[Release] PwnageTool 1.0

The “DevTeam” would like to announce the release of the OS X version of the PwnageTool application.

The team (and especially Wizdaz) have been working hard to bring you this release in as short a time as possible.

The plan (4 weeks ago) was to release a Mac tool only. This was decided because of the lack of reliable Mac filesystem tools on Windows, and the fact that the task of porting them would be too time consuming.

With that in mind the genius that is “cmw” stepped up to the plate and offered his services to the DevTeam. He proposed to provide a tool that would give the same functionality and User Interface as the Mac tool.

cmw has done an almost unthinkable task and ported the almost complete Pwnage Tool to Windows in a little under a week, and we would like to thank him for this unbelievable work. He is currently in the final test stages and hopefully this should be finished within the next 24 hours (but even he needs sleep and family time occasionally!) We'll post a link as soon as the testing has finished.

The “DevTeam” would like to announce the release of the WiFi fix.

Gray and MuscleNerd have managed to fix the WiFi problems that many users have been having. Today MuscleNerd created a standalone tool.

The DevTeam method for fixing the WiFi problem does not use a static MAC address and therefore conforms to the IEEE 802 standards.

NB: The tool will be incorporated into PwnageTool/BootNeuter as soon as we get some sleep!

SWIFI is an example of a “fakeblanked serial payload”. It examines your wifi calibration tables and corrects them if necessary. It doesn't require a baseband erase and is very quick, but it requires you to be fakeblanked. The BootNeuter application (part of the pwnage release by the Dev Team) lets you quickly go back and forth between fakeblanked and normal.

When do I need this fix?

The tool fixes the grey wifi problem - when your phone can make and receive calls but wifi (and/or bluetooth) is grey. This happens when your baseband nvram gets corrupted for some reason (like some buggy unlocking programs).

You can check if your phone's baseband nvram is corrupted using ibooter. Connect to your phone, give the command radio readnvram and check if you see 3 mac addresses (wifi, bluetooth, ethernet), wifi calibration checksum and build tag. If you dont see one of the fields you should use the tool. If you see all the fields but are experiencing the grey wifi problem you probably have another issue and we dont advise you to use this tool.

CAUTION! This fixer should not be used unless you have the grey wifi problem described above!

Installation and usage

To run this utility, first become fakeblanked by using BootNeuter.

Download the archive swifi.zip. Then log into your iPhone via VT100 terminal application as root and run the “swifi” program (extracted from swifi.zip and chmoded +x as necessary). You won't need to unload your CommCenter. It should complete in less than 3 seconds.

Here's an example run, used on an iPhone whose tables I had previously intentionally corrupted:

From the help file :

Neuter bootloader - This will enable "Bootneutering" to the baseband firmware allowing custom firmware to be installed onto the iPhone baseband by convincing the iPhone that it is secure. Arbitrary secpacks and fls files will be accepted when the device is in this state. In order to use these features you will need to locate the two bootloader files. Please note, these files are not shipped with Pwnage Tool.

Under the BootNeuter checkbox will present two new options that are selectable these are -


Updrade to 4.6 NB: Unless you understand this option you should avoid it.
Downgrade to 3.9 NB: Unless you understand this option you should avoid it.]

- Yes, for now is only MAC version...

First you have to restore the phone using Itunes
Donwnload the restorarion file you want. 1.1.3 or 1.1.4
Then use the tool (MAC)
Then use Bootneuter on the phone

PS: Downgrading or upgrading the BL is not a joke, so please be careful.
-deactivate the sleep mode
- And let the phone work, it will take time. Don't interrupt

I can confirm :
1.1.4 OOB BL 4.6 : ZiPhone brought it down to 3.9 (non FB)
iPwner : no problem in creating custom ipsw-file
iBooter : could reflash BL to 4.6 and 4.6FB
worked like a charm : activated, jailbroken, installer there, no need to unlock ...

Now I'm running 2.0 and able to use it with XCode! That's great!

At first there were problems with creating custom ipsw. It failed ARS (ASR?) check all the time. Then I rebooted and from an 8th try it finally created ipsw.

I went from 1.1.4 (Zibri 2.something) to 2.0 with 04.04.05 bb. Everything seems to be OK.

I was so excited that I have tried to use "Browse .ipsw" on custom ipsw instead of using it with iTunes. It said it could not recognise version all the time.
May be you should detect your own custom firmwared and notify that it is already customized and should be used with iTunes :)
Just to make it fool-proof.

The goal, I would like to see, is to be able to have an unlocked and universally activated iphone. So we can travel and switch sims on the fly without having to have a computer nearby for activation.

This happens automatically on my mac also, i have no idea why. I simply right-click and choose compress folder. This becomes a zip file: and can be used with pwned.

Another way is to download the firmware on a pc, and transfer via cd/usb etc

I found another way to have the exact file as it appears in iClarified tutorial
I deleted the extension zip and left only ipsw ( it will ask if you want to keep the new extension name)
The file becomes identically to the extension you want. I have a Mac with Leopard.

If your Mac extracts the .ipsw file automatically like mine does, look for the .ipsw in the trash. It will be in there.

Here's a Good Question:

After restoring with custom firmware and BootNeuter finishes flashing and everything, I probably won't make changes to the bootloader and/or baseband. How can I delete the BootNeuter icon to avoid someone grabing my iphone and messing with it. Most people won't use BootNeuter after restoring the iPone so why keep it there.

Log in through ssh or Terminal.app and do

rm -rf /Applications/BootNeuter.app
killall -HUP SpringBoard

If you hit permission problems, you need to do this under the root account.

This will stop someone from being able to pick up your iPhone and change your settings, but it won't prevent malicious apps from being able to mess with your baseband and bootloader. For that you should (a) not let your apps run as user root; (b) refrain as much as possible from running dodgy apps.

actually when it extracts it and leaves it as a folder,compress it

then add the .ipsw

it will revert it back to the iphone ipsw that itunes can read.

You can avoiding automatic unzipping by changing your Safari prefs. Unclick 'Open safe files after downloading'

@MuscleNerd: Is there any easy way to get bootneuter back once you delete it with terminal?

Having said that I can't see any reason why anyone would want it back once the phone is working and a restore will always bring it back but I am curious if it is possible? did it delete all the files on the phone for BN alltogether?

Sure it can be brought back. I believe there are other threads about how to install it manually, including an Installer.app source for it. Those methods are beyond our purview though so we don't support them directly.
