So I am about to drive to an Apple Store to purchase my Iphone. However I have T-Mobile and I cannot switch to AT&T no matter what.

Can I be sure, by looking at the serial number before I pay, that I am buying an old bootloader Iphone and not an Iphone with the new bootloader?

I am aware of the fact that the new bootloader is currently non-unlockable...

From this very long post here: http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15372&highlight=%22bootloader+version%22

it seems that I would be only safe with < 42 Iphones?

Can I be safe with < 43 Iphones?

Thanks for any help!!!!

EDIT: I am assuming that I can always return the Iphone to the AppleStore if I take it home, run bbupdater -v and find out that it has the new bootloader. Can anyone confirm that? But It would be very desirable to have a 99% trustworthy method to tell in the store, before buying, whether the iphone has the new or old bootloader.

Thanks again!

2 quick facts:

- You will only know phone serial number after seller finishes his/her procedures, which means you'd already bought it and they already marked this serial number as sold. Maybe if you ask them to chose one box... lol

- If you open the phone's box, theres a fee you pay if wishing to be refunded. From the invoice:
iPhone, 8GB
Part Number: MA712LL/A
Serial Number: 7V7451XXXXX
$ 399.00
Warranty effective through Nov. 15, 2008
Return Date: Dec. 01, 2007
$ 39.90 fee if opened
For Support, Visit: - APPLE.COM/SUPPORT

Only way to be sure is by getting an really old phone (like week 40 or before) but you still need to check its box first. There are some reports of people with 41+ and BootLoader 4.6.

I assume I can ask to see the box and the serial number before a buy. This should be a consumer right I would think so...

Take your chances. Its up to you to ask, and up to him to answer.

I think that the reports about 41 and 42 with new bootloader are imprecise, meaning false-positives.

41 and 42 should be safe to have the old bootloader, otherwise it is a refurbished phone and in that case I should demand a free exchange from Apple.

I am assuming that anything <= 43 should have the old bootloader. Anybody disagrees?

That sucks big time! So for every new Iphone potential user, it comes down to a roulette game!

Unless the community is able to come up with the unlock for the new bootloader.

I guess I will keep checking here: http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dgzw9xs_0gfhxns

If yes, please tell me where!

Serial number won't guaranty you the old fw. Proof : just bought a new sealed iphone yesterday at att. It'sa week 40 but with 1.1.2 fw

No my friend! Fw 1.1.2 does NOT mean new bootloader.

You have to run bbupdater -v to check your the booloader version. Have you done that? If not, then you cannot be sure that 1.1.2 means new bootloader, can you?
