Why should it work ? Have you ever read the specifications for the iPhone? There are currently no video-out support.

Steve's iPhone was a modificated one said by him self on the keynote in January where he showed it the first time.
Also there might probably be ways to make it work but nothing public yet.. so keep your cable and wait, and really - what kind of cable did you bought? An iPod Video cable or what?

to use that cable (if it works) you would need to run the demoapp. This is the same app that steve used for his keynote. I would say it's worth a try if you know how to add it to your springboard.app .

Use this instead and follow these instructions:

If using this cable for iPod video, you will need to following these steps: red plug to yellow jack, yellow plug to white jack, white plug to red jack.

You might have to cut around the plastic a bit to fit in the ipone jack but it should work.

Are you sure the jack sends video? I doubt it..

The iPod with video has a special jack for sending video. Normally, a "headphone" jack has 2 rings, one for left and one for right. The video cable has 3 rings, the third one being for video.

This is by no means a novel idea...camcorders have been using it for a while. For some stupid reason, Apple used a different ordering of the rings. So if you use the Apple video cable, the colors are correct (yellow is video, red and white are audio). But, if you use a generic (and much cheaper) video cable, the order is different from Apple, hence the configuration kfernandes29 described.

As for the iPhone, there are 3 rings, but I the third one is used for voice and not video.

These cables are fairly cheap so if you can, pick one up and give it a try and let us know how it goes. :D

I think that the extra ring on the iPhone jack is for the microphone, you are more than welcome to let us know how it goes though.

I'd try it for shits and giggles but neither of my cables fit in the damn hole. Thanks Apple.

Cut around the plastic on the cable. Worked for me and 3.5-to-3.5 cable.

Hmmm...I wonder if that third ring is tied to carrying audio. Perhaps it's possible that it could carry video instead of voice if you plug in a different cable and launch the right app. Sure would be nice.

I believe the 3rd ring is used for a combination of the microphone and the "button" on the headset.

Hi, Remember when Steve Jobs first present the iPhone? He did connect to the bottom of the phone, not the headphone jack. I guess one of the pin shoud have the video output.

I have a wireless fm transmitter for ipod video from xtreme mac. it works with iphone, even iphone will disable the radio as long as connected, but you said you need it for your car for example. so you can send music via air and it will be charged the same time, because its for the dock connector

Hi there; has anyone figured out the pinouts for the main/bottom connector port on the iPhone?
I know for sure that the audio line level left and right outs are different to the iPod as my iPhone doesn't work in my iPod car adaptor. It just continues playing out through the internal loudspeaker :(
And if anyone has figured out what pin video might come out on that would pretty good too eh?!

freeproductions, you should be able to figure out the audio line level outputs using the dock that came with your iPhone. it has a line out jack on the back, just use your multimeter & figure out which dock connector pins have continuity to the line out jack.
