it seems a lot of people like it, so i set up a page on my wiki for those who would like to use it instead of the pineapple.
http://chronic-dev.org/pwnage:retroapple
I just added a .zip on the end, and then dropped the file in
(and afterwards remove the .zip extension of course!)

would you mind tell us what format these img2 files are? also don't mean to be a bother but wondering if ipswtool is on track for a today release?
thanks!

This is what you do.
iPSWTool is ready, program wise, but we have not done much for the GUI since this has been done via command-line for testing purposes. Once we get a nice, easy to use GUI fixed up we will be able to get you something tomorrow.

Mac initially, but after we get that stabilized we will work on porting it and hopefully get it out soon after the Mac release

Thanks for the great info.

this doesn't make sense. How are you supposed to just drag the file on top of the ipsw package? can you explain properly how to do this please?

1) If you haven't done this already, go to the Finder preferences, and under advanced, put a checkmark on "Show all file extensions".
2) Add ".zip" at the end of the custom firmware filename.
3) Take the applelogo.img2 and drag it on the custom firmware.
4) Remove the ".zip" from the custom firmware filename.
5) Restore using the custom firmware via iTunes.
I believe that's what you're supposed to do. The part that I get stuck on is at #3. The image file doesn't want to be added to the zip. Any ideas?

i think that you are suppose to add .zip to the img2 file, and drop that in and then remove the .zip from the img2 file. I haven't done this yet, but that is how i understand the instuctions.

If anyone wants to save themselves the hassle, just right (control) click on Pwnage Tool.app and choose "show package contents". Navigate to the resources folder and find the folder for the software version you are going to customize. Replace the "logo.img2" file there with the retro apple one and you'll be good to roll :)
Note: You can also add files to be included in the ipsw when it is built here :-)

I found a somewhat more complicated, but confirmed solution:
1) find your PwnageTool.app
2) right click and click "Show package contents"
3) navigate to Contents/Resources/*firmware version you're going to use*
4) rename the retro apple logo from "applelogo.img2" to "logo.img2"
5) overwrite logo.img2 with the retro apple logo file (backup the original file if you want to)
6) now create your custom firmware and make sure you check "Use DevTeam custom pictures"
EDIT: Someone beat me to the punch.

What about if I dont want to use other images and just want the default iphone images to be used? Is there a way to do that?
Update: Nevermind, I found out how to do it. There's an option on the pwnage tool to enable the new images or not.

There is an option in PWNED not to use the Devs custom images (leave Apples)

Not so easy for now anyways... maybe future versions of pwnage will let us add our own images. The .img2 format is the encrypted 8900 container format

Ya, after I .zip it, then take it off it does not show as an mpeg, but when I put it in the firmware, and pwn, just the regular silver apple shows up now... The pineapple showed up while it was running pwn... confused..
Edit..didnt select custom images..

or after putting it in the firmware folder, simply run ipwner on your pwned iphone again.
So you dont have to restore and lose everything :)

or can i Just get that ipsw tool builder please?
you know installer should make something like this for like a mac or windows program. that way you can actually open up the program and have your iphone/ipod plugged in and click the programs you want and have it update on the iphone like the ipsw builder!

because let's face it. a lot of the things i installer are actually fixes/customizations that arent apps

Can you really do this? I having a hard time getting the rainbow apple to show up. I PWNed and did not select the show custom images or whatever. I then restored to apple, and PWNed again, selecting that option, but then when I went to restore to the new firmware that the PWN created it would not let me... got errors. The only restore PWN I can do is to the first one i created... Is this normal? What do I have to do to set up a new PWN ipsw? I have unlocked several iPhones and have never had issues. I know this is a minor one, but I would like to figure it out! Thanks!

Are you really sure about this? Ctrl Click on the file and check the Info. It maybe a case that your Mac simply thinks quicktime (hence showing the mpeg icon) is the best app to open the file with.
The simplest way is still to replace the icon.img2 file with the apple one. Rebuild the custom firmware file for your version using ipsw builder and restore that to your phone. Job done.

yes, I did that earlier to compare with the original pineapple file, and it says mpeg in the info...
What is the whole point of adding the .zip?

When I rebuild, the new custom FW will not restore. I get an error in iTunes. The only restore I can use is the original custom I created. I have created 3 newer ones, and they will not restore...

Can someone explain to me why adding the multicolour apple logo to the appropriate firmware "list" in the pwnage tool causes the logo to change when I select the original apple firmware to initially pwn it!?
I don't get that...
I also see the iPhone 1.2 beta listed (in the resources folder) when I don't have that!? IT seems that all the supported firmware versions are listed with patches to apply
when the IPSW is being pwned.

Having added the retro apple logo to my iPod and compared it with the pineapple I prefer the pineapple!
The retro apple is blurred and pixelated whilst the pineapple looks sharp and clear!
And I want my screen to look good when it boots - not like someone stuck a blurred picture on it!
I have no doubt that the logo would have been finished better had it been in the final release but it wasn't so for now pineapple looks better to me!

i dont suppose anyone from the dev team could explain to us how they created the pinapple im2 file and the retro apple img2 file. Because they created these ones somehow so that means there is a way, and im not bothered how complicated it is, i'll still give it a go. Then once we know the more technically minded could create these images for the noobs, so we can all use our custom images.

So, why people do not want to share the how to do ???? It is interesting for more than one of us.... Why wait the ipswtool for this ???
Some poeple know how to do this...
What is the aim of a forum, help and share, no ?
Then share it.....
Will ipswtools give you the possibility to choice between a predefined set of images or it will really give us the possibility to encode our own images ???

Thanks
When I got mine, it downloaded and shows as a quicktime file, saying mpeg across the bottom of the icon. however its name ends in .img2. I simple left it the way it is, renamed it to logo.img2 and replaced the one inside of PwnageTool.app contents and I've got my retro apple now. Not sure why it is being recognized as a quicktime file, but it still works for me.

That is actually the recoverymode.img2
The boot up img2's size must be less than or equal to the original img2, so it would be too big to be a boot up but it is smaller than the itunes restore logo

yeah i think chronic is referring to using the pwned logo. It can't be used as the boot up screen, but could be used (obviously) as the restore screen.

well nothing really. I duplicated the recovery.img2 in the contents of PwnageTool, and named it to logo.img2 (in the 114 folder of course). Then I tried just pwning again so it would apply the images, but every time it says something to the effect of, "failed to start pwning". I then built a custom .ipsw, and restored to that, and it actually kept the rainbow apple boot screen surprisingly.
