Unlocking Concerns

You still cant unlock N Series phones from Nokia.

I have an N70 for over a year and the ONLY way to unlock is by the provider. None of the online unlockers can provide codes for the N series phones.

I wonder if Apple have used the same security with the iPhone.

my same concern... right here in my office, still brand new in the box *two years later* i have a Sharp 705SH phone from japan. when i bought it, everyone on the forums said the unlock was just "right around the corner"... its still sitting here taunting me w/ the "unknown SIM" error to this day.

long-time lurker, just registered today as i have been waiting for word of an unlock myself to come along, been holding off on buying one to sit on as i just don't trust that everything is unlockable these days.

on a side note, does anyone this that there is a possibility that even if an unlock is developed, it will only work on the initial launch version of the iPhone? i could see them patching whatever hole is found on later models to hamper us that don't want to use ATT... thats the main thing that has me torn about buying one now or sitting it out and waiting for an unlock method..

I agree with you guys, not everything is unlockable.
But with the IPhone there is so much hype around it, that I belive the hackers will just go the extra mile to unlock it.

everything is unlockable with the given determination/time/resources :) but well, agreed that apple i believe knows the hype already long b4, so it gives me an impression that the critical data/database regarding the unlocking info viceversa will be secured safely... :) somewhere it is said that there is 1024bit rsa certificate/password :) unlocking that code wont be too easy unless here dev team, writes a program to crack the code that each member can use their own systems for different parts of the code... coz it requires a supercomputer to hack that kind of passwords, and imagine that the dev team can spread the load of cracking the password/certificate with say 1000 people will give a similar super computer effect, double or trible the number better the chance??

Well... If they need a Super computer... My self and some friends i know will be willing to join an @home team and put every thing we have for this. The combined load of all of us is about 30PS3s, 90+ windows machines, and 40+ Macs. Not to mention the other misc machines we have lying around.

Put it this way, the person or persons who unlock the iPhone will be remembered for a long time to come. Plus think about it, they're going to be wanted by every security specialist firm on the planet to work for them.

Someone will definitely crack it.

many people/ experts i m sure trying to hack to unlock the system... but think of a 5yr contract on AT&T i m sure they must have coded the part about simlock very tight... someone? will crack it but it wont be easy as one person... i think and believe...

remember the note about 3g phones esp nokia n series, have not been cracked with know n methods yet?

i think as a noob idea there are two options?
1) find someone who works at apple access to this 1024 bit rsa keys... :) j/k
2) write a program that will attemp to hack the key, but on many computers with a central database connection...

Possible? I am not a pro programmer but i know there are example programs used in cancer research :) alien life form research :)

It is not as high as Nokia, but still because the baseband 'sits' behind another CPU,
it is not very likely that pure software solution will come out anytime soon. At best
some specialized HW equipment will be needed and the phone have to opened, I
guess this will put off many people. I know because one of my phones i opened
looks like crap now, even i was extremely careful.

And N series are unlocable, but with very fast FPGA listening the communication between
the CPU and the Flash and modifying the instructions on the fly. Still requires TPs
and opening of the phone (as do most Siemens do).

But because of the fuzz is really high, lets hope some extremely talented guy
find an implementation bug and give a miracle solution.
