As the title say I have a theortical question. I presently have an American OTB 1.1.1 jailbroken and activated with jailbreakme.com and activated with anysim downloaded through installer. I am live in Germany but moving back to the states in about 10 days. I am going to sign up with AT&T when I get back by doing a quick restore and activating through iTunes. However, with the release of 1.1.3 soon I am wondering about comlete virginize route and having a legit iPhone. My question is will I have to virginize and if so would it be safe to do it now or wait till the dev team and other experts have more info. My nightmare scenario is to sign up with AT&T with my above technique of just a restore and then when I try to update 1.1.3 I brick it so bad that I have a touch but still paying on the contract. Thoughts?

sorry if my post is not clear. I have unactivated AT&T sim sitting in the box. I got the phone in early November, then I jailbroke and activated as described above and put my vodafone Germany chip in it. Now that I am going back (to D.C.) I am going to activate with AT&T because I have family using AT&T. My question is if I want to go to 1.1.3 when its released will I have virginize the baseband before upgrading the firmware. Thanks for th replies. I know that all the new features described with 1.1.3 i can get with 3rd party software, I am just wondering....

You'll have to virginize it before, but you must consider that it will update your phone and if one day you decide to quit AT&T, you won't be able to drowngrade/soft unlock it later.

If you have an OTB 1.1.1 phone, then I'd recommend selling it to someone who wants to have a BL 3.9 phone and getting yourself a brand new iPhone which will be OTB 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 (if you go legit, then who cares which it is) and you could easily make money from the transaction and would never have to worry about compatibility issues.
Though you'd also give away a BL3.9 phone so if you decide to leave the states again you can't reunlock it .... otherwise you could downgrade back to 1.1.1 or below, virginize and unlock, but not with a BL4.6 phone, though one never knows what's available then with regard to unlocking software :P

If he has a BL3.9 phone (which a OTB 1.1.1 should be), then why shouldn't he be able to downgrade and soft unlock it?

he means 1.1.3 cause as we know u can't downgrade from 1.1.3 and sure u can't unlock 1.1.3 Baseband...for now :)

thanks everyone for the info. Think I am going to wait until 1.1.3 comes out and see if there any must have features and then decide. If I do decide to sell it I will put it in the for sale area. Thanks again.

why shouldnt you be able to downgrade from 1.1.3 to 1.1.1 when you have bl 3.9? 1.1.3 doesnt upgrade the bootloader so as far i understand you are free to downgrade to a lower baseband or software as the exploit in 3.9 still exists (correct me if i'm wrong)

1.1.3 doesnt upgrade the bootloader
Where did you read that ?

I'n no expert on the area, but as far as i have read on this forum the bootloader is on a fixed read only memory, meaning the bootloader cannot be changed. So if you have an 3.9 bootloader OTB, it will allways be a 3.9..
But feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, but thats what i have understood reading this forum for some time.

as we know for now if u have a Locked iPhone and working with AT&T (never unlocked before) then u update to 1.1.3 with the new baseband right?
now if u downgrade to 1.1.2 or 1.1.1 (sure u have the new Baseband) ur iPhone will not be useable until u reupgrade to 1.1.3...
and until now we can't erase 1.1.3 baseband so u can't downgrade.
Note: This information from the guyz who have the leaked 1.1.3, things might change when the offical release.

Okay tonight I restored firmware...placed unactivated AT&T sim in and signed up. (I'm still in Germany). Everything loaded fine, got my plan. Put my vodafone.de chip back in (I did not virginize) and Different SIM error came up. Did some searching and discovered the lockdownd fix. Installed, everything works great. I am going to stick with 1.1.1 for now. Thanks for all your advice guys, I still look forward to seeing if my question is answered, guess we wont know until 1.1.3 is out.
