Anyone here actually got a working UK iPhone with an O2 contract? If so I'd be really interested to know if they have fixed the SMS from alphanumeric senders problem.
TO test, go to this site: http://www.sms2email.com on the right hand side, enter your number under where it says "ULTRA fast SMS delivery. Send a test SMS to..." then click "Send", you'll have to enter a confirmation text string then the message will be on its way to you. It will be from "sms2email" as a text string, not a number.
Here is what happened for me under various firmwares:
1.0.2: Message never arrived, suspect it was blocked at the baseband level.
1.1.1: Message arrives, notification appears on home screen but when SMS app is opened message contents do not display, once the SMS app is closed message disappears forever.
1.1.2: ?????? Please fill this in!
Cheers!

I don't have a UK iPhone, mine was a US import, originally 1.0.2 then upgraded to 1.1.1.

I got a O2 connected iPhone OTB
I can confirm that alphanumeric sender IDs work properly.

I've got a 1.0.2 restored to 1.1.1 with AnySIM1.1 on T-Mobile uk, I get updates from T-Mobile from an alphanumeric sender about my remaining balance fine.

Strange. I have the same as you on my US phone and messages with the name 'FirstDirect' fail to come through.

I spent a while debugging a voicemail notification issue - which uses SMSs of the form @_ and @^. The strange thing about it was my friend's phone which was identical to mine worked fine. It ended being my SIM card. I had my carrier swap in a new SIM for me and everything worked.
My issue might have been more simple than the SMSs that you aren't getting but they seem a bit similar. If it's a SIM issue that would explain why the iPhone is always sold with a new SIM and why people who buy and activate with iPhone carriers don't see this and why some say theirs works and others don't. My advice is to experiment with SIMs or try a new SIM from your carrier.

I've come to believe it was actually because of the types of SMS message being sent
- A flash SMS of which the phone can only store 1 are commonly used for things like voicemail notifications, bank messages etc, and the iPhone doesn't handle properly
- as opposed to a normal SMS
It is interesting that you get different results for different SIM cards though, but I thought that the alpha senders issue was actually already fixed in 1.1.1 for ordinary SMS messages. Flash ones still don't get through, I'd be very interested to know if they do in fact work properly under 1.1.2. So maybe it's a bit hard to test on this issue which may actually be two interconnected issues.

Sounds abit odd. The voicemail one could be attributed to network software. For example Vodafone have two types of VM. One sends a normal text and the other sends voicemail message icon (the red dot on the VM icon).
Where as the FirstDirect alpha issue is the same on any of the sims in 1.1.1 i have tried. 2 x Voda and 1 x T-Mo

Has anyone actually tried this on 1.1.2 with the sms2email site I suggested above? The reason I say to use this site is because I know some alphanumeric SMSs work, I too get T-Mobile alerts, but this one doesn't work on 1.1.1, but should, try it on any other phone if you don't believe me.
