View Full Version : UK iPhone + SIM from other "default operators"

Hello everybody,
I acknowledge that it has been proven successful to use any O2 sim card with the UK iPhone, after going through the jailbreak/activation/etc... procedure.
In some posts it is mentioned that the trick also works with German iPhones, allowing to use any T-Mobile SIM.
I was wondering: does this trick allow to use any SIM from the default operators (US AT&T, UK O2, DE T-Mobile, FR Orange, IT TIM) on any iPhone? Or does it only work within the country where the iPhone was purchased?
Has anyone tried, let's say, to go through the procedure and then use a UK iPhone with a German T-Mobile sim, or with an Italian TIM?
Thanks in advance for any contribution...

The firmware is the same regardless, though a new bootloader may be present on newer phones, regardless of where they're bought. Thus to answer your question yes. My US iPhone works fine with an O2 SIM, i.e. it recognises all the defaults, etc.

Is this really true ?? So the phones are not locked specifically to the region ??
I have 2 US 1.1.2 and all my family are on o2 .. I can activate them and use them ??
If this is the case that is so sweet..

Thank you for the reply,
has anyone actually tried to do this? (eg. putting a US/german/french/italian authorized sim from a default operator into a UK iPhone?)

I'm not sure if it's really what your asking but i tried an Irish O2 sim in the UK iPhone that was jailbreaked and activated and it didn't work.

@ChrisUK86 and nikimere.
I think what the OP is asking is if an O2 UK sim will work in a US phone not if a O2IE/other UK sim will work in a UK phone.
Each network and each country has their own network IDs.
O2 UK is 234 /10
but O2 IE is 272 /02
and Orange UK is 234 /33
Now, if the software for the phones is allowing O2 UK sims in any iPhone, it will only accept O2 sims with the MCC (for that network) of 234/10. A O2IE/OrangeUK will not work in any of them.
So, your sims will not work. Would be nice to confirm fully if an O2 sim will work in any iPhone. I have two on their way from O2 (nice and free) and will confirm in my US iPhone once I lock/restore it.

That is exactly what I was trying to find out.
OF COURSE Orange UK sims or O2 Irish sims won’t work; they are NOT default operators!
What I’m trying to figure out is if SIMs of these operators (and ONLY these) will work on ANY iPhone with 1.1.2:
- O2 UK
- Orange FRANCE
- T-Mobile DE
- Tim ITALY
- AT&T US
Or if, on the other hand, there is some sort of regional setup that limits the functioning only to the specific country operator.

This is correct. Do not know why people in this thread are talking about non UK O2 and other providers. Put O2 UK SIM into iPhone US and iTunes 7.5 had no issue activating it with an account for O2 instead of AT&T. Further if you JB and activate and use an O2 UK card there's no reason to create symlinks as it's ready to go, even on a US phone.

Can you actually interchange the sims as you like (like swap between O2 and AT&T), or you have to re-activate for the specific operator every time?
I'm asking this because I travel a lot between European countries, and it would be handy to be able to swap the sims every time I land in a different place, using the local authorised operators (be it UK, France, Germany or Italy).

Tiger_rule, did you try it? Let us know...
Anybody can tell me if it is possible to freely swap the sims (O2 and AT&T, for example) or if it is necessary to go through the activation process every time?
Thank you!

It would be great news!!!!
Let me summarize:
I buy an UK or US iPhone with 1.1.2 on it. I activate and jailbreak it with the software of the dev team and I can use any of following SIM cards?
- O2 UK
- Orange FRANCE
- T-Mobile DE
- Tim ITALY
- AT&T US
Is it correct??

Apparently, this should be correct.
However, there is still not exhaustive feedback regarding this issue...

Great thread!
This is exactly what I was trying to figure out in this thread:
http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?p=122747#post122747
Please let us know. If this is possible many of us can switch to one of the default operators and port the number with us. This way we get the best if both worlds.
Cheaper iPhone and better chances of updating it as and when the Apple firmware updates are released.

I did the jailbreak and activation with another italian sim card (WIND - hoping it would work...), and then I tried the TIM card

Probably that's why it didn't work... As I was mentioning in another post, it could be worth trying to restore the iPhone and do again all the jailbreak/activation with the TIM sim...
If you have time to do it, let us know!

Probably i miss something, don't understand what u mean with "activation" with TIM sim...i didn't think jailbreak-activation was a sim-dependent procedure... In other forums however i read that UK iphones can be jailbreaked-activated only to be used with a O2 sim...apparently USA-UK-DE phone are different and are stucked with the national provider.

I bought an iPhone in the UK on Sunday and activited it with jailbreak etc. It works fine as an iPod touch, but gives the message "Incorrect SIM. This phone must be used with an approved SIM" when I put in my German t-mobile SIM (pre-paid not contract).
(The same thing happens with my German O2 SIM.)

please have a look here (http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=16627&page=2)
The german guy did it with US 1.1.2 OOB
With his t-mobile IPHONE-CARD (with exclusiv tmobile contract) then he wanted to try activate the phone with iTunes. It has been shown that with the mobilenumber an iPhone has been allready activated.
Then took a tmobile-sim(normal contract) from a guy in his work ,pluged the phone to the pc and itunes showd the ativate screen, but the guy didnt want to pay so much. (so he still did not activate the US iPhone)
Thereafter he downgraded his still-locked 1.1.2 iPhone to 1.1.. He uses a tut from this board! doThen he installed OCtropPrep with the installer. Then updatet to 1.1.2 and jailbreaked it.
So then he had a jailbreaked 1.1.2 iPhone. AND ANYSIM WASNT USED
Since then work ALL TMOBILE SIM CARDS WORK!!!
means, you have to downgrade to 1.1.1, used octoprep to jailbreak from 1.1.1 and to prepare jailbreak on 1.1.2 - then updated to 1.1.2 and jailbreaked it (he used this guide (http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15567) for that)

I have read one report from another forum of someone trying an O2 SIM in a hacked US 1.1.2 phone (i.e new version, new bootloader, no SIM unlock) and it didn't work. It looks as if there is a lock to the individual network's SIM cards.

I personally think this is possible, but no-one has really taken the time to look into it properly.
I currently reside in the UK and have a US iphone (OTB 1.1.2).
Im sure if I had a copy of the file-system from a UK OTB 1.1.2 I could run a compare to work out what changes are different between the 2 phones.
I don't think the Baseband has anything to do with this problem... Although I could be wrong.
Cheers
Decks.
Yes, I am doing exactly this, 02 payg sim, Contract iphone jailbreak and activated via hack
However, data does NOT work.
even with payasyougo apn settings.

Yes, well im sure someone must have tried and gone into detail. Does anyone know if it can work or has anyone tried different methods? DecksTerrorT see if you can get a compare for both of the phones so we can see where exactly the problem lies?
Also, does anyone have any advancement for the unlocking for all sims of 1.1.2, are we near an unlock being available or any news?
Thanks

Hi all
just tried to use my OTB 1.1.2 UK iPhone with a german T-mobile Sim. The iPhone has been jailbroken and activated using the already well known method (downgrading to 1.1.1 - jailbreakme - octoprep - update to 1.1.2 - jailbreak 1.1.2). Verdict: it doesn't work. Just says incorrect sim. Any ideas what I'am doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

@stonefred: Thanks for your reply. I think I was a bit too brief in my post yesterday. When I insert the german T-Mobile SIM a message box appears indicating that SIM is locked. When I hit the "Unlock" button the keypad pops up and I can enter my PIN. After I've entered my PIN followed by "Return", I get the message box "Incorrect SIM - Please use SIM of approved provider".
But anyway, I'll try the method you suggested, although I guess it won't make any difference. I will let you know.

thank you. Please check this thread (http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=16627&page=2).
the guy told us, that he did the procedure several times until he got it to work. He states, that an already activated iPhone T-Mobile SIM has to be inside and 1st activation to be tried with iTunes until the Error Message appears. (UK-Customers are able to use US iPhones, so I am sure the Default Providers are saved in 1.1.2 Firmware - 1.1.2 globally appeared together with presence of iPhone in Germany). After success Messages from other ppl I do not believe, that you need a SIM card with iPhone contract - a SIM from the Network you want to use should be enough.

I am still following this partucalr topi c with great interest.
Has anyone been able to bypass activation on a US iPhone 1.1.2 OOB new bootlader with a O" sim card inside so that the phone later could be used with the UK O2 sim card? (O2 UK is the default carrier in the UK).
Or, is there something different between the US and the UK that we just don't know?
I say this as I know it is possible to bypass activation on a UK O2 iPhone and then use it with a O2 PAYG sim card and avoid paying the high charges.
Please let me know or if anyone with a 1.1.2 US iPhone OOB and a UK O2 sim card.
Thanks
