Please can someone help me... I'm going nuts over this!
I originally installed ssh and it worked fine first time... but yesterday I restored my iphone, re-activated it using iActivator and install ssh... everything seems to go well, no errors just like before!
BUT, everytime I try to install something using scp, I just get an error say that its an read only system... I can connect to the phone using ssh and also with WinSCP, but all access seems to be read only!!!!
Any ideas guys... I've restored my iphone 4 times now and its doing my head in!
Thanks
Stewart

You are logging in as root, right?

You are logging in as root, right?
Yes, and it was working yesterday just fine before I restored...
What I have noticed is if I return the phone to jail I only get read only access, eg. I can't chmod anything or scp apps over (error given: read only file system), but if I jail break, I get write access and can chmod and install apps... eg. scp -r LightsOut.app root@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:/Applications/
Before I could install apps with the phone jailed... isn't this the purpose of SSH?
I've managed to install 'installer.app' it works fine, but its unable to unpack packages due to the read only state! I've also tried the chmod +x ditto as mentioned on their webiste...
Any ideas!

What method you used?
The old dropbear method may not work with new firmware 1.0.1:)

I use a method that has dropbear in it... and it worked before the restore and I was updated to 1.01... what other methods are there?

I have now tried various mac/pc methods and they all install fine but once I return the phone to jail (using iActivator), the SSH/SCP access becomes read only and the application 'installer.app' is unable to unpack pages regardless of its jailed state.
Is it possible that apple have recently changed the restore image that iTunes downloads - obviously my phone came with v1.0 and was upgraded to v1.0.1... the SSH installed worked without problems then, but now it seems theres something different with the downloaded image!
Anyone have any suggestions/thoughts?

Why did you return to jail using iActivator?

Why did you return to jail using iActivator?
Well why not? I'm only using the 'Jail' feature from it... is there a problem doing this?... I thought the phone wouldn't sync with iTunes unless you return it to jail... its what I've always done and haven't had a problem?

I've just checked my phone, and it seems most files are set to either 755 or 644. You could just run 'chmod -fr 755 /'. This will make every single file executable by all, readable by all but only writable by root. I'm not sure if any app needs write permissions to other files, so you may need to make it 775.
And MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE ROOT PASS!!

When then, I'm not sure which has helped, but I was in the process of SCP'ing Services.plist to the Lockdown directory (I understand its the manual way to re-jail the phone... is that right????) as opposed to using iActivator to jail the phone and I also chmod -fr 755 / as per phattie's post below...
The phone appears to be jailed and I (as root) have write access via SSH/SCP... BUT, 'Installer.app' still can't unpack packages... it downloads them, but fails to unpack!
Well, its a start... so thanks to everyone whos offered help!
i get this problem on step 1 & 4. What am i doing wrong? Im using 1.1.1 firmware

You need to put sftp-server under iPhone.
And I have tested. Cyberduck is not the best tool to access sftp. I think you can try Fugu:)
