I attempted this unlock about a week or so ago only to short out the battery and have my iPhone bellow out smoke and soot. Has anyone managed to return their iPhone after something like this happening, with the excuse that the iPhone exploded or something, and got a replacement? The case has some visible signs of trying to be opened, but I suppose all they can say is no.

incidently, you have no idea how pissed I am with myself after having just read that a software unlock for 1.1.2-4.6 is now available.

any info would be great!.

i for one think your up sh** creek without a paddle, and unlucky as hell.

but i blew up my old nano sort of and they replaced it, try your luck. i did, i had 4 replacment nanos in 5 months really, but then again the people at my service place really didnt seem too curious about how i blew it up, just asked me to fill up some details and wait a week or so for a replacment.

Did you return all of these Nano's to an Apple Store, heheh? And how did you blow them up? Just curious.

I opened up a phone just to see if I could see some cables loose and figure out why I was getting no service with whatever card I put in. Needless to say I couldnt fix it. So I put it all back together (wasnt too noticeable that I opened it) but the phone had been dropped aloottttttt. So they tried to comeplain about that, but eventually they gave in after talking to the manager. So all worked out. Replaced it on the spot.

Yup, I exchanged two of them for brand new Iphones, one of them I upgraded to 16GB by paying extra $100. No hassles at all.

I kept all the plastic wrapping and neatly boxed it up on my way back :)

Even after opening phones up the "Genius" said my phone looked untouched and called manager for immediate exchange! ha! :D

Hmmm...I guess I'll give it a shot. What excuse or reason did you give them or what did you say? Do you think I should try bending the metal a little back into shape or just tell them that there was so much pressure from the smoke that the metal popped open a little, etc...

Also, do you think it'll be a problem that there is black soot all over the inside of the phone? I never actually attempted the hardware unlock, so all of the internals are in the same condition they were before I tried opening it. It's just the metal back that is a bit bent on the sides.

my suggestion is to go find a new iphone case first and replace it so it looks new.

and what about the serial no on the back? ;)
I'd give it a shot.. if they dont exchange it get it sent back and try to sell the parts piece by piece... I bet most of them still work

I think I'm just gonna try selling the parts. I'd honestly feel bad going in there and telling them an outright lie in the hopes that they'd give me what would be a free iPhone. And I would feel even worse if I told that lie and they laughed in my face. So hopefully people need/want parts!

why dont u just replace the battery? is not that hard, and u actually already open the phone (hard part) ;)

I wonder if I place one of the old cassette tape erasers the electric kind and try to wipe it out and then take it to the apple store if they will replace it.
