I currently own an IBM ThinkPad and am seriously considering switching and buying a mac system. I'm hoping someone can help me in my decision by running down the pros and cons of each. Greatly appreciated!!!!!!:)

Choosing the platform that best fits your needs is really going to depend of what you use the system for.

I recently bought a MacBook, using it with VMware Fusion meets 99% of my Windows needs.

hi
i don't really think what your using it for makes a difference!
true some apps may only run on pc's but ive always found an alternative, and normally the alternative is the better!
apple stuff is expensive, but i think it more than justifys this over a pc. any macbook, mini comes with any feature you could get on a pc but how many pc's you seen that catches your eye like a mac? and how smooth tiger is to use as oposed to xp.
if your used to ms stuff like office then mac does this, everyday users can use it and hi end users often find the power of the mac far superior.
so far im on my third mac and i would truly recommend one over a pc to anyone. the intergration of the system regardless of whether your a .mac customer is superb.
i was once told that cause pc are built using many different configurations from many different companies and mac are built on specific core specs, developers will make better software knowin what exact specifications to develope for rather than deloping software for a lot of different combination of specs.
now i dont even know if that is justifyable but i do know than once i was a pc'er and then i saw the light and discovered mac! and if i had my way never click a 'start' bar in my life!

im really concidering just to fcuking switch to a mac already. now with the 10.5.x operating system working with no problems for users, now would be a good idea to complete my task.

im pleased with the dual-boot feature bootcamp gives. the only thing going through my head is I need the dual-boot as I do income tax filings with a PC-based software package. I know i'll be able to install, download and update any bug-fixes the application uses.

Im also using an HP officejet 5610 for printing (USB). i hope its not too difficult to install a windows driver.. i know how difficult it was in windows 95 days, and with older linux installations (2.4.x). man, it sucked. :( that's why i didn't complete my jump into linux b/c i couldn't print anything...

Hey.

I have just recently switched to mac, and i have to say it is AMAZING. You will not regret switching to it. I have always been a windows user, but could not stop myself from buying a macbook this time because of all the reviews and the way it looks.

I have one question to mac users though. I want to use vista on my mac together with leopard. and i read that i need to get Parallels for mac. Does anyone here have any coments about vista on a macbook? ie: any problems, slowing...

You can dualboot into vista, by using boot camp. It comes free with the purchased mac.

It'll run vista natively.

Also, running parallels / VmWare fusion will be SLOWER. You wont experience xps/vistas graphics crap.

I'd say go with dual boot. Cheaper=)

Make the switch. Within 1 month you'll be selling other Windows users to make the switch. I bought my first MacBook Pro 1 year ago. Now I have a 20" iMac, an iPhone, Airport Extreme and 4 iPods. I upgraded to Leopard the day it released and had a flawless conversion on both the MBP and iMac. I've never had a hickup and love the automatic software upgrades delivered by Apple. Total experience is a far cry from the 15 years of Microsoft challenges I've had.

I run Parallels with XP on the MBP and it's perfect. I only run three programs on Windows (Access, Money and a little utility I can't live without called eWallet) and switch over to IE when I run into a web site that dosn't support Safari (which has happened only 4 times in the last year). Windows and Leopard running on the same platform at the same time is an amazing experince. Clearly, the best of both words.

My home network is solid, stable and amazingly fun to interact with on the Mac platform. The OS is simple and quick to pick up. Even my wife (a weak Windows and technology user) loves the Mac and tells her friends how much better life is with the Mac than all the problems we had with Windows.

All in all, I won't go back and I was die hard Windows. You won't either once you get past the initial few questions. There are tons of resources, video training clips, and support sites to assist your transition.

Make the plunge and enjoy learning something new again. the foundation you have with Windows will make the switch easy and you'll be glad you did.

by a macbook pro 17" you will be amazed and for xp, as vista is the bigger crap, you have bootcamp.

osX is far the best os.

parallels (softwindows) does'nt fit if you connect special electronics like cas/cam's as this gives an error when programming, therefore bootcamp (if you need m$) ...

ideaguy you're not going to get a fair shake of PC vs Mac here - obviously this site is mostly all Mac fans.

I'm an iPhone fan, and recently started using OS X for the iPhone SDK. I can say that I'm not too impressed. It's really dumbed down for the average user. Now, I am a developer so it probably doesn't fit my needs, but both Windows and Ubuntu can be adapted for power users. Things that how finder doesn't offer you an address bar (the pane view is okay to meh), no freaking straight up Hibernate (seriously wtf, ok Safe sleep, but why did I have to bust out the terminal for it, and why cant I sleep and hibernate and consider those discreet options) are a couple of my gripes. Though you should give it a try at least. You may love it.

Everyone loves to rip on Vista, and it's got it's issues, but the explorer in Vista is greatly improved - very multithreaded now so it doesn't hang, progress bar in the address bar, new large icon view mode, and other stuff. Just one thing that comes to mind.

i need to get over the assumptions i made in 1992! (LC II).
Rockwell had a bunch of classic, color classic and LC IIs w/paperwhite VGA with an 8.5x11" monitor! cost about $3'000.

with OS X (10.1.x and beyond) the command line (unix) has came back. that's one of my selling points. there's a few more questions i can google around to get answered. :D

Hello everybody,
So on, for my self Mac product as always be a expensive solution and I've done all on windows since 3.1 :)

Now it seems that I could run for test purpose a Mas OS, so go on as I'm curious about it O:)
I've try the Kalyway 10.5.1 on my gigabyte EP35DS4 with a E8200 cpu and nvdia card. :hack:

So surprise it's not easy at seems to be, will always says windows is lower than :pie: , humm not sure....

Even with a "non official" version it works on every pc, even the steam machinery called Vista...
Here I've a SSE 1 to SSE4 compatible processor but the vanilla kernel that need SSE 3 doesn't work, same with audio realteck a standard chips for sure ( on searching internet I've found a patch that could work on it a AppleHDA file)...

For my first experience, well what to says...
It looks beautiful for sure, no way to run a competitor with windows on that point.
But when you don't have money for it, it seems a bit difficult to run it as easily you make it with windows, it more looks like Linux with many commands line to get out of the box...

So why cross the bridge, that's my question !
Even the update doesn't work...
You may use indirect links and many manual change to apply it...
And what if, is so many...

Any advice for a real new discover in your MacWorld :)

Thanks a lot.
Ps: sorry for my poor english I've learn it a school :D

Pc vs MAC - where is the difference ? Hardware is the same...right now u can find same CPUs, same HDD, VGA all other...Design ? cant argue with anyone - everybody has own point of view...
So the only difference is the system !
Gaming ? win, u cant beat amount of games released for microsoft platform (yet i hope), but i dont take gaming consoles in consideration here...
Programimng - nothing can beat Linux...
Graphical Development - i would use Mac OS, i am planning to at least :) (as soon as i will fix my after-update-broken hackintosh installation :/ )

I love my Mac. I switched a year ago and I'll never look back. My whole family has too. I had it on a student discount with extended apple care for cheap too. It's now my TV (I get Freeview without a Freeview Box in the UK - Digital TV for free), stereo, DVD player etc. Just doesn't make tea :D

Edit: Switching is super easy. I work on windows at work, so I rarely get the cut and paste commands wrong. Apart from that you get used to it very fast.

macs do everything faster. nothing is running in the background unless you are allowing it to do so, theres no programs pre-installed that you wouldnt want, lets say you go out todayand buy a HP laptop, bam you are loaded with AOL online, Earthlink online, McAfee virus protector which will ask you to buy it everyday of your life once the trial is up. only thing you will miss out on is when you dont have programs you usually like to have such as microsoft word, but they have iWork and its cheaper than buying microsoft office anyways. hmm, unzipping certain files didnt work out for me in the beginning until i got Zipeg, something easy and unzips it all and its free. microsoft paint is something else you might want just to do a quick photo crop or editing, and they have something called Painbrush. instead of paying for iwork you can get NeoOffice which worked great so far for me and its free too. only thing is that i say iwork will be better. (went to print handout of powerpoints 3 perslide, and they didnt have the option for that). if you a gamer you will see others switching to macs running bootcamp (because you can utilize all the ram to windows) and than bam it runs faster than running the game on a windows only computer.
