Personally, I am working on getting an IM client working that doesn't need to be in a web browser, can stay online always just sending keep-alives over the edge connection to save battery, and then downloading messages once every couple seconds.

Still have a long way to go as this is just a part-time side project but I am hoping to have something meaningful in a month or so.

Hey adrian, would be awsome if you did that, I'll be looking out for an IM client^^ I hate using the browser, it's crappy looking and glitchy and you can't close safari or the IM program looses connection, it's really crap. The iphone can really use a real IM app.
