View Full Version : iPhone SIM-locked again after software restore!

Despite everything i was thinking - and writing in this forum - the unthinkable happened today: When i tried to upgrade my unlocked iPhone from 1.0.0 to 1.0.2, something went wrong. After starting the upgrade, iTunes showed an error message claiming that the upgrade failed with error -1. iTunes left me the only choice to restore the phone, what i did. After the restore, the phone was SIM-locked again. I'm not sure what was causing the re-locking of the phone - but if you want to upgrade your phone to a new software version - BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL!

Hi Sergei,
From version 1.0.0 to 1.0.1 there was an update on the Baseband firmware.
So iTunes automatically rewrites the BB. I think that was your problem.

I know. But as far as i know a phone unlocked with iPhone-software 1.0 (bb-fw 03.12.06_G) should be upgradable to software 1.0.2 (bb-fw 03.14.08_G). At least there are a couple of people in this forum claiming that they were able to successfully upgrade the phone and keep it unlocked.

Im pretty sure they were only saying that for upgrading from .01 to .02, not from .00 to .02.

Yeah, what brasuco and SebSter85 said. 1.0->1.01 had a baseband change in the patch. 1.01->1.02 had no updated baseband in the patch.

Just out of curiosity, which method of unlocking did you do?

I was using Geohot's unlocking method. As far as i understood is the unlocking done with the official unlock AT-command - the patch bypasses the validation of the unlock code. My understanding is that once the locks are removed, they remain removed during an *update*. A restore resets the phone to the factory defaults, before the software is re-installed. This seems to turn the locks on again. May be i'm wrong. But nevertheless, i probably have to open the phone a second time (sigh). But this time i will try the needles - as the soldering was a real pain in the ass;)

..i did the same last night, from 1.01 to 1.02, had to jailbreak, ssh, winscp and repeat the whole steps again, worth it though, i'm using supersim, before the update, i get ocassional no service warning but after the upgrade, looks pretty much stable for me...who knows..

@Sergeij2000: the lock will remain through an "update" as long as the patch doesn't update the baseband code, since that is where you applied your unlock hack. So, for example, if Apple releases 1.0.3, and that contains updated baseband code, you'll probably get locked again (assuming you apply the patch).

The likelihood is 0-100% ;) Seriously, there's no way to know that. However, from what I have read, they could fairly easily disable it if they wanted.

So, if I am reading this correctly, 1.0 to 1.0.1 updates the BB firmware that Geohot teaches us to write with 00000000... in a cetain section of the firmware. This means the BB Firmware can be written to without the firmware solder/switch tehnique used by Geohot. So do you guys think that the software unlock is a hacked BB Firmware update that writes 00000000 in the correct section of the BB firmware that Geohot talks about in his blog?
I am willing to bet that if we can patch the BB firmware update, which if I understand is suppose to be rolled into the full restore of 1.0.2 since you can go from 1.0 -> 1.0.2, with the correct info and then perform the update we will have a software unlock program. Regardless the key to a software unlock has to be in the update firmware release from Apple.
Now, in the future do you guys think Apple will unlock the iphones by writing a firmware update like this, or do you think that there is a code to input in the phone just like Nokia phones? You know, the *pw+BLABLABLA thing?

If you have updated to 1.1.1, then you're done. There is no way (in the moment) to unbrick your phone.

Why not use a software solution like anySIM? Or have a look at iphone.unlock.no - no need to do the hardware hack again ...

Did you look at the date of my posting? That was long before anySIM or other SW unlocks were available;)
