View Full Version : iActivator v1.0 for Mac

From my post on the iPhone Dev Wiki:
---
iActivator is a Cocoa-based application for Mac which provides a nice interface for activating/deactivating your iPhone. It uses the method described here (http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_using_cingular_sim.html) to perform activation. However, it doesn't rely on any external programs and does everything in one application.
NOTE: This program will not unlock your SIM, it only activates your phone so that you can use it without having to set up an account with AT&T.
[EDIT: Updated to version 1.1.4]
The current version is 1.1.4 (released August 2nd, 2007). It's a universal binary and has been tested on both PPC and Intel. It's also been tested with iPhone firmware versions 1.0 and 1.0.1.
It can be downloaded from here (http://tinyurl.com/2cgnc5)
Here's a screenshot of it in action:
http://dialectro.com/images/iActivator.jpg
The README.txt file included with it is very thorough, so please read that first before asking any questions.
Note that as of version 1.0.3, iActivator uses the same PEM files that iASign uses. Previous versions did not.
Also note that as of version 1.1.1, iActivator is under the GPL and includes full source code.
Lastly, note that the way jailbreak is done in version 1.1.1 and higher is incompatible with the way it's done in previous versions. So if you have a phone which is jailbroken with a version prior to that, return it to jail and then jailbreak it again with the newer version.
0p
Update: I have successfully compiled the phone interaction code on Windows and tested it with a command-line version of iActivator (it's in the source code), but jailbreak doesn't work.

The current version is 1.0 (released July 23rd, 2007). It's a universal binary, so it should work on PPC and Intel Macs (though it's only been tested on Intel).
It can be downloaded from http://**********.com/files/44662351/iActivator_v1.0.dmg.html (replace the *s in the URL with Rapid Share)
PS. Yes, I do have plans to port it to Windows, but it's not high on my priority list at the moment (I want to play with the new toolchain first).
Very Bloody Nice !!! Well done and thanks !!
Something missing though...the UNLOCK BUTTON !!!!:D :D :D :D

if this jailbreak works for PPC macs, I will attempt a backflip and post it on youtube.
EDIT: Tried it a few times, and the application crashes while doing the jailbreak (the screen showing the jail cell pic). Upon relaunching it, it doesn't see the phone and I have to restart it and relaunch the app to try again. I assume this is because I'm on a PPC Mac.
getting a file not found..but thanks

Very Bloody Nice !!! Well done and thanks !!
Something missing though...the UNLOCK BUTTON !!!!:D :D :D :Dhaha, yes... straight from my TODO list (seriously):
- Create a "dummy" mode where everything is done automagically
There's so many steps involved that it's hard to put everything in one. Because if one step fails, then everything goes wrong and you have to start over again.

Sweet. Activation & Jailbreak worked very nicely. If I may suggest a feature... automatic file upload (ie... ringtones, icon, ssh, busybox etc)
Very nice work indeed. I vote to make this the "official" iphone hacking interface :)
Now to just sync this puppy.
Question: When I power my phone up it says it's waiting for AT&T to activate. Why? I don't get the "invalid sim" message... Just curious- I'll probably answer that question myself after a good night's sleep.

ok, thanks for the report. I'll drop it on my G5 iMac and see what's going on.
Just tested a jailbreak on my PPC Mac and I get the same result. A crash when it gets to the part where all of the text is scrolling down the screen (restore mode). And it doesn't look like something easy to fix.
It's too bad because, at that point, if you had a way to pass commands to the phone, you could easily finish the jailbreak by hand.
Anyways, the good news is that activation (once you have the PEM file on your iPhone) and deactivation do work.
So the official word is that it doesn't fully work on PPC yet.

Question: When I power my phone up it says it's waiting for AT&T to activate. Why? I don't get the "invalid sim" message... Just curious.I get this too. You see it every time you start up an activated iPhone which isn't registered yet on the AT&T network. It's to tell people who have activated their iPhone for the first time that they need to wait for AT&T to register them.
You won't see it again unless you power down your iPhone and restart it, so no need to worry about it too much.
The reason you don't get an invalid SIM message is because you do have a valid SIM in your iPhone from the time you buy it. The activation process doesn't do anything with the SIM to make it valid/invalid. It's something entirely separate.
very nice app. thank you...... it will be even nicer if it can do the full unlock as well :D :D :D

ok, I just updated it to version 1.0.1 because I found a way to get rid of the stream of boot output when performing a jailbreak (as cool as it looks, it's unnecessary). I also got rid of some debugging output. The download link in my original post (and on the Wiki) has been updated.

Please note that you may need to jailbreak twice even if it says it's successful the first time.
If it's truly successful, you'll see the word "jailbroken" in the little status bar at the bottom. Otherwise it didn't work.

How come that after I did jailbrake and activated my iPhone I only have 170mb and 99mb available on my iPhone ?(in iTunes).
With the DVDJonmethod I had all 4GB available.

Does this just activate it so you can use the ipod features of the iphone or do you use this utility to activate pre-paid AT&T cards?

I get to here...
7) Press the "Activate iPhone" button to activate your phone. When prompted to select a file, choose the file that you saved in step 4.
and I'm not sure what to select, nothing was saved in step 4?
I tried the .plist that I saved and it just says "Activation failed with a code 0"

I tried the .plist that I saved and it just says "Activation failed with a code 0"ok, so I'm assuming that all the other steps worked and that you can see the word "jailbroken" at the bottom?
If so, then you probably just need to quit and restart the program and try again. This happens a lot (not sure why).

with this method, do we need to jailbreak again if we want ssh on it or change ringtones afterwards? If you use the "Return To Jail", then yes. Otherwise, if you leave your phone jailbroken, then you'll be able to put ringtones on just fine (using another tool of course).
I have a PPC verion of jailbreak from http://www.wotan.org/jailbreak11.zip.Yes, I'd very much love to have had the source for that program when I was creating mine. Maybe I will hop on IRC and try to find the author. :)

P.S. I also get Activation Error 0. I actually tried 2 sim cards, the AT&T which gave me that error, as well as my China Mobile also gave me the same, even though I generated the 2 different codes etc. I am assuming its either A. Obviously Because I activated already with the itunes hack. or B. because I'm on a PPC

I have a PPC verion of jailbreak from http://www.wotan.org/jailbreak11.zip.have you tried this on PPC? it doesn't work (segmentation fault). it doesn't even get as far as mine does in the jailbreak process (which is a good thing, because then you don't need to do a restore on your phone).

For an "easy to use" program ... this APP sucks.
Once I get to activate (after going through the tedious long list of other steps TWICE) ... I am asked to located the save file created in step 4. THERE IS NO FILE THAT WAS SAVED.
Fix your program, because it blows donkey balls.

No, did not try it on PPC, but some guy going by the name of "bd" was talking about it on #iphone and telling that it worked on his PPC. So i copied the link and waited to hear if anybody else had succes. So, I hope you find Ziel, in order to get the source. The devs pretend like all the mac population is on intel...and rather make intel only instead of universal. So we keep waiting then ;) BTW, way cool that you make a GUI and make things easier for the non technical guys among us ;)

His grammar isn't the issue. The message he wished to convey came through loud and clear.
Some people are working very hard to provide an ease of use for others. It is your prerogative to use this pgm. If does not meet your standards pls cease using it.
I for one am very appreciative of the work that went into this pgm. I have not used it, but am well aware that a great deal of time and effort was expended. This is the case with all that is shared on this forum.

Be nice, both of you, or else you'll be sent home with a note to mommy.
Can you imagine working hard on a free contribution to the iphone community only to be berated for it?
This is an INTERNATIONAL forum. Not every user speaks "Amaracan" like you. When your contributions exceed this one, cast as many stones as you feel you can throw. Until then, kindly refrain from nastiness.
Remember: Your alternative is to not use this solution.
Although iActivator has some bugs in it, it's still of great value. I tested it myself last night, and the first time I ran it (following the instructions carefully) it failed. I did manage to get it to work in the end though.
I'm sure The Operator put a lot of work and thought into it, and the greater majority of iphorumites appreciate this effort, and look forward to future enhancements, corrections and additions.

ah, ok, i see the problem. The file was generated in step 6 of the instructions. I'll fix the README.
Fix your program, because it blows donkey balls.Have some respect for the hard work everyone is putting in. Just because I made a mistake in the README, it somehow gives you the right to be a dick? Grow up.

There, I just fixed the README in version 1.0.3 (latest release).
I wonder if anyone can help. I get to the stage where it asks of IMEI and ICCID. I can find the IMEI # but my phone field for the ICCID is blank. Any suggestions?
By the way. Irrespective of the programme being 'perfect' we should all be grateful for the FREE efforts being undertaken for our collective benefit!

I op that you label the topic properly as MAC covers both PPC and Intel, please note in your docs that this works on INTEL Mac only.
Thanks.

David- the ICCID number is on the box, but if yours is blank it's also on the sim card.

First off, well done and thanks to The Operator. Even though iActivator does NOT work on my iMac G5 (PPC) I am grateful that there are people out there who are trying to make life easy for others.
If it helps sort out getting iActivator to work on a PPC, the program crashes and quits on my machine after the "waiting for jailbreak" screen appears. I cannot get past this stage.
I can activate the iPhone with the Anderson method but I'd like to jailbreak and be able to mod other things. I haven't yet tried one of the longer methods - a bit nervous of leaving my iPhone as a brick!
Hi, Guys:
I just thinking if all these unlock ways have the iTunes version requirement.
If I have a updated iTunes 7.3.1 for Mac, Do I have way to unlock?
If so, where can I find old version iTunes for Mac to re-install?
Please Help

I am using iTunes 7.3 (54) and have not upgraded to latest as it doesn't work with the Anderson method (or so I believe)
That's too bad!
Anyone got solution for those already updated to iTunes 7.3.1 for Mac?
Where to get 7.3.0.54 DMG?
I should never updated !

I can't get it to work. I tried the long way (using Terminal).... I get this:
Enjoy your newfound freedom. Thank the devs at #iphone next time you see them for making this all possible.
p.s. Like most other useful tools, this one may be dangerous if used carelessly. Always remember -- You brick it, you bought it.
p.p.s. I have no idea how 'My Humps' could possibly have gotten set as your ringtone. ;)
This appears to be a positive message. :) But not sure what to do now. My phone is still locked up with the screen it gives out of the box.
I have the newer iTunes. I guess I'll try the iActivator fancy pants method again. IDK what else to do unless someone has a suggestion. I appreciate everyones efforts here BTW.

I got it to work via the program. I got hung up with selecting the plist section where it gave an Error of "Code 0", but I simply quit the program, re-opened, and picked up where I left off and this time it worked.
Thanks for this...... Now, patiently waiting for YouTube. :)

thanksss!!No, sorry, it doesn't work on PPC Macs (G4, G5). Performing a jailbreak will crash and then you'll need to restore your iPhone.
AFAIK, there's no program which can perform a jailbreak on PPC Macs right now. You'll just have to wait (or find a friend who's got an Intel Mac).

By the way, great program. But I noticed somethings I wanted to mention.
After using iActivator to break from jail (works good) and then put back in jail I got this error.
"iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone "XXX". Got o the Summary tab in the iPhone preferences and lick Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings."
It happened after returning to jain with iActivator 1.1 (i think thats the latest one)
One thing I want to add, after I saw that error I did a iPhoneinterface and saw it was not really in jail. I had the full files system? But iActivator said it retuned successfully??
So I tried to put the Services.plist back in the /System/Library/Lockdown
I got this error.
iPhone:/System/Library/Lockdown/# putfile Services.plist
Problem with AFCFileRefOpen: 1
I ended up forcing the phone into restore and starting over.
There are a couple others who have recently mentioned the same problem on the board. Just wanted to let you know.

Just updated to version 1.1.1 which now includes the full source code (GPLed). This version fixes the problem where, when jailbroken, the phone appears to have only a small amount of storage space in iTunes (thanks iZsh). So feel free to leave your phone jailbroken if you like. :)

The Operator, let me tell you something... I just bought the iPhone with no plan because I knew about this mod and I thought... fuck it, I'll buy it.
I think I'm not the only one, and Apple should thank you for those extra sales...
Eventually I will get a prepaid plan, but I don't want a 2 years contract with that company.
Did I say thanks for let me unleash this monster?... thanks again.
Now... here is my bitching ;) ... just bug report.
I successfully get to work the iPhone with iActivator 1.0
But there is no references to what expect, I got this:
-Wi-Fi (yes)
-Safari (yes)
-Google Maps (yes)
-Camera Phone (yes)
-Stocks (yes)
-Youtube (no)
-iPod sync (yes)
-iPod playback (no)... no files availables
-iPhoto sync (no)
-Space available 90MB available! (with the 8gigs version)
Now, I see you fix the space problem with iActivator 1.1,
I did a restore with iTunes to the factory defaults to start from zero again.
But I cant do step 5 ("Put PEM File") with iActivator 1.1 because the button is disable.
So finally I try everything and nothng... I'm back with iActivator 1.0 just to try wi-fi browsing applications.
I hope you'll get some solutions or something than I'm doing wrong.
Thanks
oviuan

This is what I did to make it work.
-Restore to factory defaults trough iTunes
-Download again iPhone1,1_1.0_1A543a_Restore.ipsw (some how something change when you do things with iActivator... right?)
... I have 7.23 GB available :)
,,, and iPod is working perfectly !
thanks.

So since this program, iactivator, uses the same files in iasign, does that mean that you can use old cingular/att sim cards in the phone? or do you have still have to go through the long process with iasign and terminal commands, etc..?

Just released version 1.1.2.
This version adds a new (requested) feature -- the ability to backup the activation file from your phone onto your computer. Something handy for people who have activated their phone legitimately and don't want to have to deal with calling AT&T to get their activation back when they perform a restore from iTunes.

When will the windows release be available?I have someone working on the UI right now. However, jailbreak still doesn't work on Windows, which is the big holdup.
I reversed the Windows version of jailbreak from Ziel, and the code where iActivator crashes is identical to his (right down to the assembly), so I'm at a bit of a loss as to why mine crashes and his doesn't.
Anyways, no idea when that will be fixed. Most of the #iphone devs have moved way past activation at this point so it's tough to get help.
It's the first time that I see more programs for Mac than win... World is changing!!!

From the Changelog:
v1.1.4 - 08/02/07
- Added backwards compatibility with older jailbreak method. This allows iActivator to properly detect phones which have been jailbroken using iFuntastic instead of iActivator
- Removed -p option from afc2 service for compatibility with iPHUC
- Got rid of custom MobileDevice.h header file so that stock version on Wiki can be used (and I don't have to distribute it with the source code)
- Fixed a bug in the Windows code (still not working 100% yet though)

Hi,
Would this program work on a "powerbook G4"? When I attempt to launch the program, the icon pops up in the dock and then vanishes again??? I can see in the original post that it is ppc compatible, but the author says he tested it on his G5... Would a G4 be different?
To be honest, I've only just received my iphone (in UK) and this is my first effort to activate it. I don't really know the best way to go about it - but this program looks good. I have a windows PC and this little 12" G4 powerbook. If this program doesn't work, what are my options?

2. Start iActivator
3. Perform Jailbreak (select your current firmware directory)
4. Click the Put PEM option
5. Click the Generate Activation option (enter in your info, and save .plist file)
6. Click the Return to Jail option
7. Restart iPhone (I know, I know, not activated yet, this done after reboot)
8. Start iActivator after iPhone is back up.
9. Click Activate iPhone option (select your previously created .plist file)
10. Your phone should not change to "Activating". Restart iPhone
11. Done

Hi everyone and sorry if my first post here sounds stupid but here I go:
I bought an iPhone yesterday and downloaded iActivator.
I am however confused as to which firmware version file to download from Apple's website in order to complete the steps that lead to activation.
I have iTunes 7.3.2 installed on my PPC Powerbook G4. My iPhone has never been connected to my computer so far...
How can I check the firmware version of my iPhone?
Or does the fact that it has never been connected to my computer mean that it has the older firmware?
Should I connect it and launch iTunes in order to update the firmware prior to activating it with iActivator?
Thanks for your help!
