View Full Version : [Office Like] Just a Mock-up idea I'm working on

So, I got this idea in the middle of my Statistics class today. A slimmed-down version of Microsoft Office (just Word, Excel & PowerPoint) for the iPhone/ iPod Touch. The pictures speak for themselves in terms of what features I thought fit well with the iPhone/ iTouch GUI & setup. The pictures were easy to make, the video was a bit hard to pull off (required replacing Default.png & Icon.png from an app & using my built-in iSight to record it, hence the weirdness of it). But, overall, I think it came out pretty good. :)

This is good. I think some expert should join this guy and finish devloping this great app. It should be able to read offics files at the first version. then second version could go for editing files.

sounds great to me. I think this is one of those things that should have been created by microsoft.

Since the mail app can open word and excel files (don't know about ppt) maybe you should have a look into it.

This is the framework responsible
System/Library/Frameworks/OfficeImport.framework

This is the framework responsible
I opened OfficeImport in TextMate and found this:
doc
docx
xls
xlsx
ppt
pptx
com.microsoft.word.doc
org.openxmlformats.wordprocessingml.document
com.microsoft.excel.xls
org.openxmlformats.spreadsheetml.sheet
com.microsoft.powerpoint.ppt
I think the iPhone/iPod Touch can view documents in those formats & maybe edit those formats as well. We just need an app to make use of this framework

keep at it!!
Although I would watch out for 'legal' rights and use of the office name without M$'s consent.
It'd be sad to see a great idea go to crap because M$ gets suited up.
U could call it MiOffice Microsoft iPhone office lol.

There's already an issue of copyright here from EULA and other areas.
Microsoft would come down hard on this application in its current mock-up design format.
I think this is a wonderful idea and application. It's indeed something you'd of thought Apple Inc. and Microsoft would of collaborated on. Who knows they may well be doing that something like Entourage or such.
Highly likely once the SDK is out that Microsoft will develop their own third part productivity suite for the iPhone.
Until that day comes all I can say is amazing work, hope you find some experienced Obj C and Cocoa dev's out there dude.
Cheers,
Mark

yeah right, Microsoft developing apps for iPhone?? MS CEO laughs at iPhone... why do u think they'll develop anything for the iPhone, in fact they never will thats because they have their own windows mobile OS to develop

Did you mean debug ?
When i see how fast Apple did OS X 1.0 for its Mobile Devices, it's unlikely that MS will do anything for its challenger.

****WARNING****
It's just an idea at this point. No actual code is there. Just some mock up & some filetype tests I did. If people are interested in joining the project, just send me a message there.
****AGAIN, WARNING****
No code exists on the site yet. It is just an idea. Please do not assume that it is an actual app yet

I've got a "Project Goals" wiki page set up http://code.google.com/p/ioffice/wiki/ProjectGoalsTimeline
I'm gonna start coding some basic stuff once I can get the Toolchain properly installed which should be soon, hopefully. If Apple does announce an SDK on Tuesday that would allow for easy porting of "unofficial" apps to Apple's SDK then, I'm gonna move this to their SDK proabably.

this is an excellent idea!! The iPhone seems like a sweet device but I really NEED to be able to create/edit spreadsheets and save them right on the device, rather than to the web.
How is this progressing?

Couldn't agree with you more. I'm a long time WM user and I've seen versions after versions coming out with mostly cosmetic changes while the core OS remains.. well.. crap. There are however some amazing applications out there for WM like office applications from SoftMaker. Hopefully companies like these will eventually abandon WM and develop more for Apple's superior OS.

Sounds interesting for me because we, a small company in the netherlands, are building a sharepoint portal reader for the iphone. We called it iSharephone (http://www.isharephone.com). Would be great to also edit the documents instead of only viewing them....... maybe we should team or something?
