UK iPhone Unlock possible? [Archive]

Apologies if I'm hitting n00b territory here, but can anyone please let me know or point me to a page/thread detailing what's possible unlock-wise with the UK iPhone? i.e. is it possible to downgrade the FW as with the US handset or is it better to sit tight and wait for a better alternative. I'm just about to head out and pick one up and I can't see much mention on here of what the procedure is for UK phones.

Currently,

You will be able to downgrade the UK iPhone to work as an iPOD Touch, that is all at the moment.

The baseband cannot be downgraded as the bootloader on the UK and German iPhones is new and none of the existing tools will work with it.

Hello, first post on these forums :)

I have a UK iPhone too that I bought yesterday and I am currently waiting for a confirmed solid way of activating and unlocking it.

Any idea when this should come? I have been reading a lot about jailbreaking and trying to pick up all the terms and everything so I am still new.

I have a iPhone next to me that is Out of the box brand new that I got from the carphoneware house yesterday. Still says to activate it when i turn it on :l

There's no need as there's no difference. The guide in the link I posted up there, coupled with the right 1.1.1 FW is spot on.

I hope you dont mind me asking questions on how to do it but I just want to be sure I am doing it right since this the the first time I have even looked at hacking iphones.

Ok so from what i have read this is what i understand I have to do:
1. Plug in iphone to mac, get it into recovery mode and download the 1.1.1 fw
2. restore the iphone to the 1.1.1 fw
3. go to jailbreakme.com and install the jailbreaker

Now i'm lost :P

I'm assuming you're okay with steps 1 and 2, as they're pretty straightforward.

After that you'll have FW 1.1.1 but you'll be stuck with a screen with nothing on it apart from the 'connect to iTunes' icon, at which point you'll need to get and boot up iNdependence 1.2.5 - don't need to do anything with it, but this will restore your screen to one with an Earth pic plus the 'slide for emergency' or whatever.

Now you just need to follow the steps about dialing *#307#, etc. in order to access your contacts and subsequently add the URLs 'prefs' and jailbreakme.com. Save those, click your prefs URL link, set up your wi-fi, disable auto-lock, click your jailbreakme URL link (which takes you to the site in Safari) and then click the link to install AppSnapp. Bingo!

Sorry for the late reply, didn't realize the thread went to page two.

Im still a bit worried so I may ask a lot of questions (reminds me of when I first downgraded my PSP :D )

Could you run me through how to get and boot iNdependence?

I am about to downgrade to 1.1.1 using the file from : http://iphone.unlock.no/#recovery-restore-mode

And for the 1.1.1 file, do I have to unzip it or just get rid of the .zip ending by renaming it?

The 1.1.1 downgrade you mention is a good guide and, yes, use the file linked from there - Save As so Safari doesn't automatically extract the archive and then remove the '.zip' suffix so that the file becomes a '.ipsw' file.

Compared to the early PSP hacks, this is a breeze :)

Crap, phone wont turn on.

I downloaded 1.1.1 and it unzipped itself so i zippied it back up, renamed it and changed it to the ipsw name.

Plugged in iphone and donw the restore, chose the 1.1.1 ipsw and it said unknown error occured (1) and now my phone wont turn on :(

OMG ok, >.< I plugged it back into pc and it turned on, itunes says it is still in recovery mode. Ill try and re-download.

I was panicking like mad for a few minutes there.

Edit: One more thing, iNdependence says I have the wrong version of iTunes? I have 7.5 >.< Ill go find 7.4

Oh the beta, ok sorry, I am using the other one that I was advised to.

Would it be ok to use the beta to kick the phone out the screen it gets stuck in?

I downloaded the link in the file. Opened the program and went to choose the framework but there is nothing it will accept in the folder i downloaded :l

Hmm, its been not doing anything for a while now, i went back to jailbreak me and re clicked it but still same thing. Ill leave it for 5-10 more mins. The screen has turned off by the way but it hasn't restarted.

Should I turn it off and restore again to 1.1.1 then use the iNdependence beta to kick it back to normal then go to jailbreak me again and try?

Its just sitting there with the screen off...

Well i tried 9 times with jailbreakme.com and installed 1.1.1 3 times, once with 1.1.1 from a different site. Still nothing.

I have no updated back to 1.1.2 but is there supposed to be the carriers option in the settings of 1.1.2? Im pretty sure it wasnt there when I last looked.

Also, any ideas why it wasn't jailbreaking?

There is a lot of talk about iNdepence, but in the step by step instructions on the other sites this doesn't get mentioned at all. So what does it actually do, and does one really need it?
Also, what do we poor little Win XP people do?

Once you have visited the TIFF and are sent back to the activation screen, is the internet still being used?

How I downgraded a UK iPhone

1. Follow instuctions from here (I did it with with iTunes 7.5) but substitute 1.02 with the 1.1.1 firmware. Search the interweb for this file

2. Panic because you cannot get out of restore mode

3. Go to http://cre.ations.net/creation/ibrickr and download ibrickr. don't worry about it saying only for 1.0.2 as all we need is to get it out of recovery mode. Start it up and follow instuctions to reset out of recovery mode

4. Follow the instuctions here to get into the iPhone

5. NOTE ***WARNING*** anySim does not work yet...

You cannot sim unlock yet so please wait for this final part.....
