IPhoneInterface / get out jail question

I currently already have an at&t activated iphone.

I want to start doing some of these hacks (ringtone, custom apps).

My question is:

Since my phone is activated, do I need to do the get of jail step or can I just use directly the IPhoneInterface?

I prefer not to have to use get out of jail since my iphone is successfully activated.

Yes. Jailbreak gives you full access to the phone's filesystem. Without this step, you're stuck "in jail" where you only have access to the iPod Music Library and your camera photos.

Breaking jail will not affect your legit activation. Just make sure you do all the steps so that you can keep sync ability.
