continues to break the speed barrier,” Trujillo said.
Rumor - (5/24/04) Multiple containers of what were marked as “electric computers,” to Apple, Inc arrived in the US and Canada bound. Neither Apple, Quanta, nor any other company has ever used this product description for any shipments to the U.S as they have used "Desktop Computers" for such hardware. Speculation is that these are the long awaited 3G iPhones stated if so 44,000 are able to fit in each container.
Release
As we draw near whats rumored to be the 3G iPhones release, Gizmodo has recently confirmed the rumors by saying “someone very, very close to the 3G iPhone launch has told me that Apple will announce their new model at the WWDC Keynote on June 9th.”
Official release date has yet to be confirmed.
Retail Price
AT&T's CFO stated recently that no pricing has been set for the upcoming 3G iPhone
Pictures
Rumor - Untill a photo of the second generation iPhone is release by Apple itself all photos are tentative if not completely ridiculous. These are photos rumored to be off the new device.

Great post. Just to clarify, the evidence found in the 2.0 beta firmware made no mention of improved bluetooth, and the only indicator that GPS might be coming was a switch named "Location Services" which could easily just mean cell tower triangulation (and making that info available to 3rd party apps).

Inside the latest ISPW beta is "HeadsetBT", "HeadphonesBT", "RoleA2DP" , and "RoleGPS". The name headset and headphones hopefully imply an integrated version and as far role GPS that isnt present in current firmwares but who knows? thanks anyway

Apple News | 3G iPhone to Reach Speeds of 42Mbps on Telstra?
Friday, 23rd May 2008, 10:05 am
Telstra CEO, Sol Trujillo, has announced that network speeds will be super-charged to 21 Mbps in 2008, with further plans to double the figure to 42Mbps sometime in 2009.
An anonymous official has told ChannelNews that the phone will "by Xmas" support the planned upgrade to the advanced HSPA+ wireless standard on Telstra's 3G network. This will help drive sales since network speeds will be faster than many fixed-line broadband services, the executive asserts.
AT&T's mobility chief Ralph de la Vega has said that their company's HSPA network will be improved from the theoretical peak downloads of 3.6 megabits per second to about 20 megabits per second in 2009.

Apple News | New 3G iPhone Already in USA, Canada?
Friday, 23rd May 2008, 05:05 pm
Since mid-March, Apple Inc. and its logistics partners have imported 188 ocean containers of a product type never before declared on its shipping manifests, reports ImportGenius.com.
By analyzing thousands of U.S. customs records for Apple Computer, employees of the search engine for container shipment data identified a major spike in imports generated by a new product type.
“They have never before reported this product on their customs declarations,” says Ryan Petersen of ImportGenius.com. “The fact that they are importing millions of units, combined with dwindling stocks of the first generation of iPhones, clearly supports the Citi analysts predictions.”

Oh i forgot to add this also
On March 19 Quanta delivered 20 ocean containers of merchandise, described on the Bills of Lading as “electric computers,” to Apple, Inc. Neither Apple, Quanta, nor any other company has ever used this product description for any shipments to the U.S.
The advanced features of the iPhone make it perfectly legitimate for Apple to declare the products as computers, rather than telephones.
ImportGenius.com also notes that over the last few months shipments of “desktop computers” and other devices did not fall off, indicating that these “electric computers” represent a new product for the company rather than a simple renaming for their Customs declarations.
Several of those products carried the Apple computer name in what appeared to be an accidental disclosure on the customs record. With arrival notification addresses in Vancouver, Canada, many of Schenker’s shipments appeared destined for the Canadian market. Apple has thus far not made the iPhone available in Canada, however Rogers Wireless recently announced that it would begin offering the item shortly.

New iPhone 2.0 Beta Adds Photo Geo-tagging
Thursday, 22nd May 2008, 11:05 am
A new iPhone 2.0 Beta Update released privately to a select group adds geo-tagging support for photos, according to an AppleInsider report. The release is labeled build 5A292g.
In location-aware services such as "Maps" and "Camera" the software now asks the user's permission before transmitting data used to identify their current geographical location.
In addition, Apple has added a new switch under the iPhone's general preference pane that will allow users to enable/disable Location Services on a system-wide basis.
Geo-tagging adds geographical location data to files so that those files can later be referenced, searched, and grouped based on their origin.

AT&T CEO outs 3G iPhone: "You'll have it next year"
by Thomas Ricker, posted Nov 29th 2007 at 4:04AM
Of course the 3G iPhone is coming, that's clearly in the evolution plan. As Jobs said himself, it's only a matter of time until improved batteries allow for it. Still, when AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson says, "You'll have it next year," well, our ears tend to perk up. The remark was made at a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara. He didn't say how much it could cost admitting that Jobs and Apple "will dictate what the price of the phone is." However, it wouldn't surprise us if fits back into the $599 slot vacated by the 8GB iPhone while toting a full 16GB of flash like the iPod touch.
so yeah we getting it, im just shaking all over.......i love apple iPhone

AT&T Has No Price for 3G iPhone
Sunday, 25th May 2008, 08:05 pm
AT&T has no price for the 3G iPhone according to Chief Financial Officer Rick Lindner.
“There’s not been a product announcement. There hasn’t been any pricing decisions made. That’s yet to come,” CFO Rick Lindner told the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in New York.
Linder said AT&T, has more than 2.5 million iPhone customers, with the average subscriber paying close to $100 a month on services after spending as much as $500 for the phone.
“It comes down to economics, how many units you think you can sell at different price points,” Lindner said. “That’s how pricing is determined on just about any device.”

think its gonna be one color anyway either black and white and who said they will ship with 2.0?
they will have to ship with 2.0. First, 2.0 is the firmware that contains that switch to turn 3G on and off. Second, it will be released on the same day as the official 2.0, so when steve introduces 2.0 i presume it will be on the new 3G iPhone. also, they would not call it "2.0" unless it was something big: it would normally have been called 1.2.0. But this is "2.0" as it is "version 2," like the "version 2 iphone." a fresh start. Also apple would not ship a new product with an old firmware version on it; if 2.0 is ready when the 3G iphone is, it will have 2.0. You will not see a 3G iphone running 1.1.4, 1.1.3, 1.1.2, 1.1.1, 1.0.2, 1.0.1 or 1.0.0.
And on the note of "2.0 is like a new version," it's like this: The first gen iPhone, when released, came with version "1.0" or "1.0.0." The second gen with come with "2.0" or "2.0.0" It all just makes sense.
I rest my case :)

Phone, iPods to be Solar Powered?
Monday, 26th May 2008, 12:05 pm
A recent patent discovery by MacRumors indicates that Apple is investigating the use of solar power in mobile devices.
Solar power has been investigated for some time by manufacturers; however, major issues such as space and durability have always been a roadblock.
The most interesting technique described by Apple, however, is the integration of the solar panels behind the actual LCD screen of a portable device. The solar panel would absorb ambient light that passes through the LCD screen of the device. This could eliminate any additional footprint typically required by the solar panels. If successfully implemented, Apple's iPhone, iPod and laptops, could require no outward changes in design to add solar power.

Wow, this is certainly a ver well put together thread here, I haven't been on much but I honestly congratulate the OP for such informative thread and the task of piecing together the info we had.
Edit - As for the thickness of the new iPhone, I have to see it first, if I see it's new thickness will be bulky [the current one is phenomenal and quite sleek] I think I'll rethink twice on buying the thing out. I don't mind having the current thickness, I hate putting something to my ear that talks and is as thick as my credit card, however I have a certain dislike for something a little bulkier than the current iPhone thickness. It's just perfect as it is right now. *Awaits AT&T play phone to check it out*
As for color, most definitely I'd say black. However, I am still awaiting on the final release, it will be interesting to say the least,
spaceman81

The new iPhone will be slightly slimmer and it's glossy black. The screen might be slightly wider. I can't be totally sure about this although I've seen it. Also, as speculated, it has 3G and GPS.

you have good taste al, stereo speakers arnt really important to me but the rest sounds like a great addtion to the iphone, zoom and color alterations would be addtions as well to the camera, maybe bulit in flash if it dosnt compermise the thickness of the phone itself lets not forget video recodreing bulit in alreday;)..........
i love my little expensive headphones, i love listening to music on those little (but iphone priced) things, theres no point in a decent music player without good headphones, same goes for the nasty speaker in the iphone, really nasty

You make the speakers sound like a public bathroom or how Britney Spears career went after she shaved her head, anyways yea, I can barely hear the speakers when the phone is in my pocket. Even if they don't fix the speaker give it a better cam with flash or better yet if nothing eles gets added cept gps and 3g give us flash in safari....

MacRumors has heard some unconfirmed whispers about the 3G capable iPhone due at next week's WWDC. Besides 3G support, the following features/specs were also passed along, mostly consistent with circulating rumors:
- Lighter weight
- Black + other colors
- Focus on Multimedia with Video recording
- Video Conferencing
- GPS
- 16GB $499
- 32GB $699
As with all pre-release specs, confirmation can be difficult and intentional misinformation may be common, so we provide it for interest alone. If released exactly as described, this would eliminate the $399 8GB iPhone, keep the $499 16GB and add a $699 32GB model. This, however, does not necessarily preclude the possibility of a low end iPhone suggested by Kevin Rose in an rumor earlier today.

Wouldn't mind 22% thinner, but Apple is known to throw into the 'Rumor Mill' misleading rumors to confuse us.
So, many rumors are for a thicker version, now this one comes up from a developer close to Apple. Confusing huh? Who to believe?
I'd say lets wait.

through all this and less than a week untill we actually see the device in my opinion from the rumors and multiple sources i think the phone will be a single material all over(glossy black presumably,) slighlty thinner, and have a tapered back but who knos

Ah, nice & logical statement and very true. I love how you used reverse psychology.
Well, in a sense I also feel that way, thats why I also doubt the thicker version as much as the thinner one. I mean, if its stays as it is I'll be glad and if it is thinner, well, I wouldn't mind also. But like you said, who knows.....:D
[Mental Note] * I hate the thicker idea * [/Mental Note]

"Apple News | 3G iPhone Firmware Leaked?
Saturday, 7th June 2008, 10:06 am
The iPhone 3G software has been released and has been dissected to reveal hardware information, according to an Engadget report.
"In combing through the raw data, we think we got more than enough information on the low-level hardware and drivers that run the device to make some informed conclusions about what we can expect: quad-band GSM support (as we currently have), A-GPS, and tri-band UMTS / HSDPA -- which would make the new iPhone(s) 3G-capable in just about every market in the world. Hardware details after the break. We're through the looking-glass, people!"
Full details:
* Infineon PMB6952 / S-GOLD3 six-band UMTS / HSDPA transceiver (as we'd heard)
* Murata LMRX3JCA-479 tri-band amplifier (we're assuming for the 3G)
* Sony SP9T antenna switch for GSM / UMTS dual mode
* ARM 1176JZF-S - Main CPU (same as in 1st gen iPhone)
* Skyworks 77427 chip - UMTS / HSDPA tx 1900MHz, rx 2100MHz
* Skyworks 77414 chip - UMTS / HSDPA 1900MHz
* Skyworks 77413 chip - UMTS / HSDPA 850MHz
* Internal build model number: n82ap (1st gen iPhone was model m68ap)
* UMTS Power Saving option - on or off
* Hooks for Global Locate Library (GLL), software that handles A-GPS related commands for the host processor"

if the above pics are real there is a second cam on the iPhone 3G and the case of the black one seems to match the ones posted some where on this thread and the red one is also of the same shape
i have a strong feeling that the black one is the one we are waiting for :D

the red one all the way to the right doesn't have a hold button and on the two models on the left facing the side the area between the volume buttons and vibrate are diffrent beetween the two devices. Hard to see in this picture but otheres are better quality..
This is obviously fake however I'm not to say its not a photoshop representation of the real thing, then again if it is fake witch one of these fake photo leaks are gonna look more ridiculous on Monday?

Alleged iPhone 3G hands-on from a Vodafone employee
Posted 6 June 2008 @ 10pm in News
advertisement
An employee with Vodafone has provided iPhone Atlas with what is allegedly a hands-on report with the second-generation, 3G iPhone, yielding the following observations:
* The back is gloss black.
* The 4 models we have have a black skin wrapped around the back and glued into place. This is how they came from Apple.
* All are running v2.0 of the firmware.
* The bootloader hardware exploit is now fixed.
* The phone is running V 04.41.01 modem software.
* The phone is locked down like no phone has ever been. At this stage, you can’t jailbreak it and you can’t hardware unlock it.
* There is an added icon for contacts. This allows you to go straight to your contacts without having to hit the Phone icon first.
* The GPS works very well. It will attempt to obtain your position via WiFi first, cell tower second, then satellite third. The accuracy appears to be within 3 meters.
* We were getting a data transfer of 140kbps on average. It droped down to 70 kbps when we went inside.
* Apart from that, the “feel” is much the same. The phone is smaller (I would say 20 percent) and it is noticable when you pick the unit up.

Apple News | American iPhone to be Subsidized?
Monday, 9th June 2008, 10:06 am
USA Today has provided some additional confirmation to the rumors that the next generation iPhone will be subsidized.
"The price also will rock: $199, according to people with knowledge of the matter, down from the current $399 and $499. Sources declined to be cited by name or affiliation because Apple and AT&T haven't authorized anybody to speak publicly about pricing until after Monday's announcement. The $199 price is being subsidized, though USA TODAY could not confirm details."
