I get the error:

when trying to update 1.1.2 to custom 1.1.4 in the latest iTunes after using Pwnage tool.

You must "Restore" no "update"

and.. your phone should be in restore mode... not DFU mode..

Hi according spinstorm (check his post http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36558 ) you get that message when iTunes doesn't like your usb port, so the easiest way to fix it is to use another usb port.
Best regards,
BTW ... I wouldn't mind if you want to give a positive rep :) ... off course, if you found my reponse helpful at all.

Thank you all!
I was in a little bit hurry when I wrote my first post.
I used Restore in "Restore mode" and get that error.
Also tried different USB ports.
I read this post now.

Have I understand it correctly. Canīt you use Pwnage tool on a OTB 1.1.2 jailbreaked, unlocked etc. Is it only 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 versions?
If this is true? Is it now safe to restore and update the iPhone with Apples original files in iTunes? And then using Pwnage tool.

Be sure to 'Pwn' your phone with the iPwner option BEFORE trying to use the custom firmware! I made that mistake :)

This is how I got it to work. With your help of cource:)
I started with 1.1.2 OTB unlocked etc. using Bladox TurboSim. Since Pwnage Tool only work with 1.1.3/1.1.4 I did a normal restore/update from iTunes to 1.1.4
Then I used ZIPhone to unlock/jailbreak/activate the iPhone
(You find a guide at iClarified - How to Unlock 1.1.2-1.1.4 iPhones with ZiPhone 2.5 GUI)
Then there was no problem upgrading the phone using Pwnage Tool
Thank you all:)

why did you use ZiPhone after upgrading/restoring to 1.1.4 before pwning the thing?
is this step necessary?

No it is not neccessary and extremely stupid as he could have broken his phone.
Pwnage ONLY works on 1.1.4.
You have to pwn the phone FIRST so it has the pinepapple logo.
Then you can restore using the custom IPSW. Sometimes you have to put the phone into recovery mode first before the restore works.
If your still getting 1603/4 errors then try a different USB port/computer.
ZiPhone was totally unecessary and defeated the point of using pwnage - which is to use a safe fully reversible unlock method on your phone - and although pwnage can reverse ZiPhone now its definately not safe!

I was getting the same error for ages. I had just restored to a stock 1.1.4 and didn't know why I couldn't restore back to pwned. Turns out that I forgot to iPwn my phone :p
