OSx86 DVD Boot Process

I was wondering about how the OSx86 dvds boot? I take it they chain load from the windows-readable partition, and are a merged cdfs/HFS disc? How could you set about rebuilding another disc? Could you extract the boot image, insert them into an iso from the cdfs partition, make an HFS iso from the original disc, and re-merge them? Because I attempted this, and the boot failed. Is this possible in any way?
