View Full Version : [WARNING][SOLVED] Bricked my iPhone with PWNED iPod touch firmware

guru_ck

So someone in the Mac Rumors forums linked to 1.1.4 firmware for the iPod. I downloaded it to use with iPwnage thinking that it was for the iPhone. I flashed and now my iPhone is dead (the screen never turns on). If I hold down the Home button and connect to my mac iTunes pops up and sees it as an iPod Touch. If I try to restore the correct file iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore it fails "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (5)."

Can I do anything to bring my iPhone back to life?

Shouldnt this be posted in the Pwned subforum?

Does it say the iPod "iPod" could not be restored before or after attempting to restore?
I had a similar issue but without the iPod Touch firmware thing. Hmmm... You should try putting it in DFU mode then restoring.

Thumbs up if this helps :D

I have tried:

iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw
iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw
iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw

The message appears after trying to restore.

Ok, after restoring to 1.1.4 use ZiPhone to reboot the iPhone into regular mode. Then see what happens. It often says that when downgrading your firmware. Like in the old 1.1.2 jailbreak, when you downgraded to 1.1.1 it said there was an error after restoring, you just reboot regularly and it works. When you did the restore did it go through all the steps? Extracting firmware, preparing iphone, restoring software, restoring firmware, etc?

It only goes through extracting software...

Just be sure your putting it in DFU mode and not normal restore mode. Hold down power + home for 10 seconds then (without letting go of the home button) just home for 10 seconds. That should, in theory, work.

Of course, with PWNED, it's not just the bad safeguards that we're bypassing. We also lose the checks that stop stupid things like this from happening (no offense :D). It is, unfortunately, very possible that your phone is bricked. If you can connect with ziphone, try a nvram reset.

Hey, crazy idea, but have you tried restoring with stock ipod touch software? :)

even in dfu mode???

DJ McG
04-04-2008, 01:36 AM
Put it in DFU mode by:

Connecting your iPhone (Powered on) to your computer
Turn the iPhone off
hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds EXACTLY
after ten seconds release the power button and keep holding down the home button and you should hear the device recognized noise or iTunes should say device recognized

Then try restoring.

More details here: http://www.appledailytimes.com/downloads/iStudy.pdf

If it doesnt see it in DFU mode then I dont know what to tell you...

But if it doesnt see it and it is in DFU mode then you should be safe to take it back to Apple, they wont be able to tell you messed with it unless they have something special or you didnt try everything. But if they cant help they will give you a new one if you have a warranty.

guru_ck

even in dfu mode???

I'm not able to get it into DFU mode:

1) Hold down Power + Home button for 20 seconds
2) Release Power button while holding down Home button
3) Connect USB cable
4) Check iTunes

Result = Nothing

Remember that my iPhone has not turned on since I used the Pwnage tool with the iPod Touch firmware.

Dude, try something it should work.
When you bricked your phone you used an iPod CUSTOM right? You pwned the ipsw right?
So instead of trying to restore your iPhone TOUCH eheh to a regular firmware, do the same procidure but with a 1.1.4 iPhone Firmware. In other words, PWN your 1.1.4IPHONEEE firmware and try to restore with it. It should work.

You know that restore mode is different from DFU mode right?
And another thing, you held for 20seconds both buttoms, you just need to hold for 10 seconds, then you release the power buttom and keep pressing home.

Thanks everyone for trying to help.

Right now I think I need to figure out how to get iTunes to see it before anything else. I can't get into Restore or DFU mode. Is there any tool that would be able to see the phone when iTunes wouldn't?

thecompkid
04-04-2008, 02:29 AM
Using iTouch firmware can screw up a lot, obviously, but there is absolutely no reason why DFU mode should not work. Double and triple check that you're doing it right.

I'm renaming and sticking this thread, as of right now, this could be a hidden danger.

)law(
04-04-2008, 02:32 AM
beat me too the sticky lol anyways maybe if we can get it to a certian point we could erase the basband and try a dfu restore, no?

guru_ck
04-04-2008, 02:44 AM
Hooked it up to my PC instead of my Mac and was able to get it into DFU mode. Tried the restore again in iTunes but still having the same problem:

"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)."

At least the PC is seeing it as an iPhone and not a iPod Touch.

guru_ck
04-04-2008, 02:48 AM
I have an old version of iTunes on my PC and it's downloading 1.0.2 right now (I think that is what my iPhone orignally shipped with when I bought it on launch day). My iPhone screen is white right now! This looks promising. Will let you know if the restore works.

Spinstorm
04-04-2008, 02:51 AM
Keep trying to pwn it with the iPhone firmware. It can't hurt.

Also you could try going up to 2.0 beta.

Possibly that may help you - like previous firmware upgrades unbricked phones bricked with older firmware.

Failing everything - and someone may have a solution - I am sure someone on the DevTeam will have an idea (of course it may not help but anyway) if it really won't turn on you could try returning it to Apple and seeing if they will replace it.

guru_ck
04-04-2008, 03:11 AM
Well the 1.0.2 restore failed with iTunes on my PC, this time the error was 1. I downloaded ZiPhone and it just says "Searching for iPhone" when I try to do anything.

My phone seems to be in a better state though... I can turn it on and the screen becomes solid white, lol.

My Mac sees it as a iPhone now too, cool.

Nevermind it's fucking fixed!!! HORAY!

I clicked the restore button again in iTunes on my Mac and it's successfully restoring as I type. It's loading the factory firmware from Apple. My iPhone screen is back, that Apple logo has never looked so beautiful.

Now it's time to correctly use the Pwnage tool with the iPhone firmware not the iPod firmware, wish me luck lol.

I really don't know what fixed it guys as I tried most of these steps already but I guess it just took some tinkering.

I'm so happy!

Plugged into my PC and the screen went white, plugged into my Mac and clicked the restore button (no option key) so it used the stock firmware from the Apple server. That fixed it. Pwned added Installer.app for me.

DFU Mode will always save the day on the main app CPU (the CPU that interacts with iTunes). It's not always obvious when you're actually in DFU mode (the white screen is one tell-tale sign but you don't always get a white screen).

Quick question, but how quickly is the iphone supposed to reboot after pwnage.

thecompkid
04-04-2008, 04:05 AM
PWNED won't add installer if it isn't supported on that FW, so you must be pwning a 1.2 or 2.0 ipsw, or at least it thinks you are. It's going to be a while until 2.0 gets all the apps. Just like what happened with 1.1.1, all the frameworks changed.

No probably not. If you could fill in details of your iPhone's history that would help. With that particular error message though you should be able to do a DFU restore to firmware 1.1.1 (make sure it's specifically 1.1.1). You'll end up with 3.8BL temporarily until you re-run PwnageTool and BootNeuter.

Ok, so my friend did the ipod firmware on iphone and he couldnt get it to turn the phone on.

I have managed to atleast get into DFU mode and the iTunes now recognizes it as an iPhone.

I do restore and tried from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 all firmwares. It goes to the stage where iPhone goes to white screen then the Apple logo comes up then the wheel starts spinning underneath - but then iTunes fails and gives an error. Like (9) or (5).

I have also tried a Mac still no go.

Any ideas?

Edit: SOLVED thanks to guru_ck for his posts.

Step by step instructions on how I restored the iPhone from the state where it had been restored with iPod Firmware

1. Uninstall current iTunes and download iTunes 7.5 and install it.
2. Put your iPhone in DFU mode. I know its all black screen and all but hold the sleep and the home button down for 10seconds while the cable is plugged in to the PC and let go off the sleep button only after 10seconds....in the next few seconds iTunes should detect your iPhone in recovery mode.
3. Press Shift + Restore and select 1.0.2 Firmware first...it will do its thing and give you an error of 1013 or 1015 (which is good)
4. Then Press Shift + Restore and select 1.1.4 Firmware

And walla you have it. Unlock/activate/jb using any method. :)

mitchellmoxo +100 acctually I TRIED to PWN it with iTouch, just for fun....

Thats what i did,i made a custom 1.2firmware,tried restore to it with the LATEST Itunes, but it gave an unknown error(-10),then i disconected it and connected it to the cable and it put itself into the DFU mode, and the screen went white,so i made 2(JUST 2) restores to 1.1.4 and it WORKED!
So heres the solution....

I got the same problem , solved by putting the phone in DFU
not easy because of the black screen
Be carefull, because once the phone is pwned , itunes can install any file
even a word or a pdf, if u build it as an ipsw and the result could be a drama

I did this on a Windows XP PC with iTunes 7.5 which i got from Filehippo

1. Connect iPod to computer
2. Open up iTunes if not already
3. Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
4. When the "iPhone" leaves the menu, let go of the power button and keep home button clicked.
5. The "iPhone" will then turn into an iPod, showing some yellow boxes in the bottom right corner saying ....(DFU) iPod gibberish like that
6. Now click shift + restore and restore to 1.1.4
7. Be happy and dance to a song...I thought i was screwed out of my mind

I now face a similar problem with my 16gb Iphone!

I updated the phone with an ipod 1.1.4 firmware using winpwn.
Now the phone looks dead and wont switch on even trying to put it in DFU .

Have you any Idea of what I could do ?

I tried Ziphone or iBrickr but they dont detect the phone .

Please anybody I need Help I 'm quite desperate right now !

don't even go near ziphone.
you need to put the phone in DFU mode. Make sure you know how to do this. Many people said "i put it in DFU" but it turned out that they are not in DFU mode.
Your phone had been pwned with winpwn so it's tricky to get it in DFU mode because you are not going to see the anything (like boot logo and such).
if you cannot put it in DFU manually, try using iLiberty+. There is option in iLiberty+ to put phone in DFU.

you cannot turn on the phone?

Turn it on
connect to computer
launch itunes and ignore any messages
put phone in dfu mode manually and hopefully itunes will detect and let you restore to 1.1.4

DFU:
- hold power + home
- in a few sec, red slider appears, continue holding til phone reboot
- count 1-6
- let go power
- keep holding home until itunes detect it or if you hear a connection tone (like plugging in a usb device), let go of home.

If itunes say it need to check for ...., let it check, hopefully you will see the restore button on itunes. shift-click restore and select the right 1.1.4 FW

Great !!! . I'm glad that worked out for you. Just remember the step to put phone in DFU (it takes some practices) but once you know how, it's easy.

Just went though the same painstaking process, DFU and itunes recovery finally worked when i changed USB ports. dunno why, but give it a shot.
