[WiFi] Connected to wireless router, but no Internet.

Hi,

I'm trying to connect my iphone to my home wifi... The internet provider is clearwire and the wireless is created through a belkin 54g wireless access point. I've tried various settings for the wifi and the most recent one suggested (over on boards.ie) is:

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 85.134.188.223
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.192.0
Router. . . . . . . . . : 85.134.128.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 85.134.255.245


but still my wifi doesnt work. Everytime i try to connect it says it cant find the server. Any suggestions? I need to get it working asap so that i can install iworld on my phone and fix a problem i'm having - basically cant see any incoming calls!

PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!:confused: :(

Can you get another wifi device to connect to internet by using your router ?

The address you mentioned in your post is a public address. Aren't you with your home wifi network behind a router/firewall on a private subnet? (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x are commonly used) If you're trying to use a public address, your provider might not allow that unless your device's MAC address is in their "allowed" tables.
By the way, I tried to ping 85.134.188.223, and it's live and responding..., which means you are trying to take somebody's existing IP address. Nasty!

We cant get broadband in our area so we're using clearwire... We've a clearwire box in the house which gets the signal from a nearby satellite or something (think thats what the guy said) and then the belkin makes the connection wireless so that the pc and 2 laptops in the house can all use the net. I was logging onto the site on the pc so would that be why the ip address is active??? I've decided to just go and get a new router cuz it seems the belkin is the problem. Went to a friends house in the meantime, used their wifi and got iworld installed so that my phone is working at least!!!!

does your connection work if you plug your computer directly to the modem? if it works then you need to plug your router to the modem and then plug your computer to the router. tell your router to clone MAC address so the modem thinks its connected to a computer and not a router. some providers block known router MAC addresses, but you can just tell your router to pretend to be your computer. also check to see if your WAN IP is present. oh and no you cant STEAL someone else's IP address by just changing your IP address on your router. This just changes your local IP. If there is another computer with the same IP it will cause a conflict. Good luck.

I like to think of networking as my forte... anyway. From what I understand, you have a clearwire modem plugged into a Belkin router. I'm assuming other computers in your house are connected to the belkin via cat5 cable or wirelessly, in which case each of them is being assigned an IP from the router, not Clearwire. Normally, ip's for most brand name routers are 192.168.x.x . What you can do is either log into your router and find out, or just find the IP of another computer on your network and use it, only make it one grader or something. So if a computer is 192.168.0.3, on your iphone try 192.168.0.4 or something like that. Subnet mask is generally 255.255.255.0 . Router is going to be the IP of your router.. the belkin. It's probably 192.168.0.1 or 1.1 . For DNS, putting your routers IP again should work. Leave the rest and save it and try the connection on your phone.

Never mind.. just read that you got a new one and stuff. If you still need help setting up we're always here.

Yep i have the clearwire plugged into a Belkin access point - is this different to a router??? All the other computers in the house connect to the belkin wirelessly. I'm totally clueless about all of this to be honest, a friend of mine set up the belkin in the first place and he mentioned something about the mac addresses on the belkin but to be honest i've no idea what this means. I'll try your suggestion about changin the ip address of one of the computers already in the house later tonight when i get home. If that doesnt work i'll go ahead and buy a new router at the weekend.
