Oh my god, this app is AMAZING!!! works REALLY GREAT! seriously go get it now from installer

Ever wonder what that song is playing over the radio or on the go? Well now, with your iphone, just tap on the Listen app on your iphone, hold the fone up to your radio,speakers,w/e and wait. In a matter of SECONDS the iphone will find the song title, artist, and album!!

only didnt work to well when you try to find the song of a music commercial. also backround music where there is other noises other than the song comming out first

yeah it work on some songs. In some dont. I notice that if the volume is low, it cant recognize the song. But if you move it close to the speaker to make it loud, It got the info.

These feature i like in verizon phone before. Im glad i didnt buy it :))

Hold both the on/off-button and the home-button untill your screen goes black. Don't let go even if the apple logo comes back after around 10 seconds. Hold the buttons for about 30 seconds until the screen is completely black. Then start your iPhone again.

It also happen to me. It crash after maybe about 5 samples and 10 tries to get the song info. It crash and show up the apple logo. I just leave it for a minute then touch the screen. It reboot and everytings is fine again.

I have tried it on many songs now, but after "recording" the sample, the screen stays at "Finished recording. Contacting info server." Nothing more, nothing happens....

this is really not very usefull but if it controls iphone with sound it will be good. this software recognize voice and this can be used for running apps by calling them or putting a volice activated password for the iphone.

WOW this is simply mind blowing, wifey and me cannot believe it, I tuned a random radio searching for any song, launched the app with the phone close to the speaker and 5 seconds later I get the song. AMAZING

Reasonable question, but of course I am.

First: open a web site in safari -> ok
Then: open Listen while a song is playing placing the iPhone 1cm from the speaker...

Listen records but then nothing happens... still "Contacting info server."....

But I assume this happening because Listen cannot connect to a necessary server...

I agree that this app has implications for things like voice dialing, etc. One could also use the ID information to then take you to the iTunes storefront for purchase of the specific track. Could be a "piece of the action" for the identifier (server infrastructure) and referer (Listen app) for completed sales based on this referral.

Dollars to donuts we see this from AAPL in the spring. Of course, they'll make us pay for the app as well.

Anyone else having the same crashing experience.

Actually, I think they already have....songs that worked yesterday aren't working today with either version.

It caches 4-6 kB per request (in /var/root/Library/Caches/ListenApp). Total communication with the server is around 40 kB.

NOW, everything works GREAT - gives me info of everything I listen to, even norwegian odd songs - and no crashes!!!!

Also with options "Search iTunes" (for buying...)

This appears to be broken for 1.0.2 firmware, as suggested by a few users, and confirmed by me with Beta 3, which is now available from http://ericasadun.com/ftp/Applications/Listen/Listen-Beta-03.zip. It looks as though us 1.0.2 users are slowly being phased out.. ;)

Suggestions for the dev:
1) Have a 30s time out and display "unable to find" or the like if the song cannot be found.
2) Possibly display the cover art?
3) Perhaps have a frequency live monitor to see how strong the recording is?
4) A built in amp for low volumes.

Does everyone get the same message when hitting "Search iTunes", namely "This item cannot be accessed on your device"? I get that even with albums that are in the iTunes store when I access it directly.

Just to add to what I think is a really great app!

5) A "Start Listening..." button, once you're closer to the speakers, or waiting for some lyrics.
6) A "Try Again?" button to Listen again, rather than having to quit out the app and restart it.
7) As already mentioned by others, Double-byte character support for Asian languages. I know this is a far-fetched request, but fingers crossed you geniuses can figure it out!

Finally got it to work!! Had to play the music on a set of headphones and then put the iphone mic right up against the headphones!!

But amazing!! Hope this lasts....unlike the GPS-like thingy which used google's information on cell towers.....fingers crossed! :)

I upgraded to 0.3 beta today.
1) If a song is found the start listening button overlaps the song results box
2) No try again button if it fails
3) Possibly skin feature later on?

I finally gave up on 1.02 today, and virginized, restored to 1.1.1, and then unlocked. I'm back up and running and the Listen is working perfectly!

This app was the impetus for me to finally move on from 1.02. So far, I'm glad I did.

Topdog, I don't know much about the *sim solutions, but I think since you never used Anysim, your baseband is fine and you can simply upgrade manually to 1.1.1 and then jailbreak using the instructions on iphone.unlock.no. However, you should do some research and make sure that your sim is compatabile with 1.1.1. Probably is.

John74, I think the iphone.unlock.no guides are the best. However, I did have trouble moving from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1. I couldn't use the virginizer tool initially. It would not run on my phone. I was forced to restore to 1.1.1, which left me with the 0049 IEMI error. However, once in that state with 1.1.1, I was able to follow the guides on the site, jailbreak it, run the virginizer successfully, then restore again to 1.1.1. After that, jailbreaking was a snap including installing Anysim and then having iTunes recover my data.

I tried using SE's TrackID before on asian songs, but it would never work. I just tried this with any asian song and it works. It even works with really random asian songs..

Same with me, sometimes works well (at work with no wi fi) but seems to crash more at home with wi fi or edge.

The problem is that she was using the SonyEricsson Server by doing a fake request (iPhone to be treated as a a SE); Now she will us Gracenote service but she needs license for that.

Yes they did. But they only made it harder (not very hard, though ;) ), and I'm very sure it's not possible for them to block it completely without do changes on clients (their phones), and that won't happen. But i think erica want her app to be "legal".

I agree. It should be easy to spoof the request as coming from a SE phone. The problem is that the author might end up in trouble. But if Erica posted some sort of help on the code, someone might be willing to do it and post it "anonymously".

Plus, now my phone reboots at times as soon as I press the "Listen" button.....

And sometimes I get the mesage that this app is only for SE phones!

After talking to Gracenote, I have discovered several things. First, that their Track ID service is not available for noncommercial licensing. Second, that the costs for commercial licensing is beyond the amount to which I can possibly be committed to.

If you don’t mind spending $1 a shot, you can use your iPhone for music ID. Dial #43 (that is #ID). You won’t be charged for songs that the service fails to identify.
