Hi folks,

This guide was primarily made for Mac users with UK iPhones, (Running 1.1.2) but will work on other iPhones running 1.1.2.The process itself shouldnt take any longer than fifteen minutes (tops!), this is excluding the time taken to download files etc.. so dont worry. Again, if you see any errors in the guide, or would like to add some comments, or feel that you havent been credited, please find me on IRC.. Here goes:

Step 1 - Downgrade to 1.1.1

1) Download the 1.1.1 ipsw. (Click Here (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3883.20070927.In76t/iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw)) Make sure it ends in _Restore.ipsw!

2) Make sure your iPhone is switched on. Hold the power button & home button for
10 seconds. Once the 10 seconds are up, let go of the power button
ONLY!!. Do not let go of the home button! (Basically, keep holding the
Home button)

Your iPhone screen should be blank at this stage. (If there is an iTunes logo &
dock cable on the iPhone screen, you're not in DFU mode, and you need to
repeat the procedure!!)

3) Launch up iTunes. It'll say your iPhone is in restore mode. Press & hold the apple
key + alt key, then click on the restore button. A window will popup, now locate
the downloaded 1.1.1 ipsw file, and press OK.

4) iTunes will now begin restoring your iPhone to 1.1.1, this will take a few minutes
so wait patiently.

5) You will then get an error: 'The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error
occured (1015)' DONT PANIC! This is good lol! It means you've successfully
restored to 1.1.1, proceed to step 6.

6) Download INDependance (Click Here (http://code.google.com/p/independence/)), and load it up. (Make sure iTunes is not running)
A few seconds later, it should kick the iPhone out of restore mode. (The iPhone
should restart here) You can close INDependance now.

Step 2 - Jailbreak 1.1.1:

1) Slide the emergency lock.
2) Dial *#307#
3) Press the back button to clear the number you just dialed, then press 0. Press
Dial again.

4) Press accept call, then press hold, then press deny.
5) You're now in the contact list! Horray lol, keep going.
6) Create a new contact with;

i) The first url: prefs://11
ii) The second url: http://www.jailbreakme.com

7) Make sure to save the contact, then press back. You'll now be back on the
original page. (Slide for emergency)

8) Slide the emergency lock. Press 0, accept call, hold, then finally deny.
9) Select the contact, and choose the first URL. (prefs://11)
10) You should now be taken to the settings page. Go set up a WiFi connection.

11) Once you've done that, press the home button, and you're back to the original
screen.
12) Slide the emergency lock, press 0, accept call, hold then finally press deny.
13) Select the contact, now choose the second url. (jailbreakme.com)

14) Hopefully if you had set up your wifi settings correctly, safari should have loaded
up the jailbreakme.com webpage. Scroll down, and select Install AppSnap.

15) Safari should now close automatically! LEAVE YOUR IPHONE! Dont touch
it lol, as it should restart within a minute or so. Once its restarted, you should be
able to view all the usual icons on the iPhone, and you wont get that slide to
emergency lock. (I.e - Successfull jailbreak!!)

16) Now go into Installer, then into 1.1.1 Tweaks, then select & install OctoPrep. This
is very important!! Without this, you wont be able to jailbreak 1.1.2 :) Once
done, proceed to the next step. (Btw, this was the hardest part of the procedure,
the rest is a piece of cake really :P)

Step 3 - Update to 1.1.2:

1) Load up iTunes. Make sure your iPhone is docked / connected to your Mac.
2) iTunes should now say that there's an update available for your iPhone (1.1.2),
and you can update. Press the update button! (DONT PRESS THE RESTORE
BUTTON!!)

3) iTunes will now begin to update your iPhone to 1.1.2, this process takes abit of
time as it involves downloading the 1.1.2 ipsw & updating your iPhone.
4) Once this is done, your iPhone will restart. Proceed to the next step.

Step 4 - Jailbreak 1.1.2:

1) Stick the iPhone in the dock. (if it isnt)
2) Make SURE iTunes is closed & not running.
3) Download the 1.1.2 Jailbreak (Click Here (http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html))
4) Go into the 1.1.2 jailbreak folder.
4) Double click on jailbreak.jar

5) A window will popup talking about the 1.1.2 Jailbreak. Tick the Enable SSH box,
and change the SSH password if you want. (Default is alpine)
6) Press the Jailbreak! button.
5) It should start working. Leave it be, there will be a progress bar indicating your
progress. (Wait a while) If you get cannot connect / detect iPhone error, read
the F.A.Q below!!

If it gets stuck whilst at 'reading flash image', make sure auto-lock is set to off /
never. Restart the process again.

6) You should get a message detailing the successfull jailbreak, saying please reboot
your phone now. Reboot the iPhone. (Hold the power button to shut it down,
then press the power button again to start it up again)

7) If everything went well, your iPhone is now activated! Enjoy.

F.A.Q:

Q) When I try to jailbreak 1.1.2, I keep getting an error telling me to connect my iPhone, but my iPhone is connected!
A) You are not using the latest 1.1.2 Jailbreak. Please update!

Q) Can this tutorial work on German iPhones / US iPhones?
A) Yes it does.

Q) What version of iTunes do I need?
A) You need iTunes 7.4 or higher. I personally used 7.5, so advise everyone to do so.

Q) INDependence is asking for MobileDevice / INDependence is saying I dont have the correct version of iTunes.
A) Read the README.txt file that came with INDependence. It'll tell you how to solve this problem.

Q) My iPhone wont work with <insert name> simcard! Whats going on?!
A) If you can read, this guide does not tell you how to UNLOCK your iPhone. It allows you to jailbreak & pass activation. Therefore, a UK iPhone running 1.1.2 will only work on O2 simcards, a DE iPhone running 1.1.2 will only work on T-Mobile, and so on..

Q) How do I follow this guide on Windows?
A) Credits goto cheesypeas for a quick explanation & guide on what to do if you are using Windows. (Click Here (http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showpost.php?p=122235&postcount=109)) Thanks bud!

Q) Will this work on iPhones with bootloader version 4.06_M3S2?
A) This method does not tamper with the bootloader, therefore yes it does work. Remember folks, this guide does not allow you to unlock iPhones!

Q) Visual Voicemail doesnt work, whats going on?
A) Unfortunately, if you are not on a iPhone tariff, then Visual Voicemail will not work, as visual voicemail is 'technically' server-side (your network has to enable this for you, and this is obviously on enabled on iPhone tariffs)

Q) Can I get Visual Voicemail to ring the normal voicemail number?
A) This was suggested by pgilder. Open up your iPhone's number keyboard, and type the following:

*5005*86*xxx# (Make sure to replace xxx with your voicemail number. For O2 customers, its 901)

Once you have done that, tap the Call button. The screen will say 'Please wait' for a few seconds, and then it's done. Now the next time you tap
Voicemail on your iPhone, it'll dial up your Voicemail. (This is usefull for those who dont have visual voicemail working) Credits goto pgilder for this!

Q) Why cant I contact you via email or private message (on the forums) ?
A) I'll provide a (very) crude answer to this. People are not reading the guide, and not using their brains to think properly, thus not 'using' the common sense part of their brain. What happens then? I get emails / useless PMs asking me to pretty much spoon-feed them the information. Granted, some emails/PMs I get are genuinely 'unique' problems (or hard ones), and the person has actually put some thought into it. This is a good 2% of everything I get, thus I've discontinued email & PM-based support. If you are really struggling, I'm a regular in the #iPhone IRC channel. (Server: irc.osx86.hu)

Q) I've just jailbreaked 1.1.2, and I am on an iPhone tariff. Edge & Visual Voicemail dont work. What can I do?
A) Okey firstly, please read the following. This solution will only work for O2 iPhone Tariff Customers!! What you need to do is SSH into the iPhone, and issue the following commands:

rm /var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.carrier.plist

ln -s /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/O2_UK.plist /var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.carrier.plist

rm -f /var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

Credits to rossmck for the solution.

Is it possible to make these introduction for T-Mobile Germany?

This is a good tutorial and should really be renamed to "Tutorial: Jailbreak & Bypass Activation for OOB 1.1.2 iPhones"

Yes, this tutorial will work on German iPhones. I've added this question to the F.A.Q for future reference.

Very nice!
It would be absolutely perfect if there could be an alternative path for us little Windows users. Particularly when it comes to going back up 1.1.2 I don't know what's going on anymore, as I have no Mac experience...

hmmmm i think i messed up somewhere along the line, whenever i try to uppdate to 1.1.2 after in have done the Tweaks 1.1.1 bit I seem to get error 1015 saying it couldn't install.

any help?

Naujoks
11-14-2007, 01:33 AM
It actually already starts when I want to extract the ZIP jailbreak on my Windows machine. I get a message that "a folder with that name already exists" and if I "want to overwrite the files" in there. That just sounds all a bit dodgy to me... I couldn't find any kind of explanation for Jailbreak, so I don't know what its normal behaviour is...

Digbave

Any evidence of this working?

Think i'll just wait for dev teams anysim

Trunkz
11-14-2007, 02:26 AM
@Naujoks: Follow that tutorial exactly, except replace the following Mac applications with their Windows cousins: When you need to use INDependance (Mac), use iBrickr. When you need to use Transmit (Mac), use WinSCP instead. That should help :) (Oh and on the Jailbreak 1.1.2, instead of doing the ./osx step, run the windows.bat file instead)

@Skazza: Did you follow the guide correctly? After you install Octoprep, you just pop your iPhone in your dock, launch up iTunes and press update. You shouldnt get the 1015 error. If you're still getting problems, pop down into IRC. (#iphone on the irc.osx86.hu server)

@Digbave: Yes this has been confirmed by pretty much everyone in the #iphone channel, pop in if you dont believe me :)

I'd kinda ask you guys to ask your questions in IRC, as you're more likely to get a faster response. I dont check the forums every day you know, and nor does everyone else :) However, your questions are most welcome, and they are put in the FAQ (as you can see above, the FAQ section is questions of users that I feel will benefit future users) Hope that helps.

This tutorial worked great until I tried to jailbreak 1.1.2, I ran osx and it seemed to go ok and then gave me a success message. I rebooted the phone and then it rebooted itself only to be back the emergency dial screen.

Any ideas what happened there?

I don't appear to have any SSH access either.

Hi all i have another post that a few people have been discussing all evening about doing this -

Now, I have a problem i have followed all the steps and done as i should all the way upto the 1.1.2 jailbreak it follows the process lots of numbers etc tells me its complete to turn the phone off and it will restart again (of which it does)

Now what? I just get the normal 1.1.2 activation screen (with the slide for emergency) I cannot get into Winscp at all

I've no need to activate hack the phone however there is problems with EDGE / Visual Voicemail.

After jailbreaking and going on 1.1.2 the EDGE menu appears but no settings, the concern there is are the settings specific to the device on o2 iPhone and does it depend on EDGE for the Visual Voicemail?

Any help on the issue of loosing EDGE settings / Visual Voice Mail I'd be happy to hearfrom you.

Incidentally..... I am on an iPhone contract on O2 UK so voice mail (visual) does work in a STOCK 1.1.2 just not when its been jailbroken.

I got it right 3rd time :)

Hello,
what Versions of Software have you guys used to jailbreak the UK 1.1.2 Firmware?

When i flash the 1.1.1 Firmware into my german T-Mobile phone, i dont get this 1015 Error but unkown error 1 instead. Is this maybe the same?

I talked to Trunkz, who made be believe INdependence works with iTunes 7.5, which is not the case.
Is there any 7.5 compatible Version?
Can i use 7.4.2 with my T-Mobile phone?

Any confirmed jailbreaking success with T-Mobile phones at all?

Where's the step that SIM unlocks the iPhone?
Cannot find it in the guide and without any SIM unlock the phone should still be locked on the included SIM card, not?

It is step 7

It is a semi sim unlock in that it allows you to use any o2 sim "pay as you go" or "contract"

Trunkz,

I scoured the net for this. I had almost given up and decided to wait for the proper AnySIM 1.2 release that works with the upgraded baseband firmware.

Then I found your article.

I can 100% confirm that this procedure works. I have unlocked and activated two UK O2 iPhones and am currently using O2 contract sims in them perfectly fine.

Every part of the phone appears completely operational, including EDGE support in selected areas :)

Big kudos.

When you need to use INDependance (Mac), use iBrickr.

is there a version of ibrickr for 1.1.1?? i thought it only worked with 1.0.2? will this definately bring the phone out of restore mode?

I just followed the amazing instructions and can also confirm fully works on my company o2 sim. Can get rid of my Blackberry now! Thanks Trunkz.

Only done a few tests but everything seems to be working YouTube, Edge, Safari etc Only thing that doesn't work is visual voice mail. Do I need to configure this?

Floppy I also didn't have the folder 'opt/local/lib'. I just went into terminal and did the following:

1. mkdir /opt/
2. open opt

This should open a Finder window, just copy the folder into it and all should work.

for anyone who has activated their phone with o2 already but wants to jailbreak it for applications i can confirm this works and you will not need to do step 7! i did it on windows and yeh just use ibrickr and windows.bat!

Edit: also you can use the trial of iPhoneRingToneMaker to add custom ringtones to your 1.1.2 aswell :D

Edit (again): does anyone know how to remove SSH from the icon menu? i just want to hide it so i cant see it.

hey guys...
does it matter which "lockdownd" file you use? i managed to get to the stage where you transfer the lockdownd file in transmit, but when i reboot the phone, i don't get connected to the o2 network. everything else seems to be working, (email, youtube, safari etc) just not the phone. after some research, i'm getting the idea that you should rename the file to sit alongside the original?

any ideas of what i'm doing wrong?

thanks

I'm having the same problem as Polarberry. I've completed all the steps (correctly, I think) but at the end everything works apart from the phone itself, i.e. I don't get a signal from O2, and no O2-UK sign.

The lockdownd patch provided in the instructions wouldn't download from **********, so I found another copy of it and patched it over into the usr>libexec directory into the iphone using WinSCP ( I'm on XP). Is my version of lockdownd out of date?

Any suggestions? I'm so close. All the other steps worked flawlessly using all the Windows equivalent software, and as far as I'm concerned, the iPhone is jailbroken on 1.1.2. (It is 1.1.2 UK iPhone from Apple Regent St).

Loving the WiFi Safari browsing feature btw!

No its a US phone on Vodafone in the UK. It also has worked with SwissCom PAYG SIM when it was on 1.0.2

Glad it works for most people. Some of you guys arent reading the FAQ section, as alot of your questions are answered there! Come on now, also use the IRC channel abit more. I'm in the Apple store atm (Kingston this time, not Regent Street) and I'll be back later on.

I.e: An example question is that when someone types ./osx on the jailbreak thing, it says your iPhone is not connected. This question is answered in the FAQ. You need to download a dylib, again instructions for this is on the FAQ question (page one ;) ) Last mention, is that please if you get the chance thank the people who worked hard on the jailbreak etc.. :P Send em a nice PM or say hii to them on IRC. Thanks :)

OK thanks to all the people who worked hard on the Jailbreak. For 1.0.1, for 1.0.2 and for 1.1.2 Actually you guys are getting so good at this, perhaps Apple will just give up locking phones as there's no point when you free them the next day. :D

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WORKED PERFECTLY!!

I had trouble the first time because I had an old lockdownd file, so in the end I restored my iPhone back to factory state, and started this method all over again.

It didn't take long, and at the end I saw "O2-UK" in the corner! Needless to say I'm proper chuffed!

DEFFO USE THIS IF YOU HAVE AN O2 SIM ALREADY (OR GNA BUY A PAYG O2 SIM) !!!!!!!!

Hey guys, i have a problem with the downgrade part of the tutorial.

After getting the 'The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error
occured (1015)' message during the downgrade to 1.1.1 I fired up Independence v 1.3 to try to get it the phone to reboot, but the status just says "Disconnected: waiting for iphone" and nothing ever happens. I am using iTunes 7.5.

Right, that .ipsw file was extracted. That shouldnt have happened. (Guessing you downloaded this with Safari) I would suggest you re-download this file through Firefox instead. :)

Glad it worked out for you. If you see any of the folks mentioned in the credits, do say hii to them. Afterall, without them, this guide wouldnt mean anything :)

@Everyone: If you are having problems, refer to the FAQ section in the first post. (Its just above the credits section) A few users here have asked questions which have already been asked, and the solutions posted in the FAQ section. Secondly, if you've got a rather odd problem, do note that there is an IRC channel available, for you to come in and pester / ask others :) (Again, listed in the first topic) .. I'm not gonna reference anything from the first topic, in hopes that some of you might actually read / re-read the first post completely, and not just skim past till you get to the 'guide' instruction :D

Hi people!

Thanks to all whom contributed to this great tutorial :)

I still have a question for which I couldn't find any answer yet, probably because it's a bit complicated (and I searched a lot in this forum... ;)).

I will soon receive my US iPhone I ordered last week. Unfortunatly it's been produced in week 45, so it'll surely have the 1.1.2 firmware and the new bootloader.
Ok with this tutorial I'll be able to jailbreak and activate the phone, but the simlock will still remain. Now here's my question: what kind of simlock does the iPhone have (country, network, service provider?) and where does the simlock actually happen (is it in the baseband)?

My point is that I have a german O2 contract. One good thing of it is that I can also use the T-Mobile network for free with my SIM. Now assuming that I would have a DE phone, would I be able to use my SIM, I mean would I get the T-Mobile network? If yes and if the simlock is in the BB, is there a possibility to "change" the BB of my US iPhone to the DE one (doing a restore from the DE 1.1.2)?

Sorry if there are some things I didn't get right, there is so much information in this forum that my head is spinning ;)

Yes, in the baseband.

No, not possible afaik. O2-SIM isn't an included iPhone-T-Mobile SIM, so no chance to get that running.
In addition. Not being able to rewrite the baseband due to the different bootloader means you cannot rewrite the baseband (sic!) like you suggested.

Hmm, I thought that since iPhones with an older bootloader got their BB updated when they update to 1.1.2, it would then be possible to "update" the BB of an US iPhone to the BB of a DE one using a restore.
I just somehow don't find it logical that one can't rewrite the BB with the new bootloader, that would mean that Apple would neither be able to update the BB on the 1.1.2 OOB iPhones. Maybe I'm just confused... ;)

I get to the stage where I'm restoring to 1.1.1 and it comes up with "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1015)" I then launce iNdependence & it just says "disconected waiting for iPhone" at the bottom of the iNdependence window. iTunes gives me an error to do with being in restore mode? and if I try & use the iPhone all I get is the "dock me" screen.

am I doing something wrong?

I seem to be stuck at the first step. I'm having problems with the firmware, I've found iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw.zip and modified it to the correct extension. But when I click on restore it just takes me into the folder with some .dmg files and another folder marked as firmware and some other folders. not sure if I've named it wrongly or if its the wrong file or if it's just me. Anyone got a link to the firmware file?

You have to change the folder options to allow file extensions to be modified, all you are doing is renaming it without changing the extension.

Although I've successfully unlocked my iPhone using the o2 unlock on this thread (once again thanks trunkz et al), Ii'm a bit confused about this whole bootloader business.

I'm aware the the UK iPhones ship with different bootloaders, and hence certain UK unlocking companies are struggling to find a backdoor into this version and therefore can't fully unlock the phone for use on other networks. This brings me to my question. By using the unlock posted by trunkz, how have we actually unlocked our iphones? By downgrading and then upgrading again etc did we do something to the bootloaders, or is it simply because we patched our lockdownd file which meant any o2 sim could be used rather than a specific tariff sim instead?

You mean by highlighting the doc and then clicking Apple & I to change name and extension? I did that too but no joy, if there is another way please let me know.

When I download the doc in Safari is it automatically unzipping the file, could this be the problem?

You havent unlocked your phone. You have unlocked it to work with any O2 sim though. So if you're on O2 your in luck!

Otherwise for an anysim update you're just gonna have to wait!

Ok, managed to restore to 1.1.1 and got the error message. Downloaded independence, 1.2.5 won't work with itunes 7.5 so I used 1.3 with the workaround which worked but it's not kicking the iPhone out of restore mode when I open it up. I just get Status: Disconnected: Waiting for iPhone on the Independence activation page.

Anyone got any ideas why this is happening?

Hey there im now to this forum, just got a few questions regarding how to unlock my iphone,

Where do i Download the 1.1.1 ipsw. Make sure it ends in _Restore.ipsw from?

"Now go into Installer, then into 1.1.1 Tweaks, then select & install OctoPrep. This
is very important!! Without this, you wont be able to jailbreak 1.1.2 Once
done, proceed to the next step. (Btw, this was the hardest part of the procedure,
the rest is a piece of cake really :P)"

Where is Installer? is that on the iphone? and where is OctoPrep?

"Download Transmit (or another SFTP client)."
What is Transmit? Iv never heard of this

"Server: <-- Your iPhone IP Address."
How do i find out my iphones IP address?

Sorry for all the questions i just want to know what im doing before i start playing with my iphone lol

o2contract SIM won't work after doing everything in the tutorial correctly (except the ./osx part in terminal, i didn't have to do that since it would give me the same error as above, i just double clicked on the jar file and it jailbroke just fine).

Still not sure why. If I put in for example an Orange SIM it says incorrect SIM, but for the o2 sim cards it just says No Service or shows no bars...

Even though putting the O2 sim card in another phone shows all 5 bars.

you sure you replaced the lockdownd with the right file? this has to be the correct one, not just any old lockdownd will do

right so how much do you have to change for this to work on windows xp??

Saltank
11-17-2007, 09:40 PM
pgilder: That worked fantastically, thank you for the link!

I think it had something to do with permissions. The file you linked had 644, while others reccommended 555 or 755.

I think if one had to do with via XP, they may run in to Error 1604 whereby iTunes fails to downgrade to 1.1.1 and stays on 1.1.2; I encountered this a few times and just did it in OSX to fully restore to default 1.1.2 and downgrade/upgrade.

to knock the phone out of DFI mode: iDemocracy would be replaced by iBrickr, that worked for me when I was testing it on XP.

From then on it's simple, just follow the same guide to jailbreak over wifi, install oktoprep and the tools neded for SSH before updating back to 1.1.2

Afterwards get the 1.1.2 jailbreak from the dev team (the jar and the windows.bat one); making sure you have JAVA installed; it should jailbreak the updated-back-to 1.1.2 so that there's no more activation; from then on you copy the new lockdownd files using putty, or try the new independence (since it allows you to copy files without typing in all the commands)...

hello everyone,

got my phone up and running, thanxx a million for this great tutorial.

one thing, i had problems @ the downgrade process coz i had a "selfmade" pin on my sim.

so, if you plan to jailbreak a uk / german phone, remove the sim-pin before (!!) you downgrade coz you cant type the pin after downgrading to 1.1.1 and the phone want let you in !!!

doing this, everything runs like hell :-)

Some details for windows users...

Step 1) part 2) - getting phone into restore mode

iphone on and in dock, itunes running
press and hold power off and home button
ignore slide to power off
white apple appears
let go power button , keep home button down
when connector picture appears let go home button

Step 1) part3) can't remember what the dialog said, think I pressed restore but it disappeared and I was left with the main itunes restore screen. On the itunes restore screen I click the restore button whilst pressing the shift key to get the choose restore file dialog.

Step 1) part 6) I used iBricker.exe to get me out of restore mode. ( yes the website does have a warning about "1.1.1 ruins everything" however the get out of restore feature works and that's all I used it for)

Step 2) part 2) "dial *#307#" could be written as "type *#307# and press call"

Step 2) part 4) "Press accept call, then press hold, then press deny." could be written as "press answer , then hold, then decline"

Step 4) part 4) "load up terminal" = "open windows command prompt"
Step 4) part 4) "type ./osx" = "run windows.bat file which you find in that directory"

Step 7 parts 1) and 2) I used WinSCP
note : the ip address can be found under iphone settings -> wifi -> and click the little blue arrow next to your active network connection.

Step 7 part 6) I used WinSCP to check the permissions on the existing lockdownd file ( select it, right click then properties ), I then renamed the old file, copied the new one to the phone ( drag and drop ) then set the permissions the same as the old one.

make sure that itunes and itunes helper are not running
look in activity monitor and quit > force quit them

unplug iphone, wait, and then plug it back in
iNdependence should then recognise it.

Just a quickie to say thanks to everyone involved with this. Bought a UK iphone yesterday (Saturday) unaware of the new firmware so was a bit p@**ed off when I got back from CPW. However worked my way through this guide up to step 16 (I don't have an O2 sim so haven't gone further) and I now have a very expensive ipod touch;) .

Have to say though there is more than enough features to keep me amused until you guys break the sim codey thing. Or maybe I'll get a temp O2 PAYG card:D .

Thanks again - top work!:)

Just a few things first (apologies in advance if they've already been covered).

1. I have a UK iPhone purchased on launch day. This is already activated with o2 so is working fine. All I want to be able to achieve is to use my company contract o2 sim in it during the week and swap back to the legit o2 iPhone sim at the weekends. Do I need to go through all the steps in the guide to achieve this, or is some of it not required in my case seeing as my phone is technically already activated?

2. Once complete can I change between the standard o2 and iphone sims just by simply swapping them over?

Thanks in advance,

Andy.

youll need to follow the whole thing

heres why:
when the iphone activates, it 'registers' that sim to that phone, so only that sim card will work in an iphone
in order to use other sim cards, you need to replace the lockdownd which leaves it in a 'factory activated' state - so any o2 sim will work

in order to replace that lockdownd, you need full system access, which can only be achieved by jailbreaking, which in turn, can only be achieved by downgrading then upgrading as said in the guide

understand? (its not really that important...)

and yes, youll be able to simply swap sim cards over
please be aware that you may need to reboot iphone for the swapped sim to work, and that the sim holder mechanism may not withstand being opened twice a week...

make sure that itunes and itunes helper are not running
look in activity monitor and quit > force quit them

unplug iphone, wait, and then plug it back in
iNdependence should then recognise it.

I'd already tried that too but still getting same outcome. I have a feeling it's something to do with opt file as this was the only bit I wasn't that clear on. I think I followed the steps to create the opt file in terminal correctly but I'm not certain it's right.

Thanks for the help though! :)

I just tried your steps again a couple of times, now I'm getting this error message - Connection failed: Pairing is not valid. Make sure you run iTunes with your phone connected at least once.

Ok I kept trying and it finally recognised it, success finally!!

Yes it will.

I'd suggest reading all the steps and the posts in this thread first because any of the problems you come across will probably already have been covered, then your prepared if they arise.

How do i find out my iphones IP address?

Sorry for all the questions i just want to know what im doing before i start playing with my iphone lol

I've successfully jailbroken my iPhone with this guide now, but now iTunes seems to be having a bit of an issue - iTunes could not connect to iphone, unknown error occurred (0xE8000001)

I have connected to iTunes with no problem since I jailbroke my iPhone so I'm not sure why this is happening.

Any ideas anyone?

Just one question which may be obvious. I cannot get iTunes to see the phone. There is also no charging indication it either... Is this becuaseof the Jailbreak or a "feature".

once you jailbreak the phone on jailbreakme.com, there should be an 'installer' icon on the 'desktop' of the iphone

OktoPrep is in the tweaks (1.1.1) category...

once you need the ip address, you should be able to get to the 'connect to itunes' image, and 'slide for emergency'
slide for emergency, and key in *♯307♯ then press dial
delete the numbers key in '1' then dial
answer, hold, decline the call
at the bottom, press contacts, then create a new one
in the url field, add 'pref://1f'
save contact, click on the url
this will open the settings
go to wifi, and then click on the connected network
scroll down, and itll give you the IP address

Just want to confirm that this method does indeed work fine with my UK/Euro 1.1.2 OTB iPhone. I waited a few days before deciding to jump in just to be sure - and although I was a little 'stressed out' not being sure if it would actually work.. 30 minutes of taking it slowly got it working fine on my via my Windows system.

Just make sure any windows users download "iBrick" .. this *will* see your iPhone and bring it back to life when it appears (purposely) to be dead. Be prepared for the iPhone "plug-in" screen to turn red (good sign!) and it will then reboot to your new firmware; thats the hard part really.. or the worrying bit (but it will go fine!) ..

What else, .. other than that it really is not that hard at all to pull off.. the difficult bit for me was getting the bloody sim out the iPhone and putting my newly purchased O2 PAYG in (after backing up and replacing the lockdown file) .. I then wondered if it had all been for nothing, turned the phone completely off.. back on again and boom .. it searched and found O2 and works beautifully from the few calls I have made.

I was a little cheesed off before starting as I asked a question in an IRC channel and some buy told me that it this method would definitely not work as he had tried it.. bollocks to him! - The hard part was entering the digits in correctly on the keypad (for me!) well .. remembering the sequence -)

Anyone who's thinking of attempting it - just do it! Don't spend a week fannying around worrying; Windows users that is!

Hi,

Which firmware version is this 04.02. 13_G purchased from apple london? Is it 1.1.2? If so, I'd like to wait for the proper unlock to it instead of downgrading to 1.1.1.
I was wondering if i can activate it for the time being or is there some sort of specific activation procedure before proceeding to unlock?

Thanks a lot.

Just an update on the iTunes not seeing the phone issue...

Solved it by using a different lockdown file... Doh! I missed the link in the original instructions and found a different version. Definitely a case of RTFM first.

Also important to change the file permissions with WinSCP.

All hunky dorey now and very pleased with the result.

Ok I will try to clarify the steps I took and how they differ slightly from the steps on page 1 of this thread. Here goes:

5) You will then get an error: 'The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error
occured (1015)' DONT PANIC! This is good lol! It means you've successfully
restored to 1.1.1, proceed to step 6.

Ok, when I did this step the error message popped up but when I dismissed it the iphone showed the connector lead and the itunes icon, hinting that it had lost connection to iTunes. What you need to do here is open activity monitor in system prefs, unplug the iphone, kill ituneshelper application and then plug the phone back in. I didn't need to kill iTunes or even close it for that matter.

It seems you need to download the iNdependence beta 1.3b as this is the only package that seems to have the mod dev tool included. If you are using iTunes 7.5 (which I did) you WILL need to follow this step in the FAQS:

Q) INDependence is asking for MobileDevice / INDependence is saying I dont have the correct version of iTunes.
A) Okey, simple solution for this. Down the MobileDevice file (Click Here), unzip this in your INDependence folder. Now run the independence mob dev tool, to tell it where the mobiledevice folder is, and also tell it where the independence app is. (Look carefully on the mob dev app 'window' if you dont understand)

I'm fairly certain that if you have the same problem as me above you shouldn't need independence to kick the iphone out of this mode, killing ituneshelper and replugging the phone worked nicely.

Finally, instead of following all individual instructions in step 4 all you should need to do is download the latest jailbreak 1.1.2 here http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html unzip and run the .jar file. This did everything for me - jailbroke 1.1.2 and activated my phone. I didn't need to do the whole lockdownd business - it just worked fine after this step. Everything seems to work on the phone with an O2 simplicity sim card with no problems. I haven't tried visual voicemail yet but I doubt that'll work as it is related to your contract service supplied by O2.

Basically you can't go wrong if you follow the steps to this tutorial in tandem with the steps in the jailbreak 1.1.2 readme in the package that I linked above.

Cheers and good luck to all!

P.S. I was using OSX tiger on a macBook pro, with iTunes 7.5 (just to be sure I uninstalled my SRS iWOW plugin from iTunes just in case it didn't play nice)

You dont have your iPhone under restore mode. Follow the instructions on the guide to do so. You know your under restore mode, when the iPhone displays an iTunes logo + dock lead / cable. :)

Secondly, I'll be updating the guide tonight, to reflect the changes from the new jailbreak 1.1.2 :) Will keep you guys updated on this matter.

You need to Press the sleep (power) button and then the Home button simultaneously and hold them and then release the Sleep button until it goes in to DFU mode (wire with iTunes logo) and iTunes should recognise the restore mode.

I had a crisis today...

my iPhone would not connect to any Mac/PC. nothing, as if it's totally busted! it would not charge and only DFU mode would be recognised. I could only charge it via the wall socket.

I couldn't figure out what to do and i decided to delete a 'lockdown' folder on the iPhone file system. That removed the jailbreak and i couldn't do anything, had to start fresh.

Update!

The guide has been updated to accommodate the new 1.1.2 jailbreak. Minor changes have been incorporated into the guide, to distinguish between O2 UK & T-Mobile Germany users. (So that people in the UK dont think that you can just pop in a T-Mobile UK simcard, and it'd work )

Secondly, it has been proof-read, and any conflicting statements should have been amended, if not please send me an email, and I'll gladly rectify this. Finally, the credits list has been amended, so maybe you made it to my halls of fame! Thanks alot folks for all the thanks I've gotten, make sure to thank the devs as well.

A new updated version of the 1.1.2 JB was released a few days ago. This guide was updated in order to rectify the changes. edge worked for me, no extra input required
since then, i disabled it (using services.app from installer.app) as i have to pay high data rates. ive tried re-enabling it, but no success

visual voicemail wont work
it requires you to be on a o2 iphone contract with working edge

however, you can type "*5005*86*xxx#" (where xxx is the voicemail number. for o2, this is 901, so it would be *5005*86*901#) into the keypad on the phone, which will make the phone ring o2 voicemail when that button is pressed, so its like pressing and holding 1 on most other phones...

sounds odd
try it all over again, in itunes, do a restore to 1.1.2
sounds like the jailbreak didnt work correctly

Thanks for the reply.
I did try it a couple of times with identical results. I'll try again this evening though.

Id found it really odd that it jailbroke the phone fine, but there is not installer icon. I'd have expected all or nothing.

Great process once you have assembled all the files needed.

My iPhone is working great apart from YouTube. Anyone know a fix for this please.

Best wishes

if you used the 1.1.2 java jailbreak app, it save a youtube.zip file on your phone, so when u ssh into u can copy the zip file to your machine and extract, and copy the contents to the right folder.. all is done

Hi,

Been tearing my hair out trying to work out why i cant get my uk iphone jailbroken.

Done all steps up to 1.1.2 jailbreak. On windows Vista I open windows.bat

It opens the jailbreak program, i install ssh (ticked) and click jailbreak. Command prompt window opens with following:

at jailbreak.prepareIphuc
at Jailbreak$task.run
at java.lang.thread.run (unknown source)

Then it just hangs - iphone doesn't do anything, and that command window stays open.

btw itunes is closed and not running.

HELP!?

Hi

I have fallen at the first hurdle!:(

I have downloaded all the software necessary and done step 2 OK. When I start up iTunes (step 3) it doesn't offer me the option of restore or update. All I get is how to activate and sign up for the O2 contract!

I am obviously doing something wrong, can anyone offer any help.

Best wishes

Hi guys, Can anyone help me with the same dumb question - my UK iphone is unmessed with, and when i connect it to itunes, theres only the possibility to activate via O2... The "RESTORE" button is nowhere to be seen, should it be like that? Does the restore button appear after I "power-home button"it to Restore mode and connect it to iTunes or what???

Please help even if it seems to be a stupid question,

Let me summarize:

I buy an UK or US iPhone with 1.1.2 on it. I activate and jailbreak it with the software of the dev team and I can use any of following SIM cards?

- O2 UK
- Orange FRANCE
- T-Mobile DE
- Tim ITALY
- AT&T US

Is it correct??

No it is not correct, If you have a UK iphone with OOB 4,6 You can only bypass the activation and then jailbrake it to use it as an iphone, or if You wish, you can mod it a bit further and use any O2(only) sim card - contract or PAYG. So whereever You got the phone from, if you have the 4.6 OOB, there is no way yet to use other sim's other then the country's contract operator you've bought the phone(in uk O2, germany T-mobile, etc). But hopefully, and I REALLY DO HOPE, dev team will hack the 4,6 also. =)

Well if anyone finds my reply incorrect, i have seriously missed the last 24 hours of reading data about it;).

JK

you should have read the rest of this thread. the solution is in there

open terminal, and type "mkdir /opt/" then "open /opt" without the quotes
then copy the folder inside the opt folder you downloaded into the newly created folder, all should then work

yes, enter DFU by holding home and power as the phone turns on...
then follow the instructions. again, this is listed on other replies in this thread

AGAIN, this is listed in this thread, and on many other topics on this forum
currenty, UK and German iphones can ONLY WORK on O2 and T-mobile respectively
IT EVEN SAYS THIS AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS GUIDE
in a few weeks, there should be an unlock, but there is no guarantee of this.

PLEASE WILL PEOPLE READ THE ENTIRE THREAD BEFORE POSTING QUESTIONS

Jalakask, I found out by trial and error you need to have the iPhone in the dock and connected to the computer, then press the power and home keys as described in the instructions. Now the iPhone will be recognised as being in recovery mode and you can start the process. Hope this helps.

Zeem, Thanks for the reply. Please can you be more explicit what I have to do re the YouTube. You say...

"so when u ssh into u can copy the zip file to your machine and extract, and copy the contents to the right folder.. all is done"

Sorry I must be dense as I have some questions...
1) What app am I using to ssh the iPhone?
2) Which zip file are you describing?
3) How am I expanding the zip file?
4) which is the "right folder"?

I am using a mac BTW

Many thanks

READ THE THREAD. THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESRTION IS ON THE FIRST PAGE, THE PREVIOUS PAGE, AND MANY BEFORE THAT
the iPhone bought in UK or Germany CANNOT CURRENTLY BE UNLOCKED so only an o2 sim will work in the UK, or a T-Mobile sim for germany
A TMOBILE SIM CARD WILL NOT WORK IN A UK IPHONE

to use SSH, download a trial of 'transmit'
in the server box, type in the IP address of the iphone (more on this in a sec)
in the user name box, type "root" without quotes
in the password box, type in the password you chose, or "apline" if you didnt choose one
to find the iphones ip address, go to settings > wifi > click on the connected wifi network
and the ip should be listed there, something like 192.168.1.6

and i dont know about the zip file, or correct folder, sorry

see, i am still happy to help people with GENUINE problems that HAVE NOT already been asked :)

OK I posted earlier after downgrading my OOB UK 1.1.2 iPhone to 1.1.1 and jailbreaking succesfully. Well I've now done the rest.

Following this guide to the letter and using iTunes 7.4.2 (4) on MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.10 it went smoothly updating via iTunes back up to 1.1.2. Then used the jailbreak (had to download the libreadline.5.2.dylib as outlined in the FAQ) and hey presto.

Then installed my free O2 PAYG sim newly aqcuired this morning and I'm now happily texting, calling and voicemailing (they even added a £1 bonus onto my account:) .

Only problem I'm having is I can't seem to install any new apps through the installer. I get all the way to the install or cancel button but the install button is greyed out and unresponsive, the cancel button works fine. Can't uninstall either - anyone any clues. I can upload via SFTP no problem. Also can't delete contacts from address book but can add them! Again syncing them ain't a problem.

Overall though well chuffed. Donation to DEV team on it's way!:D

does this mean that those of us who have already (and successfully) done this need to redo it?

and thanks for crediting me, only did it so more people can successfully follow this guide and use the amazing iphone without the amazingly ridiculous price, so all credit should be for you, and those that have helped make this hack possible.
Heh thanks. To answer your question, those who used the old 1.1.2 JB need not re-do this. Its essentially the same 1.1.2 JB, however it will automatically 'activate' it for (i.e. skip lockdownd step on the guide, hence its removal) and also fix youtube. Thats about it :)

damnit, i just brought an iPhone for nothing..
Wait for an unlock solution to become available. This was essentially your fault. As pgilder has already pointed out, if you had only read the guide properly, you would have known that the UK iPhones will only work on O2 UK simcards, and the german iPhones will only work on T-Mobile GERMANY simcards. Ignorance is not an excuse :)

TAKE NOTE:

YouTube seems to be working for some but not for others. (Me included) I'm currently trying to get hold of the correct solution, and then I will post how to fix this in the F.A.Q section. I repeat, the F.A.Q. section!!

Trunkz, is this of any help:
http://www.ging.co.nz/youtube.php
the youtube thing is quite a common issue...

oh and Trunkz, how about adding this fix for visual voicemail to the FAQ, to make the voicemail button ring the voicemail phone number:
type "*5005*86*xxx#" (where xxx is the voicemail number. for o2, this is 901, so it would be *5005*86*901#) into the keypad on the phone, which will make the phone ring o2 voicemail when that button is pressed, so its like pressing and holding 1 on most other phones...

damnit, i just brought an iPhone for nothing..
depends on how you look at it
you can activate and jailbreak it, and have an enhanced ipod touch
and, if you wait a few weeks, youll have a new phone as well
i think its lucky you bought it now, as it will be unlocked eventually. rather than waiting for the next software upgrade and for this whole process to start over again...

mhh... don't get it, did a restore to 1.1.1 in itunes, then went ahead to do the jailbreak, tapped "install appsnap" safari closed by itself and the phone shwitched off. when turning it back on from the power button nothing was different - still "slide to emergency". so tried to do the jailbreak again, pressed again install appsnap and still got the same result - "slide to emergency"!!

What went wrong??? Do i now have to start from step 1 again(restore to 1.1.1, even though it should be on 1.1.1 now)???? Help please!

Just in case anyone else has the same problem I had where jailbreakme was jailbreaking the phone but not putting the installer icon on the springboard I thought I'd mention that it seems to be sorted now.

I wish I could tell you that I came up with a clever solution, or that I understand what was going on, but basically I just had to repeat the whole process five or six times and eventually it worked.

Also, it's worth noting again (even though it's been mentioned already in this thread) that once you have run jailbreakme once it fixes the TIFF exploit, so it won't run again until you do a full restore to 1.1.2 then drop back to a fresh install of 1.1.1.

I now have a working phone on a pay as you go sim.
Now to figure out how to turn on gprs on the account. :)
