Which firmware do I have to use in the phonedmg to perform jailbreak after updating iphone to the new versions? can I still use the old firmware or I have to put the new firmware files in the iphonedmg? But if I put the new ones the files have different names...

I used the original Firmware dmg (1.0.0) in the phonedmg folder to do the hack. When I tried with the new firmware dmg (1.0.1), the jailbreak program didn't work.

I'm not sure what parts of the dmg jailbreak uses, but basically if you follow the exact same directions as you originally did, with all the same files you originally used, it will work.

So, to be clear, here's what I did:

1) Plugged in iPhone and upgraded the firmware through iTunes. This wiped the phone and installed 1.0.1 on it.

2) after update in iTunes, I quit iTunes when it was at the "get started with iPhone" screen.

3) proceded with the hack from http://www.hacktheiphone.com verbatim.

I am confused. You say jail break did not work after the update to 1.0.1; however you say before you proceeded with the hack you put 1.0.1 on it??? Also if you downgraded how did you do it?

Stormbringer is saying that they upgraded the phone to version 1.0.1 with iTunes but then had to use the 1.0 .dmg file in order for jailbreak to work.

So you have to make sure you download & extract the 1.0 file in the same directory as jailbreak. If you use the 1.0.1 .dmg file in the phonedmg folder with jailbreak, then the unlocking won't work.
