Screw it. I just order a tool opene er thing from ifixit. I hope this $hit works and doesn't damage the case. Does any have experience with these tools?

I'm in the same boat, this thing is a bitch to open, and as far as I am concerned the ifixit thing sucks. Anyone find a better tutorial?

Heh...I broke an iPod opener tool trying to pop the latches on the metal part of the case...after that, I figured it just wasn't meant to be and closed it back up. :)
the ifixit description for removing the black plastic part is bullsh*t! lifting the cover is the wrong way - you have to slide it off to the bottom of the phone.
on hacktheiphone.com there was a good description (unfortunately the site seems to be offline). he put a knife in the gap between the aluminium back cover and the black plastic cover and slided it down. you can support this process by putting a guitar pick between black cover and docking port. hope hacktheiphone will be online again soon!
btw: are there replacement parts available for the black cover? mine got scratched a bit :(
and I'm living in Germany - so it's a bit expensive to order from US ... thanks!

OK the bloody tool isnt arrived yet so I opened the antenna black cover with a guitar spike os .67 mm the first time I spend like 40 mins, the second time like 10 seconds :D just inserted in the spike between the black case and the hole of the dock (not in the dock)
After that I use two small screwdrivers (those for the electronics and clocks) and with a lot of patience I was able to open it witout a scratch :D

Use a swiss army knife's tin can opener. It works perfectly to get the silver cover off. Just slide it in with the top side of the tool (the 15mm clean side of it) facing to the side of the phone. If you do it right no marks will be visible on the case!

getting the silver case off costs me a lot of guitar picks and pints of my precious blood.

Yeah, I have bloody fingers too! All I can say is take your time, I messed up a couple of the iPhones and had to get replacement backs for them.
Some iPhones are harder than others too, I had one with a series 5 screen and literally got everything off with a bobby pin in under 10 mins without a single scratch! It was done so well that later I replaced it at an apple store when I shorted it! eek!
