I have the att sim, I use it I'm not interested in using a different carrier, I just want to be able to third party apps back in.
I have searched high and low any advice on this issue will be greatly appreciated, I even throw in a $5 reward (paypal) to someone who can help me get my phone back up to snuff:
Here is the status. Bought phone with 1.02 -> put installer.app on had everything running great for about a month then things started acting poor, a lot of crashing etc...
So I downloaded the iPhone1,1_1.02_1c28_Restore.ipsw.zip file put my phone in to recovery mode, and restored with the above file.
Now I have what seems to be a normal iPhone. With 1.02 running...
NOW the problem
When I try to install apptappinstaller it gets about have way? through and fails with a bootstrap error... ( I could try and install it a third time if someone really needs the console log errors, let me know if they are needed)
I can't viginize it because I don't know how to ssh to the phone without installing something one the phone
I'm scared to upgrade, for fear of bricking the phone...
If most third party apps are useable on 1.1.1 them I'd like to get there too.
Thanks in advance,
iriedodge
(AS FAR AS THE REWARD - if someone is able to solve my problem completly, I guess PM me and after I'll post the resulots here for anyone who may have a similar issue)
Ready, Set, Go

i thought you needed to jailbreak, and put ssh into the phone to install anything

I am assuming you don't need any activation hacks since you have a legitmate contract with ATT, you just want to jailbreak it.
STEP ONE: Upgrade to 1.1.1
Option/ALT-key (Mac) when clicking the Restore button in itunes, and it will let you choose firmware file. Download the 1.1.1 firmware here (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3883.20070927.In76t/iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw).
STEP TWO: Jailbreak 1.1.1
Activate with iTunes normally. After you are done, open mobile safari and go to jailbreakme.com. And follow the instructions to install appsnapp. For a visual guide, watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IylzCx2wRo) starting from minute 3:35.
Good luck.
