Hello all,

I'm off to NY tomorrow and thinking of buying an iPhone.

Frankly I can't be arsed to fiddle about with the SuperSim method myself, I'm not that technical. I don't know how old my Vodafone SIM is, I took part in the Vodafone 3G trial back in about 2003 and I think they swapped my SIM then.

Basically what I'm saying is - is there anyone in the UK who is prepared to do all the technical stuff for me in exchange for cash? I'll pay £100 or so (via Paypal) if anyone in the UK can give me a SIM which will work on an iPhone in the UK.

Just to clarify as well -would it be a PAYG SIM? I've been on contract with Vodafone since about 1995 so I don't really know how PAYG SIM's work.

There still seems to be some misunderstanding: you need an ACTIVE SIM with an ACTIVE contract. Who would be dumb enough to give you an active SIM?
Buying a de-activated V1 SIM may not be a good idea since A. you don't know if it still works and B. the SIM provider may not want to re-activate the SIM with a different contract.

Save your money (and some hassle) and wait for the unlock.

Not sure what you mean by PAYG SIM. You need a V1 SIM, no matter who the cell service provider in your country is. You need an active SIM and this means you need a valid contract with that V1 active SIM.

Like I said: save yourself a lot of trouble (and headache) and wait for the unlock. There seems to be some sort of euphoria/hysteria regarding the Super SIM but the truth is, it works only with V1 SIMs which need an active and valid contract and it is ILLEGAL in most countries. In some countries, using a Super SIM is a highly criminal offense and you may get in serious trouble.

Again (for everybody):

1. you need an active V1 SIM incl. a valid contract
2. you need a SIM reader/writer (Infinity USB Unlimited recommended, also because it has two slots, one for regular smartcards, one for SIMs)
3. you need a Silvercard
4. you need the already mentioned two programs (Woron Scanner, etc.)
5. you need to have at least mediocre computer skills, this isn't something for "newbies"

The Super SIM method is actually more of a proof of what can be done, it isn't necessarily a method for daily usage, especially since it may be highly illegal in the country you're living. We're not talking about a fine of a couple of bucks but prison. In some countries some very old telecommunications laws are in effect, meaning that you may get a very severe punishment, even as an adolescent.

Considering the current anti-terror laws in most western states, using a Super SIM could also put you in trouble on airports if security opens up your phone and discovers the Super SIM which doesn't look much as a provider SIM. Don't think these guys are stupid, some of them are trained to look for little details.

Just save yourself a lot of trouble and wait for the unlock. The Super SIM method is not for everybody, you have been warned.

PAYG is Pay As You Go, ie non-contract. You buy them for £10 or less and top them up in shops, ATM's etc as you need credit.

I think I'll buy the iPhone, activate it and use it as an iPod and wireless device and wait for the unlock
