Okay so I am on an AT&T iPhone plan. What exactly do I check on the IPSW Builder?

Let me just clarify all I want is my phone to be jailbroken and it to add Installer.app?

Then another question I had was after you "Pwn" the iPhone once, is it pretty much permenently Jailbroken? Like for example the next time we upgrade (when 2.0 officially comes for me at least) will we be able to save all our settings and Jailbroken unofficial apps? Or will we have to completly reinstall all off our 3rd party unofficial apps again?

Is there a way to keep them now?

Leave everything unchecked. Worked for me.

If you update to 2.0, you will lose your apps.

'Everything unchecked'? I thought you had to check 'Activate phone' to jailbreak only.

Activate phone is to bypass iTunes Activation, not for jailbreaking.

Normally yes, but with pwnage activating also jailbreaks (allows to read/write root filesystem). There is only one option.

So even if we use AT&T do we have to do the activate to get it jailbroken or can we just uncheck everything and have it work?

I want to go to 2.0 for exchange at work so is there anything else that I have to do when I upgrade or will it not work since I use AT&T?

You will have to put up with a buggy prerelease version of firmware that will stop working when Apple release the next beat version. Wait for the offical non-beta firmware to come out and save yourself some headaches.

What are the pros and cons of bypassing iTunes Activation for legit ATT customers?

I'm a legit AT&T customer... I checked most of the options and the phone still works just fine on AT&T?

Which options did you check?

Enable baseband updater
Neuter bootloader
Unlock baseband
Activate phone

All of the above?
(Upgrade or downgrade baseband and custom pictures are probably not relevant here)

Thanks for any info you can provide

the only options you want checked is the last one: especially uncheck the auto activate one as well. Having activation checked messes up things with a legit phone...

Thanks. So, if you uncheck the activate option, do you have to re-activate your phone through iTunes or does it keep its previous ATT activation status?

how.
how does activating and unlocking affect you just because you have a "legit" att account?

(BTW i too have an iphone account with ATT and checked everything but the BL upgrade/downograde options and my phone works fine (since an activated and unlocked iphone works with EVERY active sim card in the world) so i KNOW you're wrong..... i'm just curious as to how you arrived to your conclusion?.....)

I believe he is talking about if you didn't check the unlock box. Some people just want to Jailbreak the phone and not unlock it for other SIM cards. I mean if you're a legit AT&T customoer like me why would I want or need to unlock my phone? I'm sure there are others out there just like me.

So from what I understand all you have to do to just Jailbreak and have it install Installer.app is uncheck all of the boxes (or if you want check for the custom images).

I don't think you have to check "Activate" since iTunes will activate the phone since it is an already known as a legit phone.

Right?

I just Pwned my iphone last night and I changed the custom graphics by downloading the rainbow apple and dropping it in pwnage tool's file contents. I deselected everything except custom images.

If you are legit at&t customer just let iTunes activate your phone, it will not ask to setup a new account it will just activate it with your information.

Pwnage works great and installer is automatically installed.

Yes leave EVERYTHING unchecked to jailbreak only. Unless you want the custom graphics, then check that.

Just a little update

I just Pwned my phone, and I left all the boxes unchecked for my custom IPSW and it worked perfectly.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out

Now hopefully someday we can start using UPGRADE instead of restore.

So, at the end of the process, you did not have to activate through iTunes, correct? You had your phone working with its number, and visual voicemail and everything else, correct? What did you do then? Did you simply sync your accounts, contacts, bookmarks, videos, songs, photos through iTunes or did you copy your last iPhone backup from iTunes, so that also all your settings were re-installed?
Thanks

yup. Its like if you had just restored your phone. iTunes will ask if you want to use a copy of whatever backup you have on your comp. you just click yeah and let itunes do the rest. All your last synced settings, SMS convos, wifi settings, and whatnot are transfered back to your phone.
i'm not really sure what "compuguy1088" and a few others are talking about? i know going to 1.2 you have to have a legit account... but as far as 1.1.4 and below.... activation is activation. wether you do it through itunes, zip, liberty, or pwnage....
And for those "I have AT&T so I dont want to unlock just JB" folks out there: why? Its not like you gotta do extra work or anything? Just go all out. Why not? go nuts.....
if you really just want to JB so you can just put your "strawberry shortcake" theme on your iphone then you're just as well sticking to iLiberty..... hell even ziphone can manage this feat without screwing up........

I tried various modded firmwares with 'activation' and/or having 'unlock baseband' checked and I never got a signal on the result. So, it doesn't always work completely. YMMV is key here.

Thanks. This is really great news. I have many settings for different wifi networks and VPNs, I'd hate to start all over again. And even though I have only jailbroke so far, I agree with you, why not unlocking? Especially now with Pwnage, there is no point in not doing it. In my pre-iPhone life, I used to swap my american Sim card with european ones on my old Razr every time I would go to Europe. It won't be as simple as that with the iPhone, but it should be doable.

yeah, dude. But you're just part of a few isolated cases. Its not like the "anysim bricked my phone" epedemic of 2007. For some people just adding summerboard or whatnot will screw with their phones. In general and for the sake of this thread, unlocking the iPhone with pwnage should work like a charm. Regardless of who you have an "official" contract with, and you dont have to do anything other than wait a few extra seconds....

How reliable is PWNAGE for unlocking? I've PWNed many phones, but always have been using AT&T.

Now I need to unlock two new iPhones for use on a GSM carrier in Israel.

With no SIM cards in hand (I'm in USA), should I use PWNAGE 1.1 & leave UNLOCK BASEBAND & ACTIVATE both checked? Should that do it?

Everything set to on exept for "Update Booloader" and you are good to go. Just follow the Sticky.
So the answer is yes.

I confirm. Done it as volkspost says as a legi AT&T user. Had no problems whatsoever.
