Forgive me for being a newb but how do I install this?
I see the application on my screen but when I go to it all I see is a black screen that freezes and goes back to the main screen.
I've got a folder named NESApp.app with all the included files in the zip .... Do I need to do anything thing else other then jailbreak?

/var/root/Media/ROMs/NES
you have to create the last 2 directories

mkdir /var/root/Media/ROMs

kurro, of course I tried Google search, but some ROMs dont work on this emulator, and second that Super Mario game is right protected so you cant download it (at least from most sites). Anyway.....kudos to the author of this emulator, and keep up with the updates, right now the emulator is still not playable (too slow, some ROMs dont work, controls if work at all, work in unpredictable way).
Cant wait to have something like Vsun on my iPhone ;)

Might I suggest a controller remix? Select and Start aren't that important, so if we move them out of the way, we can increase the screen space of the Dpad and AB buttons. Here's my idea:

..and one more thing, can the screen be bigger also? (maybe auto hide the top bar? or utilize the space a little better on the sides)

sweet dealz. I like the idea of landscape better since it's kinda like free real estate on the sides. I agree with theviolator on hiding the title bar and buttons. I think any way to make the buttons larger and further apart is better.
And now I'm inspired to do a mock up of such a landscape mode....

Ok, been hard at work here. I've come up with this layout.
When you launch the app, you get none other than Coverflow for your games. :D
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/3064/nesideagameflowog1.jpg
So, you choose a game, and it launches in a layout like this:
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/1772/nesideagameplaykw8.jpg
And, if you need to go back to the game list or restart the game, click the red Nintendo at the top. The game suspends and a menu pops up:
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/7843/nesideaoptionshu7.jpg
I realize this is far fetched for 3rd party apps right now, but it's just an idea and would be cool to incorporate some or all of these ideas when possible.

Hello, does anyone know if the iPhone cpu is powerful enough to support SNES emulation?
NES games are nice, but SNES has really incredibly addictive games...
With titles like Seiken Densetsu 3, Chrono Trigger or Zelda, that would totally blow!
kurro

I guess one way to find out is to find an open source SNES emulator (like InfoNES) and port it in a similar manner and see what happens.

The iPhone is nearly 2x faster, than the Nokia N95. ARM Processors with that amount of power should be able to emulate the SNES, MAME and Co. BUT it takes alot of experience to write proper (and fast) code.
Thats great,
I suppose that it would also be possible to emulate GBA then, that would make the iPhone so much more desirable for me!
sumorai
08-09-2007, 05:39 PM
Here's the problem with emulating video game systems on the iPhone: no buttons. What they did with the NES emulator is innovative and brilliant, IMO. BUT, that doesn't work as well for other systems. You may be able to get a reasonable experience emulating NES, Genesis, GameBoy and other systems that have simple controllers, but how would an emulator provide a playable experience for SNES when it has four more buttons than the NES controller? Same goes for the GBA.
Making a virtual controller is hard enough as is. Unless someone takes the idea of creating an external controller via the dock connector, you're unlikely to be able to play SNES, GBA, etc. games because there just isn't enough space on the screen for the controls.

I did it very easy, first I created a folder on my Desktop and named it "ROMs".
Inside ROMs I created a new folder called "NES". When you download Nintendo Roms from the internet you unzip them or whatever and leave them in the NES folder with nothing more than they're name and the ".nes" fileextension.
Then you can for example use this command when NOT logged into your iPhone through SSH:)
scp -rp desktop/ROMs root@10.0.1.199:/var/root/Media
Remember to correct the IP :)
BUT OVER TO MY QUESTION:
Could someone tell me how to install sound ?

Already is a reality!
There is a new version here: http://www.modmyiphone.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=354
With the new button setup (and a landscape mode)
AND WITH SOUND!
..but only with headphones and you have to disable mediaserverd, but I don't know how.
The README says this:
NOTE ON SOUND
Sound required that you disable mediaserverd, and only works through the
headphones. A couple of easy aliases can be added to your .profile to disable or
re-enable mediaserverd if you are using MobileShell:
alias \
nosound="/bin/launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/coreaudiod.plist"
alias \
sound="/bin/launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/coreaudiod.plist"
What is .profile?

What is .profile?
It's very quiet, but yes it does work. .profile is a file in your home directory (/var/root on the iPhone) that is read in by the shell. Essentially that creates two commands you can type in the terminal (sound & nosound) that you can type in to turn on/off the sound. So, put those commands in /var/root/.profile

Yep.
The easiest way is to create a text file on your computer, call it profile, put the two alias commands in it, then use SCP to transfer it over to the iPhone.
scp profile.txt root@1.2.3.4:/var/root/.profile

All you have to do is make a text file called profile.txt, and put the alias info into it:
alias \
nosound="/bin/launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/coreaudiod.plist"
alias \
sound="/bin/launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/coreaudiod.plist"
scp it to your iPhone:
scp profile.txt root@ipaddress:/var/root/.profile
where ipaddress = your iPhone's IP address.
Restart your iPhone, go into Terminal.app and type nosound and hit return. Hit the home button, start NES.app, select a ROM, and the sound will play. Just that simple.
But if you exit out of the NES.app, and try to restart it again, or sleep your iPhone and wake it, the sound probably won't work again. So either restart the iPhone or else reenable regular iPhone sound by going into Terminal and typing sound. Then do nosound again.
Also it may depend on which version of NES.app you have. The one I used in the video was v0.24. nervegas released new version since then, with the current latest build being v0.27, which also works just fine with the above method. Get the latest version here:

Try putting a blank line as the first line of profile.txt. Something similar happened to me when I first tried it too. I just moved the first "alias" line of text down so it wasn't all the way at the top. So, say this is the top profile.txt:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
alias \
etc.
Just leave one blank line before you put the text. Don't put those dashes, I just used that to represent the top of the file.

I LuciferChaos, I just followed the dirs you posted and had a similar result. If type sound or nosound from the Terminal app on the iphone I get no command error, but if I connect SSH from my mac and do it in terminal it executes properly.
The only difference being that sounds only works from the headset, but it your video it appeared to be working from the speaker?
Is there a chmod step we might have missed? Or does the terminal app not log you in as root automatically? just ideas, I'm new to unix.

From iPhone's terminal do "source /var/root/.profile", now you can do sound/nosound from terminal.
Sound works with headphones only for me also.
LuciferChaos
08-11-2007, 10:12 PM
Don't really know what else I can tell you guys. The steps I detailed worked fine for me... I think nervegas said in his documentation that if you have the headphones plugged in when you do it, it won't work through the speakers after you unplug them. Are you doing the nosound while you have headphones plugged in? If so, don't have the headphones plugged in when you do nosound. But that shouldn't be the issue with the "no command" error... You guys have the bin-kit installed too right? Oh, and after you put the .profile onto your iPhone, you have to shut down the iPhone by holding the power button until the slider comes up to power off. Make sure you slide to power off completely, then restart. If you have done all of that, I can't say why it doesn't work for you...
Also theres a new build - v0.28 - "0.28 [nervegas] Added save SRAM support (to save SRAM for games like Zelda)" - from the changelog

I'm having the same problem. The sound works fine through my headphones, but not through the speaker. I have tried restarting my phone with my headphones unplugged and plugged in, as well as doing the nosound command both ways. Easiest way is to use a Windows/GUI based app to transfer the files in to the correct folders from the outset. Try WinSCP on Windows or rbrowser on MAC. You literally just drag and drop your files from PC/MAC to iphone this way (you'll need SSH server installed on iphone, which you say you have).
If you'd prefer to do this via terminal session (directly on iphone) simply launch MobileTerminal on iphone, go to directory where the NES ROM files are located and move them over to the NES ROMS directory. e.g.
cd /<FULLPATHOFDIRCONTAININGROMS>
mv <ROMFILENAME> /var/root/Media/ROMs/NES/

Did you try putting a blank line as the first line of .profile/profile.txt? Also, the transfer of profile.txt to the iPhone as .profile is not a folder, its a file. So if you made a folder called .profile, that could also be the problem. As a matter of fact, that probably is the problem. .profile is a file, not a folder.

Hey guys, I realize this is a work in progress, but I am curious if I am the only one with this problem. My NES emulator sound works, but it seems to be lower quality than it should be -like only part of the song is getting through. I played the exact same rom files on my Tmobile Dash before and they sounded great, like 100% as good as a real NES. I assume this isn't a hardware limitation of the iPhone, so is this something I am doing wrong, or is the emulator simply not there yet?
Thanks for all the work that you've done so far. Every time my installer.app has an update for NES I get excited!

Does it matter what roms you put or does it have to be for the iphone? I'm not sure where to get some. Please let me know.

As far as I know regular nes roms work, there is no special type. I'm assuming that it's against forum rules to tell people where/how to pirate free software off the internet, so I'll just say that I've heard the nes roms are not hard to find if you look in the normal places where people pirate software from. They are often found in large packs with hundreds or thousands of games downloadable at once!
This is an awesome potential, but as I stated above, the sound doesn't seem to work properly yet, and it is a bit stuttery. Since the iPhone has something like twice the processing power of my old Tmobile Dash, which ran NES perfectly, I am assuming these problems will be overcome soon!

I've also been experiencing bad sound, but also incompatibilities with some ROMs. Crystalis doesn't render correctly at all and Final Fantasy 1 also has issues.

Is there anyone who can report that the NES emulator actually works for them? For me it is basically unplayable. I am just trying to figure out if this is bad luck on my part, some program resource conflict, or if it is the same way for everyone. I really want it to work!

Yep it works. It's a bit tough to get use to the controls because you can't feel them but you can fix that with some clear plastic. Some games have issues but they are being corrected as time goes by.
I am using the 1.6.2

What? I'm still using version 1.4.0!!! Why didn't I automatically get the update?
Do you think I should delete it and re-download it or something?

They haven't been updated to installer.app for a bit. You will need to do a manual install.

You can just overwrite the app in your applications dir. You will get a "couldn't create the folder" error but that is because the folder is already there.

I couldn't install the 1.7.1 through iBrickr because the file format of the download wasnt pxl, so I installed 1.6.2 through iBrickr's installer, thinking it would still be an improvement. It seems to work better, but overall not very well. The sound is still very choppy, and overall the gameplay is like in slow motion.
Which games have you found that actually work perfectly?

Pacman, 1942, 1943, Contra, Metroid, Arkanoid, Defender, Castlevania, Galaxian, Galaga, and of course Mario Bro.
The biggest issue for me is the controls, I need some tactile response.
I will give 1.7.1 a go and see what happens.
*edit*
1.7.1 didn't fix my 1942 sound issues but it runs just as well. Maybe the new 339 cpu setting will help.

What's the 339 cpu setting do exactly? It seemed like it made it run smoother, but slower --but I think that I may be going insane and making that up as well..
All I know is that if my Tmobile Dash could play these games well, my iPhone should be able to as well!
Is it possible that the iPhone actually has less graphical power, since it wasn't designed to run windows and have 3rd party apps installed? Maybe they figured that the iPhone wouldn't need any flexible graphics processing power, since it has a dedicated chip (or so I thought I heard somewhere) for mp4 video?

Works on 1.7.1 and actually has worked well on all the versions. Maybe its just a corrupt install. I checked the settings as well and works in full screen mode as well as normal.
Sorry mate, maybe re-install it.

My Screen doesn't rotate, too :(. I have the brand new 1.8.0 version on it.
Maybe it's because of summerboard or any other extension? Should it word with all games?

What would be nice is a website or something with screenshots... I know when I see something from my era :o I'm like, "Hey I remember that game".
Maybe if we start a new thread or a website and we all just add in screenshots of whatever games we are playing...

Alright I have tried to get the roms to work on my iphone but I guess I must be doing something wrong. Anyways, I am trying to use the iShare program and I tried to upload a super mario brothers 3 rom and I thought I put it into the right folder which was done on the iphone itself......is that even right? Wow, this is easier to explain in my head but can anyone help out a noob, thanks.

@the people with the screen rotate problem: Just an idea, but you guys should try rotate your phones the other way round, I first thought that it wouldn't work for me too, but then I found out that in NES app rotation just works on one side :)

OK, so once you get beyond the initian installation and finding roms, is there ANYBODY that has this thing working 100% for any games at all? For myself, every game works sort of half-way, and the screen rotates just fine...
But the sound is only partly there --its sort of like a combination of an NES and a computer's built on motherboard speaker. It's definitely not all getting through.
And the gameplay is too slow, regardless of the "CPU setting" option, for every game. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the emulator, I have the newest version (1.9), and my roms worked fine back on my Dash.
Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong? Or is this just how it works for everyone?
