It works for me. Mail push, calendar sync and contacts are all fine. It's pretty buggy though and the apps crash regularly. I'm using a Zimbra server to sync with (yepp, it supports ActiveSync).
Concerning your problems, it seems like you need to have a valid SSL public key with a full chain of trust (not self-signed) in place for ActiveSync to work correctly with your exchange server.
My company tells me they only can setup blackberrys on there server. Does that mean I cant sync to my email using 2.0?
Tell them you got a blackberry and shall give you the details, than you can set it up on iPhone. I am pretty sure they not know there is a iphone fw with exchange support or they smoke crack.

self signed certificates do work... i can sync without problems.. one thing though.
I have a mailaccount with a dutch locale.. the iphone is in dutch also.
There is no option to redirect the inbox in the iphone to the real inbox on my mailserver.
So no push mail.
But there is no problem syncing, works a lot quicker than imap..

so it would appear the exchange issues people are having is because they do not have valid public ssl keys?

One thing you will notice .... once activesync is enabled, you will no longer be able to sync AddressBook and iCal via iTunes. There seems to be a bug that when you sync to iTunes, ActiveSync does not disengage ... not allowing iTunes to access the iPhone's calendar and contacts DB .... FYI.
And careful, it can get stuck in loops and drain your battery within a day ! VERY buggy . . .

I'd say don't go to 2.0 unless you really need exchange like I do. I was tired of carrying the iphone and the blackberry. The 2.0 firmware is a bit buggy (notably slower and apps tend to just crash occasionally). It's definitely useable but there are no native apps so what's the point unless you need active sync.

If you can connect over the web to web email then you can use activesync.
Just enter the web address you would normally enter to see your webmail like https://webmail.xxxxx.com and then enter your username and password which is the same you use to log into outlook and it should work.

Do you need to install the certificate on the iphone for self signed certificates to work? I remember when I had a WM5 device I needed to install the certificate for activesync to work.

I got exchange working great, just entered the server name mine is mail.domain.com, then username domain\username, then password. It works well although, it does not notify of new messages when they arrive, and the caledar entries are off a couple hours... Hopefully just bugs that will be worked out.

calender entries that are off a few hours; try this, go in date&time and check if your timezone is set correctly, if it is, try the slider above that one and set it to off, then put the right place in place and turn it back on, that should fix the time prob

Same issue with Exchange 2007 for me. Exchange 2003 works fine. I have a feeling that my issue with Exchange 2007 is the policy enforcement we have setup on the Exchange 2007 server.

Hi, Exchange did not work for me in the beginning, but wen I deactivated Mail/Calendar/Contacts one time, rebooted and activated them again, syncing worked after a few moments...
My problem is, that I connect to a German Exchange-Server which means that the foldernames on the server differ... Has anyone a hint for me where I can change the settings for the ActiveSync-Folders on my iPhone?

Perhaps someone can confirm this. I got Beta2.0 operating with Exchange server, I had it on only for 45 minutes. I used the land line phone and noticed ,cell phone interference on the line due to my iPhone. It was doing this for several minutes. I check my iPhone data usage and it said 18 Megabytes ?!!!
I had 6 kilobyte usage before exchange was turned on.
What the hell! What would there be so much data downloaded to my iPhone?
Can someone else conform if they are having very high data downloads with exchange mail, calendar and contacts enabled. I only had the mail set to sync the last week, which was only 20-30 emails .
Any ideas? I've turned active sync off so I don't get slammed with data usage charges.
Thanks
Kova
Ive tried using exchange with both beta's it it just never works for me. I think my company would need to install some kind of iPhone server like we have for all of the Blackberry's in our company.

If they have exchange then you shouldn't need an "iphone server", as it'll work. Sounds like you just have the settings wrong. As others have mentioned, it failed for me to setup because my mail is blah@domain.com but my mail server is a.b.domain.com. So i had to put my address as blah@a.b.domain.com which allowed the settings to update. After it worked I then changed everything back to how it should be.
The reason blackberry needs a special server is because it doesn't support exchange. wmobile and iphone (v2) devices all contain exchange clients.

does 2.0 (any beta) has to-do sync with outlook 2007 !
Im trying to get this to work for me to. My company is a major corporation so getting any help from my IT department isnt going to happen since they say they dont support the iPhone. MY company uses Exchange 2003 and to get to my email I have to first login to the server here in my office and then open outlook. Now if I look in out look under mail accounts I see Microsoft Exchange and if I click Modify i can see the server name xxxmailjax04.xxx.com and used cached exchange is checked and I see my full name listed in the user box. Do I use these settings and how should I enter them in my iphone under exchange? Im using Beta 3. My company has webmail also but to get to that we now have to login to a web hosted vpn just to get to the link for webmail and then after we click the link we have to enter our information that we use normally to login to our computer here in the office.

Im on Beta 3 fw, and have the following problems:
1) not all of my contact nor appointments are sync'ed. No appearent link between those sync'ed and those not.
2) receiving mail, but new contacts and calendar items are not sync'ed.
Does anyone know how to start a sync process? I know the mail.app will sync the mail, but how does contacts and calendar items get re-synced?
rich
On beta 3 (on exchange 2003 and 2007), the sync is very very sketchy. Sometimes instant mail, sometimes not at all. Sent messages don't arrive at their recipients, and calendar and contacts only sync if a contact or calendar appointment is first added from the iPhone, and then only for that sync (ie a further contact or calendar appointment needs to be added in order to achieve another sync).
So, although the fw is much more stable than prior betas, exchange implementation is actually worse than gmail IMAP on a short polling cycle for mail! If syncje was more reliable, and worked on a poll in the background, it would be much better than exchange.
This is pretty rubbish so far and nowhere near good enough to beat a dedicated BES account/blackberry at the present stage. Apple will have to come along leaps and bounds to go from this firmware to a reliable release in June.

Who is an expert in setting this up? I cannot figure out for the life of me the settings, and have tried everything. I could and would appreciate anyones step by step setup for their successful exchange connection.
Thanks in advance
Ok guys, Ive already confirmed that I can not connect to my company exchange server using the exchanges settings in the iPhone 2.0 Beta 2 or 3. My company has this locked down tight and it just wont work. Now I am able to connect to my company via Cisco VPN and I can go to my company intranet site and goto the webmail link and view my email on the website. What I want to know is if i can now connect to my company via VPN shouldnt I be able to connect to my exchange email now that im connected via VPN? and if so how should i set up exchange in he iphone?

If you have Exchange web email (Outlook Web Access) it should work as long as your mailbox has the permissions turned on. I am an Exchange 2003 admin and we keep Exchange ActiveSync turned off unless a user asks for it specifically. So it should work, it is able to work, but maybe your IT department is not letting in work. There can be reasons for this, such as networking resources, especially because the phone has to keep an open HTTPS channel.

Thank you,
I, and others I have spoken too, have noticed that it does not seem to do push very well over wifi, only edge. I think this is because the wifi goes to sleep when the phone is locked and it doesn't seem to reiniciate the https session until you check for mail again. I can watch all of this happening on my Exchange 2003 front end server. With EDGE it keeps the session open and reopens it when the session expires because of our session limit on the firewall.
For all those talking about battery life, this is an issue with all ActiveSync capable phones. If the session expires to frequently more data has to be sent by the handset to keep reopening the channel, thus draining the battery. Your Exchange admin would see an event in the eventvwr in Windows that would indicate this problem in many cases.
shane_pcs

that makes sense. I did notice better push performance using edge only.

All,
I'm having a problem connecting with the corporate exchange server. We use device password policies through MSFP (we require an alphanumeric password to lock the device after 2 minutes for security purposes) but I am not receiving the policy sent down to my iphone like I have with my windows mobile devices.
Is there something I am missing, either on the server side or on the iphone?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I found the solution for the Certificate Problem. in
private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DataAccess.plist
There's the key
DAAccountsKey/Item X/ASContextConfiguration/ASAccountAllowAnyRootCert
Set it to "true" and it works...

Hi, sorry, but I think, you should be familiar to edit plists when you want to try this out...
You need an sftp/scp client (e.g. Fugu) and an plist-Editor (e.g. Pref Setter), you can access your iPhone as root with password alpine. In Fugu, go to the mentioned folder and copy the com.apple.DataAccess.plist to your mac. Open it in Pref Setter and add a Key "ASAccountAllowAnyRootCert" with the boolean value "true" to your Setting. Save the file, upload it again to your iPhone and it should work...
