I am suprised that there is no UIKit IM client yet. With Adium being open source, and all the gAIM libraries it seems like it should be fairly easy to put together a client... or am I wrong?

ya, someone make a IM client!! that would be awsome ^^ AIM or MSN would be great
Isn't the gAIM (now libpurple afaik) written in C of sorts? Will the iPhone be able to handle integration with those libraries?

i think the problem is the gui. all the underlying stuff could probably be easily put together, but i think the interface will have to be written from scratch.

This would be so awesome. I'm sure some hackers must be out there cracking away at making this happen :D

This one works fine for me for now...

It supports simultaneous connections to AIM®, MSN®, Yahoo!®, GoogleTalk®, ICQ®, and Jabber.

It would be really cool though to have a native chat application so you could have a little popup come onto the screen notifying you of a new message, kind-of like if you get a new SMS from someone...

The problem is that no matter what anyone makes in the IM world, it will never gain widespread use because Apple will come out with an updated MobileChat application with IM Support.
Even if it is limited to just the normal iChat types, I would personally move to it exclusively and just cut myself off from the other IM mediums while I am out and about.
Sure I would like an IM client that works with every medium, the idea of having my Text Messaging and Instant Messaging in one place is a little higher on my want-list.

I personally have AdiumX on my Mac and Im using it extensively, I never use iChat..and I think if you had bunch of friends outside iChat, you wouldnt say that ;)

Looks like someone is working on porting libpurple (gaim)
http://code.google.com/p/apolloim/
Very early stages of development though...

Doesnt seem like there has been any progress yet... weird because I would have figured AIM would be the first thing people would want.
