Same here. When I hit the voicemail button on a hardware unlocked phone it does nothing. Also, when I get a voicemail, I dont receive the normal sms notification that I do on other phones. Any assistance appreciated!

Hmmm... I have Hardware unlocked my iPhone and my Voicemail button goes direct to the correct number for my provider.
I am on Orange in the UK.
I assume that the default VM number is stored on the sim card.
Try putting your sim in an old phone and try setting the VM number again.
Then re insert your sim into your iPhone.
This is a guess I am afraid but it's worth a bash!

I tried putting the SIM in another phone and even though the VM number was already set I did it again. Put it back in the iPhone, but still, the button doesn't do anything.
Any other ideas?

Strange. I'm on Orange too (in Switzerland) and the voicemail button works fine. But I don't get the notification by sms.
To anyone who has VM button working - when you put the sim into another phone, how are you configuring the VM number? (is it like on the nokia's where you hold down the '1' button till it either dials VM or asks you for the VM number?). Or is it one of the stored contact numbers saved on the SIM? Either way, can you confirm which phone you used to set the VM number and if it's stored as a sim contact the exact name you use (case sensitive)?
In case it's of relevance, I am using mine on Telstra mobile and the vm number i use is '101'.
Just a followup - I put my sim into a friend's Nokia 6070, held the '1' key down and was told that voicemail wasnt setup, so I set it up, put the sim back in the iphone and unfortunately, the voicemail button still doesn't work, nor does the carrier notification of a waiting voicemail.

Well, I might be wrong, but that's what I could find so far.
There are some networks that do the voice mail setup based on the call forwarding service.
ATT does it this way. When you configure you phone (and thus your SIM definitions in the network) to forward calls you'll be given several options:
1) Forward if busy
2) Forward if using data
3) Forward if unreachable
4) Etc
ATT uses "Forward if unreachable" to forward your calls to you voice mail box. It does that for all phones, not just iPhone.
This way, I think if you put your SIM in a phone that allows you to configure call forwarding and then Set the "Forward if unreachable" option to your own voice mail number, it might work.
The problem about that is that not every network uses the scheme, so you may end-up messing around with your voicemail box and even having to pay some fees for the forwarding.
Well, just a reminder: This is just guessing, but I would give it a try if I were you. :)

I have two Orange sims. With one of them, as said before, voicemail button works fine. With the other one, nothing happens. When I put the working sim in the Samsung of my wife, I can see an Orange Box entry in Service numbers (as well as customer care, etc...). It seems to be a number stored on the sim. Unfortunately, I don't have a sim reader to see how it's stored to be recognized by iPhone.
I've played with my sims on a Treo. Both sims have the voicemail number stored on the sim contact list. But only one has the voicemail that appears as service number on the Samsung. So it seems that on one sim, the voicemail number is stored in a different manner

Ok, I put my SIM & the AT&T SIM into a SIM Reader and checked it out.
The only regular stuff (in all sims) appears to be you IMSI, ICCID and the SMS center number.
In my local sim, I had 16 entries in the address book all related to the operator services including voicemail number, voicemail enable, voicemail disable, directory services etc etc.
Howerver, the AT&T sim has NOTHING.
My voicemail button does nothing on the phone screen, so I am really confused as to how some people are getting that button to dial their voicemail or are, did I dream that?
Perhaps I need to try and find a SIM that does do something different with the voicemail button and put that in the SIM reader. Perhaps there's a particular entry that the iphone will work with but its dependent on whether you SP has populated your SIM with it or not?
I would also like to know how the iphone deals with voicemail in general.
My Service Provider sends an voicemail related SMS after a voicemail is left, but these don't turn up on iphone. Or rather I think they do turn up but perhaps the visual voicemail routines in the phone are identifying them as VM related text messages and is trying to process them accordingly. This of-course would fail as expected, but might explain why the texts don't appear as regular SMS's.

Ok, this is really strange.
I have found a UK SIM that as soon as I put it into the phone, I got the red dot up to signify there was a voicemail waiting (Virgin).
I have read this SIM in a SIM Reader, and it is no different!?!?!??
Do the Service Providers do these things differently, because I can find no reason why some Service Providers do seem to be compatible with the iphone VM button and others arn't!?!??
Ironically, Virgin Mobile in the UK actually really uses the Orange network.

I don't think it's related to the service provider. I have two sims from Orange. One calls voicemail when I hit the button, the other one not. On both sims, voice mail number are available in contact list. But on the sim that works, the voice mail number is recognized as Service Number by a Samsung phone. I've asked a friend to bring me his sim reader. Maybe I can find the difference between these two sims.

Hmm, really interesting, that suggests we might be able to find a way to fix this for everyone if you have two SIM's on the same operator.
The problem is widespread but no-one seems to be worrying about it too much!?!?!
When I consider I don't even get the SMS notification, there's no way to know I have a voicemail, kinda quite significant I think !!
Anyone had any further luck figuring this out? I'd really like to have this service if possible, and would be willing to contribute a small paypal donation towards the person who solves the problem

call forwarding to voicemail or any other number if the phone is off/out of range or on another call or if user presses reject, and even how long a call remains unanswered for (which must be 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds) is governed by settings with the network..
it has nothing to do with the sim card. various os buttons or commands that you issue on your gsm phone to switch on and off all this forwarding and other stuff actually just send simple commands to the network .. which if you know them you can sent much more easily yourself.. eg 'forward all calls to 5555555 is just *21*5555555# <send>
at&t does it however the gsm spec says it has to (as per the above). contrary to what you say, every gsm network does actually use the same 'scheme' .... that's part of what makes gsm by far the best mobile telephony system globally.
the voicemail button on the iphone just dials a certain number that the os tells it too... i'm sure in time someone will work out which config or other os file this is in....

Not sure if this is relevant but here it goes anyway.
I have an AT&T activated phone. Edge is disabled from the AT & T end since I am in Trinidad for three months. The AT&T activated phone connects to bmobile here in Trinidad.
With Edge disabled on AT&T's end, one should have all voice functions with the exception of visual voice mail correct ?
Wrong:
1) When I turn the iPhone off, the caller gets a busy signal. No voice mail possibilities at all for the caller !!!
2) When the phone is turned on and I don't answer, after many many many rings, an operator comes on and says I'm not available ! Again no option for a caller to leave a message.
So, with edge turned off at AT&T's end, voice mail is completely disabled as well. And AGAIN, I do not mean just visual voice mail !
Can anyone confirm this who has Edge disabled and still is an AT&T customer ???

egprs (edge) has nothing to do with how the global network handles voicemail and forwarding to voicemail.
what is probably happening is that, when your phone is off, the trinidad network you are in is trying to call your at&t voicemail number which is usually 3 or 4 digits and that number is not recognised by the trinidad network.
it works like this: if you connect outside of your home network your phone (or your system) tells the network all of your forwarding settings so it knows how to handle calls if you are on another call or your phone is off etc.
but in some older gsm networks, the network (the one you are in) does not understand that your voicemail box is in the states (or wherever) so it just dials that 4 digit number... whereas it should dial +1 xxxx.. (and sometimes even this doesn't work).
i this case you need to call at&t and tell them you need to full voicemail number because you want to call it from a landline occasionally. then redo all of your call forwarding using this number and the standard gsm commands and your incoming callers will be forwarded to voicemail in the proper way.

I've looked pretty hard into the Voicemail thing, and I've come to the conclusion that it must be set on the SIM (or the phone has an internal database of VM numbers somewhere!).
I'm in New Zealand and my Vodafone SIM does nothing when the VM button is pressed.
I insert my T-Mobile SIM from the states (no network connectivity) and the VM button dials, but doesn't connect (no network).
I insert my AT&T SIM that came with the phone and nothing, I assume it's trying visual VM..
I don't know if there is a way in the filesystem to setup the VM number, but you can issue an AT command to the baseband to tell it your voicemail number. So you can get the voicemail button to at least work for networks it doesn't do anything on.
The command is AT+CSVM=1,"+6421700700" where +6421700700 is your VM access number. Short numbers (local) also work, so 707 for Voda NZ.
Voicemail notification doesn't work, for me at least, so this is only half the solution.

Ok, I now have the definitive answer to cover PIN eventualities !!
If you do find yourself in the middle of a modification in minicom and the AT command set is giving you an error after you have entered a known good command, all you need to do is enter:
AT+CPIN="xxxx"
Where xxxx is your SIM's PIN number.
This will tell the baseband that you are authorised to make changes.
Voila, you should now be able to submit the AT commands without an error being returned :-)
enjoy!

No this change is dependent on the SIM.
All you need to do is re-write is proper message center back to this card!
If he puts another card in, the SMS center should be correct, its only the VM number that appears to be un-populated on some cards for some reason!

Why create a thread (or even link to it) when there's a page on the wiki that has step by step instructions?
Well this thread was created before the WiKi and resulted in the creation of the IRC channel:
#iphone-config
on server
irc.os86.hu
It was on this channel that the pin problem was discovered which resulted in the original WiKi page being created on the dev pages.
Since then several new threads have been created by people duplicating the information trying to take credit for it all.

So does following the steps from the wiki (to activate the voicemail button to dial your voicemail number) have any bearing in actually getting the notification SMSs which the provider sends out when a voicemail is received?
I don't mind dialling my own voicemail number, but I do need to know when to do it...
healeydave
09-17-2007, 11:29 AM
The trick to populating your voicemail number is simply just that, to make the voicemail button in the Phone menu actually dial your VM Access number (like a quick short dial).
This sometimes works for people anyway, it depends on the SIM and Carrier.
The Voicemail notification is something else that I have tried to get devs to look at, so far without success.
My theory is that this problem bears a resemblance to SMS issue where SMS's that contain Alfa Characters do not make it though to the iPhone.
I have searched the net but I have not been successful in finding any information about the standard formatting of Voicemail notifications that the carriers send out.
Since I activated my VM button, I am getting VM notifications but they are in the form of may airtime balance coming up on the screen, which whilst a bit strange does help :-)
This is plaguing many users and I can't understand the reluctance for anyone to investigate it!
People have looked into springboard to figure out futile stuff like the carrier logo's, I can only assume the main people capable of investigating this, perhaps don't have the problem themselves ??
I myself receive very few voicemails and my carrier balance popping up is more than adequate for the few voicemails I receive but I am still keen to do what I can to help out on this matter because its one of the few remaining iPhone querks that needs ironing out.
The application that handles the on-screen "Dismiss" type messages is probably a good place to start since this is the application that is confusing a VM alert with a Balance Display in my case. I assume this is SpringBoard but I don't know for sure.
My phone may be an excellent example for this investigation as finding out why that notification is coming up, instead of a VM Alert would probably clear up all the problems of no notification at all!
If any dev's read this or anyone capable of dissecting the phone app responsible for this process want me to try anything out, please PM me.

Thanks for clearing that up. Might as well set up the voicemail button to the right number and see if there's any change in the notifications which currently don't come through
I'm not very clued in with the AT command set for GSM (things were so much easier in the 80s with modems), but I was doing some investigations in case there was an AT command (or set of AT commands) that might provide the key to receiving sms notifications. Here's a list of commands that I think may be relevant:
AT+CSSN - Supplementary service notifications
AT+CNMI - New message indications to 'TE'
AT+CMGR - Read message
AT+CMGL - List messages
AT+CMGF - Message format
AT+CPMS - Preferred message store
AT+CNUM - Subscriber number
AT+CSMS - Select message service
AT+CSMP - Set text mode parameters
AT+CSDG - show text mode parameters
AT+CSCB - Select cell broadcast message types
I'm not sure, but to play with these, you may need to do an AT&W to write the settings. Again, I'm only referring back to my modem days where an ATZ would restore the modem back to a set saved state.
Not sure if any of this will help or inspire anyone. I'm likely to wait to see what happens with the next firmware update for the phone. I'm hoping that some of the quirks which probably exist due to a lack of testing for markets outside the US will be rectified magically :-).

We've been working on these commands in #iphone-config
We have identified the messages are getting through to the iphone's baseband but the application is ignoring them.
Whether this is a baseband setting still that needs to be configured or a bug in the application is not certain yet but Darkmen (who did some work in SpringBoard to do with OP logos) did show an interest in this so fingers crossed he is looking at it from the application side.

Configure your VoiceMail button as per these instructions:
Install SSH and Minicom {minicom is installed through the BSD Subsystem}
run minicom -s from the SSH shell
Select Serial Port Setup
Press A
Change the device to /dev/tty.debug
Press Esc
Move down to Exit and press enter
Modem will initialize
{Debug mode is a lot less responsive than tty.baseband but you don't have to shutdown CommCenter}
{TIP: hold the space bar down until you get a response from the modem, then you can type the commands, if you find debug mode to hard to work with, use /dev/tty.baseband but you will have to shutdown commcenter first.}
If your voicemail access number is a short code or a non international number (e.g. Tesco Mobile UK = 905), type the command:
AT+CSVM=1,"905",129
If your voicemail access number is a long code international number (e.g. Orange UK = 447973100123), type the command:
AT+CSVM=1,"447973100123",145
confirm its been taken with:
AT+CSVM?
Exit Minicom with Ctrl A Z x
Configure you VoiceMail Notifications as per these instructions:
Dial into your VoiceMail using the access code (or using your newly configure button :-)
Listen to the instructions, you are looking for a notification menu.
e.g. on Tesco Mobile UK:
dial 905
Press * {for the voicemail main menu}
Select option 4 {for the mailbox settings menu}
Press 1 {for the voicemail notification menu}
Press 1 {for the on screen voicemail notification symbol}

I've tried a few methods of activating my VM button. none of them work. I'm using the original AT&T sim card.
Yeah, I went exhaustively through my carrier (telstra in australia)'s voicemail options looking for a notification menu late last week, including trying to select options that weren't offered, and couldn't find anything that allowed me to change the notification type. :-\

I ve done this for ages ... (configuring the operator voicemail with SMS notification)
When i have a message on voicemail, i have a blank screen that appears, (no text) and the Dismiss button. That is all , and no red dot on the voicemail button:(
I've found a really quick way of getting your voicemail button working at whirlpool.net.au (thanks to Simon K for the tip)
Go to the phone app and enter this sequence of numbers and call it:
*5005*86*xxx# then press CALL
(where xxx is the number you dial to get to your voicemail. On iSim (Optus), it's 321, so I typed *5005*86*321# then pressed CALL).
Voila! Voicemail button should work! Worked for me on Vodafone New Zealand

Ok, a few notes:
The iPhone application that handles voicemail has been written specifically to handle the Visual Voicemail facility that only works on an official AT&T contract.
This application also handles basic voicemail compatibility, for those using a mobile for more than several years, you will remember the days when you simply got an answer phone symbol on your phones display:
http://www.tivoland.com/ebaypics/vmail.gif
This is what you need to enable in your voicemail settings. Not all voicemail systems will offer the ability to select the notification type method!
If you are not receiving VM notifications on your iPhone, put your SIM into another phone and send yourself a test voicemail, note the notification type you receive. If its in the form of a text message then this is no good. You need to change the notification type in your voicemail service. If your voicemail service has limited options, you might be able to try calling your carriers customer support and ask them if they are able to set the notification type from their end.
I'm afraid if your voicemail system does not allow the setting of "Answer Phone Symbol", there is probably nothing more you can do short of encouraging a developer to reverse the iPhone's applications and modify it to support VM text messages. We know the text message based VM notifications are making it through to the phones baseband but the theory is that the application is ignoring them or at least the messages that contain alpha characters as part of the message header (e.g. the From field etc).
The UK o2 voicemail system (and hence Tesco Mobile also as they use the same network) is one that does support the selection of the notification type. This link describes the process to change the notification type, if you want to use it as a reference:
http://www.o2.co.uk/services/messaging/voicemail901/domorewith901
Good Luck.
Dave.
If you're with sunrise in switzerland you can activate simple notification by sending sms to 930 with simple on (5.-- once). After this you get again notified if someone left you a messi.. ("red dot" on voicemail button and a "+" on the phone icon) :)

I used *5005*86*121# for vodafone UK and it worked, the voicemail button is now enabled. Another tip for voicemail is to change the notification options (if available) to a non-txt message method, e.g. alert or alert & deliver. On vodafone this means that voicemail calls you when there are messages, no SMS alert needed (the ones that iphone cant deliver)

You are right, I just noticed that when someone left voicemail, I DO NOT receive SMS notification. I just tried type in

To aaronliu:
Then I'm afraid it's like what healeydave described at p.7 #65, the carrier's Voice Mail SMS Notification is completely ignored by iPhone. Unless there's an option to change the notification to a different way with TransAsia, I guess that's the way it is for now.
As for as I know:
FarEasTone: No way to change
Taiwan Mobile: SMS or Call Back
CHT: ??
TransAsia: ??
Let's not drift away from the topic, please PM me if you get any success over at TransAsia or CHT.

Make sure you have Voicemail activated - dial 1211 to activate

If you want to deactivate voicemail at any time dial 1210

do you have a number you can dial to access your voicemail from a landline/different phone? I.e., with my carrier in Germany (eplus), i can dial it with an "inserted" 99: my regular number is +49 177 xxxxxxxx.
To check my voicemail from my iPhone, I dial a shortcut (like 9911).
To check my voicemail from a different phone, I dial +49 177 99 xxxxxxxx.
After entering the latter into the "code" above (not the "shortcut"), my voicemail button on the iPhone finally started working! Yay! So you may want to check with your carrier if there is such a complete number for checking your voicemail.

Can't find any option for this type of notification via Telstra voicemail in Australia. I tried to set up "callback" to my mobile number, but that seemed to result in some sort of circular voicemail thing where it would try to callback, go straight to voicemail and leave a long silent message asking for a pin, then it would call itself again when THAT message was received! So I turned that off pretty quick.
Can't hear an option for "icon notification" or "simple notification" though, seems like it's either an SMS or a call :( Anyone had any luck with calling Telstra to get this changed?
EDIT: I've also noticed that I can't turn off or on my voicemail for different situations via the iPhone either... using the ##61# type codes give me nice messages saying that the forwarding type was disabled, but I tried this for Busy, UnAnswered and Out-of-range and none of them actually stopped calls going to my voicemail. Weird.

f you have successfully unlocked your iPhone, you may have discovered already that the voicemail button doesn't do anything at all. It won't give you visual voicemail, but you can easily get the voicemail button to work using any carrier following these steps:
1. First, take note of what your voicemail number is with your current provider (for example, in Spain the Vodafone voicemail number is 177).
2. Click on the phone button in your iPhone.
3. Click on the keypad tab.
4. Tap the following code:
*5005*86*xxx#
The xxx is the voicemail number, in our example it will read: *5005*86*177#
5. Tap call.
6. After a second, the code will have been set.
7. Tap now on the voicemail button and it will automatically call your usual voicemail service.

Well, I'll just keep bumping the thread until someone figures out a solution for users with their voicemail numbers starting with an asterisk (*).
Did you try the Minicom method (i.e. issuing the AT+CSVM=1,"xxxxxx" command directly to the modem) ?????
Incidentally that's how I got mine working on UK Vodafone, even though the voicemail number is a simple number (121)
But it may work better than the keypad dial job given that there's likely to be no translation when sent via the AT modem command, compared to putting it through the keypad as a 'number'...
Configure your VoiceMail button as per these instructions:
[...]
If your voicemail access number is a long code international number (e.g. Orange UK = 447973100123), type the command:
AT+CSVM=1,"447973100123",145
confirm its been taken with:
AT+CSVM?
Exit Minicom with Ctrl A Z x
[...]
I am getting the AT+CSVM command to execute and return OK, but then the AT+CSVM? command still shows the same (unchanged) number. How can that be? No SIM lock code or anything like that (and in any case it would cause AT+CSVM to return ERROR)
Here is the session transcript:

I was wondering if anyone has this problem too? I have the VM button working okay, but am still forced to enter a 4 digit passcode to access my voicemail once it dials after I press the voicemail button.
I spoke with ATT, and as I am on the old Blue sim, on the charter plan, I was told by them that passcode request cannot be turned off like the newer ATT sims, so I have to press voicemail, wait a few seconds, then enter on the keypad the 4 digit passcode, and was hoping to be able to modify this somehow and only have to press the voicemail button once, (no passcode) and I could then be inot my voicemail portal, no extra steps.
please let me know if there is a way around this. ATT tells me NO.

Another way to set configure your voicemail dialing (if it doesn't work with the voice mail button, or if you want to change the number that it dials), is as follows:
1. Download the program sendmodem from: http:// code . google . com /p/iphone-elite/downloads/list (remove the spaces and download the file sendmodem.zip)
2. Put the file sendmodem in /usr/bin on the iPhone and change it to executable with chmod +x sendmodem
3. Then execute the following command on the iPhone from /usr/bin
sendmodem "AT+CSVM=1,\"yournumberhere\""
where your number is e.g. +15551239999

Click on your iPhone's phone button.
Then click on the Keypad tab.
You need to then add the following code: *5005*86*xxx#.
Here xxx would be your voicemail number. (UK vodafone 121)
After entering the code you tap call.:D
